I think it's likely, assuming that global warming or some other crisis doesn't completely bone us.
Honestly though it's very hard to predict where society will be in 25 years. If we're lucky we could have thinking machines!
will the interwebs even be the interwebs? or is there gunna be something even more epic? and the interwebs as we know it will be a relic of the past, and only "old" people go there?
maybe VR MMO's are gunna be the next hip things, but by then we'll be too old, and we'll complain about how our cat girl waifu's used to be only 2d, and that kids these days are spoiled with having 3d cat waifu's?
I don't know, I think there's a reason VR hasn't taken hold yet despite it being around for years already, and I don't think the reason is technology related.

So, I met a shining Geodude today, but could not catch it because it was in a horde (can't just throw pokeball) and I had no single target moves (I was EV training). There was basically nothing I could have done... instead I watched hopelessly as the shiny slipped through my grasp.
So pissed right now. This is the third time I've seen a natural shiny... I never mamaged to catch any of them.
There's a level of realism/immersion people either are not ready for or can't handle. I've read about this somewhere, it's similar to the uncanny Valley.
Which is again a technology issue - VR is still obviously "virtual" and not "real," therefore turning a lot of people off the idea. If a truly virtual experience that is indistinguishable from reality can be achieved, a lot of these hang-ups would disappear. It's very much a tech issue still.
I'd be somewhat frightened by a proper VR. We're already hitting issues of people more willing to live in a virtual world then the real one. In a way I can't blame them, the world itself is not a pleasant place and when given the option of a mundane meaningless life vs being a hero in a virtual world with people who think the same, it's hard to fault them.
I'm genuinely curious to see what the governments will do when we hit this level of immersion. In theory it's great for staying in power, let the young folks play games they either won't vote or will only care about whoever lets them continue playing in a VR reality without problems. Ah the future is both interesting and frightening to think about.

You are not a hero in mmos your just a player. In skyrim your a hero and people stop playing that quickly. Also while I don't care much for politics I vote anyway.

Read your typical WoW quest. "Oh it's you! That badass adventurer! Hey can you help me?" You play the hero. Rather you act like it or not is up to you.
