Wait, you're arguing that George Lucas REVOLUTIONIZED cinema with Star Wars, but you are at the same time wanting to argue that there has not been a revolution in the gaming industry ever?

This is why I said earlier: this can't be a discussion(if you hold a view like this).

Who said he revolutionized cinema with Star Wars? I've been talking about ILM not Star Wars. Did Frudgey mention Star Wars?

Ok, put ILM in place of Star Wars, the point is still ridiculous if it is indeed your stance. Frudgey has clarified that he doesn't ILM to have been revolutionary to movies either though(which I would also dispute), but it is a far more coherent stance.

Well yea it's silly to say there's been no gaming revolutions but I don't really see why you say ILM wasn't revolutionary to movies unless what you said means you dispute Frudgey's point? Even on the small scale without ILM there may never have been Pixar which falls in your earlier point surely. In fact looks like ILM "invented" CGI use. Idk how you can get more revolutionary than that.

I was saying that I would dispute Frudgey on that, because ILM was revolutionary.

Oh ok, think we on the same page lol

Does anyone know when Obsidian is likely to patch? Kind of sucks being stuck on my one character.

From what I got of Sci-fi's meaning, Star Wars isn't it at all because it doesn't dabble in what science brought to humanity/the setting, nor the social aspect of it (to sum up badly, I need to brush up on that ><).
With all the force and focus on lightsaber combat and the bloodline stuff and mythical creatures, it's closer to tales and fantasy, at least for the movies.

This x1000 thank you Alaric. I was literally just ranting to Caller about this at dinner last night lol.

A detailed exposition would be exhausting, but the crux of it is that Star Wars is much more closely aligned to traditional monomyth/fantasy/etc. narratives than science fiction, which is the antithesis. If you substituted lightsabers with swords, Star Wars would be the exact same story. None of the "science fiction" is crucial to the story, which violates what constitutes a "scifi," or more broadly, speculative fiction story.

I didn't say scifi needs to be speculative, I said scifi falls under speculative fiction as a genre. There's an implicit definition that scifi contains speculative elements, but if you actually read my later posts, you'll see I make nothing as asinine as the claim "scifi needs to be speculative."

And none of this has anything to do with my main point, which is Star Wars does not fall under "scifi" in the critical sense.

Clearly we need to redefine the two, contrasting genres of Sci-Fi: Science-Fiction and Sciencey-Fiction

Squares fall under the category of rectangles, that doesn't magically make them not rectangles.

Either way, it's as position I've seen in many "Scifi or not?" discussions over the years that irks me, so maybe I inferred more than you intended.

Guys. Labeling people dehumanizes them. Don't do the same to books.

Labeling in general is a strange principle to me. I totally understand why we do it. It makes things easier to categorize. But I feel that soooo many arguments and disagreements (from friendly conversations like what we have to heated hostile debates) stem from people pretty much talk about the same thing, just using different words. Speech is actually just such a terrible medium of communication. It is far too easy to misunderstand each other. And oh my god, translating from languages is NUTSO. The idioms that evolve throughout different language and culture that eventually become mainstream can be so confusing.

For example, if I were to call Frudgey my best friend in Sesotho I would say "Abuti Frudgey o motsoalle oa ka ea hloho ea khomo." In English that translates to "Boy Frudgey he friend of mine of the head of a cow." Even if you knew every word in Sesotho (or any language) it would make NO sense to you unless you lived there and had someone explain no no no, that combination of words doesn't mean "Boy Frudgey is the friend of the head of a cow OR the head of a cow himself", but that he is my "best friend".

Another example that I like to use is "Re Tsamaea" translates to "We walk". But people use it to mean we are going or leaving no matter the mode of transportation. I find this interesting because even if you are driving somehwere you rarely say we are driving, but be like hey, "re tsamaea!" The basotho people walk so much and have been for so long that it has transformed itself into the generic word or phrase for going or leaving (even though there are words for going or leaving, they are just not used as often). And then you hear things like, "Re tsama" which is just a shortened version, and while it may just seem like a shortened version it is pretty much slang. And at that point you start to think, well it doesn't have a real translatable meaning because it is a non word similar to "sup". So whenever someone was like, "Botle, re tsama!" (Botle is my Sesotho name) I equated it with someone being like "Mike, we making moves!" or "Mike, we rolling out!"

The world is a funny place and language is so interesting. I am excited for the day when we have evolved where we just communicate with thoughts. A mixture of words, images, and experiences we can draw upon to convey our true meaning.

ps If you are not married and younger than a certain age you are referred to as "Abuti", which means boy. If you are married or past a certain age you are referred to as "Ntate", which means man. There are certain exceptions such as if you are a young unmarried man in a position of authority (such as a teacher) then people will refer to you as Ntate. So Frudgey, I made the bold assumption given the general age of this forum and the fact that you are in college and called you Abuti rather than Ntate - no offfense was meant.

In French we usually use "to go" too, regardless of the means of transportation. We have verbs for "to drive", but not "to fly" for example (or rather, English can say "I fly to" to mean "I take the plane to" but French won't, 'cause it only means "I fly [like a bird]" save for a few specific instances), so we just say "I took the plane/train/boat to". I don't think we have a literal equivalent to "I rode" either.

Btw MoonBear, can I get a picture of the of the one who'll teach Marcus how to be a superior otter?

I'm surprised French "fly" doesn't only mean to run/flee, considering how many battles the French have flew from ))))))
