I'm not entirely sure if there has been a revolution in the gaming industry.
Initially I wanted to say the Nintendo Entertainment System which followed after the video game crash, but I don't really know if that was revolutionary. I'd say that was more of a refinement, or an introduction of a new genre.
I'd say more about that topic, but I don't know too much about the early days of video games so I'm going to stop myself before I make a bold claim which simply isn't true.

Star Trek (2009) is one of my favorite movies.
+ Show Spoiler +You know, while we're discussing subjective things. That being said, I really want to play the Metagame with Cheep and Numy now.

The Metagame looks amazing. I really want to play that.
Also, on the subject of revolutions...

Wait, you're arguing that George Lucas REVOLUTIONIZED cinema with Star Wars, but you are at the same time wanting to argue that there has not been a revolution in the gaming industry ever?
This is why I said earlier: this can't be a discussion(if you hold a view like this).

Who said he revolutionized cinema with Star Wars? I've been talking about ILM not Star Wars. Did Frudgey mention Star Wars?

I don't know enough about the subject.
If I said before that I think that George Lucas revolutionized cinema, then I apologize.

Ok, put ILM in place of Star Wars, the point is still ridiculous if it is indeed your stance. Frudgey has clarified that he doesn't ILM to have been revolutionary to movies either though(which I would also dispute), but it is a far more coherent stance.

Yep. So it has the potential to be genuinely interesting. I've heard a couple of my favorite podcasters play it and it's always interesting/humorous when you have to defend something dumb.

War3-->dota-->every moba //I see your point here, but I think Blizzard just gave the tools to the modders to influence every moba that came after Warcraft 3. I don't think it was Blizzard who did the work here, but the modders. WoW-->first really huge MMO and became the standard format for one //I think there were very successful MMO's before WoW. Namely, Runescape. Sure WoW implemented some changes which would inspire MMO's to come, but I don't think they revolutionized the genre. Diablo still standard format for ARPGS like PoE is now //Okay you can have this one. Hearthstone? TCG that you can properly play online since card game format sort of outdated //I see where you're coming from, but I'm not entirely sure about this one. I feel like all they really did was make trading card games more accessible.
holy shit the only thing they didnt revolutionize for PC gaming was Shooters since fighters dont exist in pc games really
they definitely didnt invent any of the genres but they sure did revolutionize them Well first of all we can have different perspectives of what "a sudden, complete or marked change in something" entails. It might just be the case that I think that a "revolution" in gaming pertains to something "bigger" for lack of a better term. you kind of contradicted yourself here. The modders did the work in war3 but meanwhile dune 2 is revolutionary? we know dune 2 was a shit game, but it paved the way for BW so either you give blizzard credit for BW or you don't give the dota 2 modders credit obviously dota was created by modders but facilitated by battle.net and the blizzard map moding which was unreal I see your point. Basically what I said is that "Oh Blizzard didn't create MOBAs they only gave the community the tools to do so", but then I go around and say "Oh Dune 2 was revolutionary" when you are saying that basically the same thing happened. I think what I wanted to get across was that when Dune 2 came out, it was essentially the first RTS. You have a team of people who created a game, which was the first RTS. Yes they paved the way for others, and in a sense they only gave others the tools to do so, while they didn't contribute anything themselves. However, I believe that they did contribute something to the RTS - namely, they created the first one! Where for Warcraft 3, Warcraft 3 was not a MOBA. Instead, people outside of the Warcraft 3 production team used their map editor to create the first MOBA. Granted, it wouldn't have been possible to for them to do so if Blizzard never made the map editor. In a way, Blizzard did help create the first MOBA. However, I maintain that they only gave the tools - the community created the first MOBA. Dune 2 didn't just give the tools - I also think that they created the first RTS. And at the time no one had seen anything like it! But compared to today's standards, yeah Dune 2 didn't age well! I don't know if my distinction makes sense, or even if I made my point clear. And I concede that my point is possibly contradictory, as I don't know if that distinction that I attempted to make is even significant enough. Hope I cleared up the point that I was trying to make though.
zz probably RTS games were going to happen soon anyway with tech improving I don't think just making the first game in a genre is anywhere close to making a great game in a genre

Well yea it's silly to say there's been no gaming revolutions but I don't really see why you say ILM wasn't revolutionary to movies unless what you said means you dispute Frudgey's point? Even on the small scale without ILM there may never have been Pixar which falls in your earlier point surely. In fact looks like ILM "invented" CGI use. Idk how you can get more revolutionary than that.

With all the force and focus on lightsaber combat and the bloodline stuff and mythical creatures, it's closer to tales and fantasy, at least for the movies.
This x1000 thank you Alaric. I was literally just ranting to Caller about this at dinner last night lol. A detailed exposition would be exhausting, but the crux of it is that Star Wars is much more closely aligned to traditional monomyth/fantasy/etc. narratives than science fiction, which is the antithesis. If you substituted lightsabers with swords, Star Wars would be the exact same story. None of the "science fiction" is crucial to the story, which violates what constitutes a "scifi," or more broadly, speculative fiction story. Deeming that a scifi needs to be speculative is silly at best. It only restricts the types of stories you can tell through the genre.
