I think there were 68 entrants, it was in NCAA March Madness style brackets. Pretty interesting to watch and be a part of. Final Four Ghandi? What was your slam poetry? Don't tease us. QUESTION: How does your school have 68 people willing to complete in a poetry slam bracket? Did they let 32 of you enter twice? Or did people have byes? First round was mandatory for all people in honors English. Marmy isn't honors English so he wasn't in it.

But why is it mandatory? Forcing your students to recite in a school-wide poetry contest? Makes no sense at all.

I'm guessing the teacher(s) figured out 4 people would show up otherwise Plus it's not a bad thing to have students try something they wouldn't volunteer for.

My class committed to our school's first ever Senior Skip Day.
The next day they sat us down, yelled at us for 2 hours, and then made us do an afternoon of yard work around campus.
Schools are fucking stupid.
edit - this is mostly unrelated, but I felt like complaining about it because it's hilarious looking back

The poetry slam is mandatory but almost everyone wants to compete because the prize for the winner is that you get an automatic A on the final.
So yeah people are excited about it. It gets pretty competitive. A lot of buzz goes around the school every year when it comes around.

while to be fair your class should have probably checked with the adminsitration to see if they were okay with it. I mean schools aren't required to give you a skip day

I don't necessarily disagree, but the administration also required us to check with them if we wanted to do a senior prank.
Again, not unreasonable, but fuck them.

I will say that I think it's a little much that thtey yelled at you for two hours and made you do yard work. at my high school I think they just gave likea 1 hr detention after school. as for pranks it's hard for the school since they don't want you doing anything illegal or doing anything that's going to get them sued. Believe it or not people actually have been arrested for senior pranks. I get your frustration though
I should note that both my parents careers are in high school education and administration.

Dang, Ghandi`s highschool seems like the most hipster thing ever. 68 people in a poetry slam contest... I think my school would be lucky to have 6, and auto A on the final for first place? If you win the provincial speech contest here you got 2% added on to your final grade, which is pretty neat, but definitely no auto A on a final.
That being said Poetry was my least favorite part of English, so I wouldn't be one of the participants.
