I've never cut myself worse with my straight than I ever did with a cartridge razor.
If you currently use cartridge/electric shaver you could also try switching to a Double Edge razor. Cheaper in general and easy to learn. Gives me great results.
I also get to try out all these soaps with great scents like sandalwood or lime.

i shave with just water and a cartridge razor every morning and have a relatively short chinstrap neckbeard type thing. sometimes i let it get longer tho when i want to feel manlier.
