Monte wasn't just trying to be a popular content creator, he had a specific content in mind similar to a sort of Day 9 Daily. Day 9 had personality as well, but his initial success is extremely tied to the esteem he was held in the BW community, on the back of his very high level ability.
Monte wasn't garbage at League or anything, but he wasn't a top tier player either, which is generally what the public will expect from content of that type. He was good enough to help a very very large % of the playerbase which I think is why he started doing it, but unfortunately clout plays a large part, and in this scenario clout comes in the form of Elo/League+Division standing. So what you're saying is, his show didn't work out because the second half of his name was -gomery and not Cristo? Well that Monte got his clout through being an OGN caster, whether that should or shouldn't count/work is irrelevant, it put him high in the eyes of the many(also I do think he's pretty damn good at his job FWIW, not perfect and not always correct but yea). Can't control it. This guy I watched a bunch started streaming a week ago, now has a steady 100+ viewers. I mean he has a gimmick (he's ranked #2 overall in limited MTGO play) but still. Argh.
Whatevs I'm gonna stream a draft while I have the chance. Don't really expect anyone to watch but at least I'll have it recorded to go over all the dumb mistakes I make.
And fuck now I don't have enough time to do one before I have to go pick up the guy...ugh I guess I'll risk one later tonight while he's sleeping not really a gimmick and most probably why What I have is a gimmick. Being ranked #2 is something people would want to watch lol I mean a gimmick as in 'a specific reason for people to watch.' So I'd still count that #2 player as having a gimmick, it's just a particularly good one? I don't think I've ever had a proper gimmick to hook people in. Blind DS run comes close I suppose? Ginger hair and a smooth radio voice don't count as a good gimmick? I think if Wave had a more concrete schedule he could've been a popular Let's Play-er. He has the voice and the stream personality to pull it off. I don't mean to add to your lamentations about streaming Wave but sometimes you're just a little too late to the game or 'born in the wrong time' if you will and that sucks but it happens.*
*This doesn't mean stop trying, maybe your break is still ahead of you. I mean, the bolded is basically it, and it's why I really should stop worrying about trying to be popular and just stream for fun, but I can't help myself.
I'm 99% sure I've talked with you about this before, but I've had some of the same thoughts about it from almost the same standpoint(I couldn't stream for a long time because of bad internet), and it sucks because there was definitely a point in time where I think I had the ability+personality+game selection to do the streaming thing(before streaming was popular I had an even better shot but that's unfair on myself to think about), both in WoW(lol I know, but I was in a top tier guild and pvp'd at a high enough level with some 'names') and League(although my competitive drive for League was never really there so that's less of a sure thing).
I think my internet could handle streaming now but I haven't given it a shot and I don't know what I would stream(yangostack? lolol... I don't know that everyone in the stack would be comfortable with me doing that either).

Like when I stream Isaac for example if I have stuff to explain to people it's a lot easier to talk about stuff but in terms of coming up with a steady stream of interesting jabber based on nothing? It's pretty difficult. In DS it was propbably easier as well because I was constantly encountering new things but when I play Isaac it's all old hat to me so without any viewer interaction it's really tough to just talk all the time. That's not to say I'm uncomfortable when I have nothing to talk about, but I revert more to what I'm like when I'm on my own playing a game and have nobody watching, which I think is natural. I was saying somewhere recently that I think even if I never got more popular ever, if I had a constant 20-30 viewers to get chat going consistently I'd be super happy with that. The main difference I was thinking of was that you can pre-record your gameplay and plan out your script if its recorded video content.

I used to try to come up with a couple interesting things to talk about when I casted our old LiquidPractice games because you really have to try and fill dead air when solo casting, but I don't think the pressure is necessarily there when you're solo streaming? Maybe it is? I dunno. I think I'll probably end up being more conscious of it now, but I don't know how to solve that problem, especially if I'm playing a game like MTGO where I do a lot of thinking out loud and there's a lot of dead time/waiting for stuff to happen.

you guys just need to advertise more if you want more viewers otherwise you'll just sit at the bottom of the twitch video list because it's ordered by view count, just spam up a subreddit or something? told soniv to post his stream at the end of each league game but he said no (it's honestly not a bad idea tbh) so i dunno what you guys want to do about it exactly

I don't do it cuz it makes me feel like a dirty whore

As long as you using proper protection the dirtier the whore the better. Just embrace your inner whore Soniv.

that's just what you need to be to rake in the long time dough

Well you're already dirty for how often you bite the dust during a given game. I'm not sure about the whoring part, though. You wouldn't happen to have given sort of compensation for the overlay, by any chances?

I OFFERED TO COMMISSION HIM BUT HE SAID NO

Well the whore doesn't pay the customer. That doesn't make sense Soniv.

That doesn't make sense Soniv. Hahaha He's right though. It looks awful. That #2 MTGO guy I watched today spams his stream to everyone he plays. At one point he had a guy cuss him out for winning and he full on apologized to the guy for winning with a 'worse deck' and spammed his stream.
I'll admit to being a bit of a whore while I was trying hard to get popular but most often it's truly the only way, even if it feels like shit. This goes back to that conversation about thorin and reddit.

Also think wave sounds fine, don't get the uncomfortable feeling at all.
Yeah, I never really noticed the uncomfortable thing either, and heck, he gets me to watch Hearthstone now and then when it's an evil, evil game lol.

I feel like that Wave and Soniv could make it so that their streams are more popular, but they're restricted by their principles, or are just simply busy (Wave in particular).
Echoing what was said before, I think Wave would be more popular if he streamed more. I don't watch Wave's stream for the gameplay, I watch Wave's stream for Wave.
I think Soniv has a good personality for streaming, but I think his stream would be better if he had more commentary in it. Soniv is an intelligent man, so he could easily pepper his gameplay with insightful wisdom. Mind you I haven't watched a whole lot of Soniv's stream, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
And like I said, I think the two of them could easily get to the point where their streams are popular. I just think that they just don't either have the time or are willing to do whatever means necessary to promote their stream.

here you go I guess?
EDIT: Also, I believe I've terrorized IHs with Teemo recently. The Euros can attest. You guys should ban him tonight, probably.

I like streaming Mechwarrior, it's a small community so I don't gotta worry about being da best and I think I can be at least mildly entertaining. I just need to figure out settings so I don't lag in game. Half the time I can play normally and then the other half I get 600+ ping in game. Never drop frames just lag in game for me personally.
|
Why don't you guys become like a streaming posse? Like set up streaming schedules, announce the games you'll play in group etc, dick around in said games / or serious mode them?
|
We thought about it once but people's schedules are just too different and random.

Too bad, was looking forward to some new streaming paradigm being set.

Beating Marmy's Pantheon != terrorizing with Teeto Doesn't Pantheon do exceptionally well against Teemo though? It sounds like an achievement to me if the Teemo beats the Pantheon in lane.
Of course I don't have the whole story so who knows.
