No. They maybe created huge changes in the genres themselves but they didn't revolutionize the whole industry. I don't really know what the movie industry would be like now without Lucas. Since we on liquid tend to be from BW we overstate the effect of blizzard on the industry I feel. They have caused huge things yes, but just not the same scope. If they maybe did something like Valve did with steam we could compare but even then valve's impact isn't as large as Lucas's. ID has had a bigger impact with Wolfenstein 3D honestly.

I think I have to agree with Numy on this one.
Sure Blizzard did some great things back in the day but I don't think they "revolutionized" the gaming industry.

really??? Brood war >>every RTS ever War3-->dota-->every moba WoW-->first really huge MMO and became the standard format for one Diablo still standard format for ARPGS like PoE is now Hearthstone? TCG that you can properly play online since card game format sort of outdated
holy shit the only thing they didnt revolutionize for PC gaming was Shooters since fighters dont exist in pc games really
they definitely didnt invent any of the genres but they sure did revolutionize them

What BW is just based on Warcraft which is just based on Dune. Dota wasn't made by blizzard and HS isn't anything new it's just the best executed product. WoW is just based on everquest. ARPGs I don't know enough to comment on but the rest of blizzards games tend to just be ideas taken from everywhere else then polished and executed better. None of that is revolutionary. Hell without Westwood there would be no Warcraft let alone Brood War. So while Brood War had a large impact on future games it didn't completely change or invent the landscape like prior titles did. I'd argue that BW was merely a more expanded War2 than anything else.
You guys should really read up more on Lucas honestly. The guys directing is most likely his least important involvement in the movie industry.

they definitely didnt invent any of the genres but they sure did revolutionize them Well first of all we can have different perspectives of what "a sudden, complete or marked change in something" entails. It might just be the case that I think that a "revolution" in gaming pertains to something "bigger" for lack of a better term.

Uh, if you take it like that then Star Wars is just fantasy + dramas... in space§§§
Gotta admit he did have a huge impact on merchandising though.
|
Star Wars is just mainstream SI-FI its as impactfull as cardstone is to TCG.

Again if you think we are talking about Star Wars when we talk about Lucas you are rather mistaken. If you want just a brief glimpse into his impact merely look at the ILM Wiki page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Light_&_Magic
I wonder where CGI would even be if Lucas wasn't around. No one at the time really grasped just how important the technology aside from him. He was unfortunately more focused on the tech then anything else in that he let Pixar go because he couldn't see the appeal of a full CG movie at the time.
He did a lot more than just CG as Alaric pointed out he had a large role on merchandising in movies as well. I know there are documentaries about this you can check out if you want a full picture of what he's done for the industry.

How can you get bigger I don't understand blizzard didnt invent any genres but they revolutionized them brood war was completely on another level from any other RTS the war3 and broodwar custom mapmaking capability also completely on another level from anything and lead to the invention of the moba genre I guess you can argue that diablo and WoW weren't revolutionary but in terms of popularity and how long they survived (d2/wow more than d1/d3 lol) they are insane
if blizzard werent' revolutionary can you give some examples as to who you think were? also blizzard were revolutionary only in terms of multiplayer obviously their singleplayer was great but theres a lot of great single player games

If you don't think WoW revolutionized MMOs then there's no further discussion possible, since that is far and beyond the most obvious example.
Edit: I could easily just say "well 2001: A Space Odyssey really is what broke ground on cinematic visual effects, so George Lucas didn't really revolutionize anything, just improved upon it."

I'd say revolutionary would be something that redefines the industry. I don't know what game company has done that myself. As for defining or redefining genres that's another story. You have Half Life 1 being the first fps that gives the protagonist(Player) an identity and story within the world. You have Dune 2 from Westwood literally creating the RTS genre. Even earlier than that you have ID with Wofl 3D making the first transition to 3D FPS gaming. Black Isles and Interplay defined the CRPG genre. I don't know which one did it first as they released Fallout and BG at really similar times so I think both had a huge impact on later games. There are tons of other examples I'm just not familiar enough to really talk about.
WoW did basically populrize/create the "themepark" MMO. That may be their biggest achievement. It's still largely within a single genre and not the industry as a whole. Subscription stuff was around before WoW and will be around after wow. Nothing really changed in that regard.
Battle.net(The original) was indeed incredible. The main issue is no one really adopted it so it's hard to say the impact of it. People did try a few times I think but I'm not sure.

What would that have to do with CGI? Maybe another analogy please.

From what I got of Sci-fi's meaning, Star Wars isn't it at all because it doesn't dabble in what science brought to humanity/the setting, nor the social aspect of it (to sum up badly, I need to brush up on that ><). With all the force and focus on lightsaber combat and the bloodline stuff and mythical creatures, it's closer to tales and fantasy, at least for the movies.
About the story part, didn't even Doom give you some kind of story? Or is it meant as "the first time there's a fleshed-out story with cutscenes and other characters interacting with you"?
|
There was a kind of "things are around here kill them" kind of story in Doom but didn't have an actual "protagonist". Wolf 3D had more plot I think and character but it was just too early too really be able to flesh out a story. The focus was still on just kill dudes. Half Life set the bar for how a fps game can still be more than just kill guys. You can compare it to quake 2 that came out just a year earlier which was again a just kill stuff, the story and character were only there to facilitate that idea. It's what allowed games like Halo to spawn or even Spec Ops:The Line is a better example.
edit: I actually kind of dislike star wars since now they even made Star trek into Star Wars when Star Wars was meant to be the dumb action cousin of star trek all along. Fucking JJ couldn't just make a new IP instead of butchering the essence of star trek like that.

Starwars didn't have the time to go into it in a movie format. Supposedly the EU expounds upon that. Judging the series only by the movies is silly.

But none of the EU stuff is cannon now that Disney bought the franchise, is it?
I mean, nobody is even judging the entire series by the movies. They're just saying the movies don't really have too much of a sci-fi feel to them. Wtf?
I mean he did specifically say he means the movies.

I narrowed down your post to this part, to show how you're minimizing WoW's impact on all of gaming. It'd be like saying that CoD:Modern Warfare wasn't revolutionary because it was 'just a new take on FPS,' when it completely changed the face of console gaming, with a little handoff from the Halo games that came before it(like WoW from EQ). Something doesn't have to be 100% original to be revolutionary(thus my 2001:A Space Odyssey analogy with regards to Star Wars visual effects).

This x1000 thank you Alaric. I was literally just ranting to Caller about this at dinner last night lol.
A detailed exposition would be exhausting, but the crux of it is that Star Wars is much more closely aligned to traditional monomyth/fantasy/etc. narratives than science fiction, which is the antithesis. If you substituted lightsabers with swords, Star Wars would be the exact same story. None of the "science fiction" is crucial to the story, which violates what constitutes a "scifi," or more broadly, speculative fiction story.

did people really classify star wars as sci fi though
