"Gimmick" is closer to "cheese" in my mind. People watch high elo streamers because they are good/entertaining/etc. I'm not a particularly good player, but right now, my gimmick is Projekt Viktor, and people seem entertained by it (I have one new no-TL viewer purely because I'm playing Viktor).

Just saying, Wave I would 100% watch you Lets Play games

Monte wasn't just trying to be a popular content creator, he had a specific content in mind similar to a sort of Day 9 Daily. Day 9 had personality as well, but his initial success is extremely tied to the esteem he was held in the BW community, on the back of his very high level ability.
Monte wasn't garbage at League or anything, but he wasn't a top tier player either, which is generally what the public will expect from content of that type. He was good enough to help a very very large % of the playerbase which I think is why he started doing it, but unfortunately clout plays a large part, and in this scenario clout comes in the form of Elo/League+Division standing. So what you're saying is, his show didn't work out because the second half of his name was -gomery and not Cristo? Well that Monte got his clout through being an OGN caster, whether that should or shouldn't count/work is irrelevant, it put him high in the eyes of the many(also I do think he's pretty damn good at his job FWIW, not perfect and not always correct but yea). Could you give a quick rundown of what happened?

one thing I struggle with is that I find it strange to like, look at the camera when I'm talking to viewers
idk if it's something I should do? I also don't know if this type of critique is something that applies to me as well - I feel like I'm usually pretty ok at explaining my mindset. But looking down at the camera feels like I'm staring at all of your souls.

Basically it was a long game that ended up getting into a super safe/passive phase at around the 50 minute/1 hr mark because iG got a Rapier, and then neither team wanted to commit 100% to a fight, so there was a lot of posturing and shit for about 20-30 minutes.
The crowd was getting visibly frustrated, and Ayesee rather than trying to see the upside in the interesting points in the game more or less served to just egg on the crowd which was more or less booing and jeering by the end.
As PX mentioned, the Korean commentators were joking around and doing a lot of the same shit and were doing it way more, but again, I see that as being more excusable because their commentary was purely for the stream and not the live audience.

Only you know how you feel, but the quiet-ish muttering to yourself being such a contrast to your personality when talking to chat or when the game freezes or something definitely makes me think you feel uncomfortable.
though its entirely possible that a better microphone and setup would bring more out in your voice and alleviate that entirely.

Eye-deally (har har) you'd have your camera near eye level so the glance from game to audience is only a slight shift. its something you get used to, but the way you have it now, you could talk entirely to your monitor, but occasionally glance or gesture to your camera. its a feeling you have to shake, and part of the reason that stage trained actors adjusting to film can sometimes have issues taking direction

That makes me wonder how Wave would come across if he did LPs as YT recorded video rather than streamed.

Ayesee used to never be the one who focused on interesting points or had good insights into the game of Dota. He was pretty negative especially in tedious matches comparing to someone like syndereN. He had gotten a bit better since then though.

That was disgusting. He basically turned the whole crowd against the players.

Way I see it, if I'm streaming and I have one or two people in chat to bounce off of that adds more to it than just the act of playing, I don't care if I have ten or ten million viewers. Not to say that I'd be against having massive viewership to stream to. lol

Should get some co op lets plays with soniv or something. Combine the viewer base!
Also think wave sounds fine, don't get the uncomfortable feeling at all.

Yeah, that's partially just the awkwardness of my setup. If I follow through with my plan to get 3 reasonably sized monitors rather than my 2 differently sized TVs, it will be nicer. Although that won't be happening for a little while cuz of monies - maybe depending on my upcoming bonus/raise...

I think it depends on the game. Like when I stream Isaac for example if I have stuff to explain to people it's a lot easier to talk about stuff but in terms of coming up with a steady stream of interesting jabber based on nothing? It's pretty difficult. In DS it was propbably easier as well because I was constantly encountering new things but when I play Isaac it's all old hat to me so without any viewer interaction it's really tough to just talk all the time. That's not to say I'm uncomfortable when I have nothing to talk about, but I revert more to what I'm like when I'm on my own playing a game and have nobody watching, which I think is natural.

I mean that's basically it. I was saying somewhere recently that I think even if I never got more popular ever, if I had a constant 20-30 viewers to get chat going consistently I'd be super happy with that.

Just having a handful of active viewers in chat is enough, really. And although I'm not really big on twitch memes, I thoroughly enjoyed the other night when people were spamming random shit - it's actually entertaining when you're on the producing end.

Ayesee is still one of the worst casters in dota, but then again, there aren't many good ones
I'm not a fan of his voice/casting, he misses a lot of stuff and wrong on a lot of his calls, such as item purchases/gank timings/lineups.
Giff moar Winter+1 and Sunsfan/synderan, also Merloobi, but he's now a player again.
Also, holy fuck, Sedoy you should not be alive after that lol....
