I dunno, I'm still deciding. They say write what you know, so I'm thinking psychological horror, but I dunno if I can make a whole novel out of it. #thingsReqDoes I could just keep like a journal of all the things I see out of the corner of my eye when I'm sleep deprived and in depressive episodes, would be plenty scary lol.
Actually that's not a bad premise. You guys ever watched/read those sleep deprivation study stuff? Not the Russion Experiment one, but like when people record their experiences staying awake for a week with no outside contact.

Yeah, people go insane quick. Funny thing, the brain doesn't like not sleeping.

Funny thing, the brain doesn't like not sleeping. I love that it's also kind of still an unanswered question. I thought I read somewhere that the best reason researches had for why we sleep is "because we get tired". There's no real processes that occur only when we sleep, as far as we can tell we sleep to rest and nothing else.
The human body is weird.

Yeah I've also read that.
It's got to be related to some electrical wiring in the brain that messes up with the psyche.

It really is crazy just how intricate all the system and processes are. I try to read up on some biology/anatomy or whatever and it's like how the heck did we get to here.

There's no real processes that occur only when we sleep, as far as we can tell we sleep to rest and nothing else. The human body is weird. The most basic explanation of sleep is to conserve energy during times of inefficiency. Creatures with superior night vision sleep during the day, and vice versa. There are species of fish that evolved in cave settings (no night or day) which never sleep. Dolphins turn off their need for sleep after giving birth, staying awake 24 hours a day for weeks to protect their young with no signs of sleep deprivation related fatigue. There is also a memory component to sleep which is more complex. Your brain performs neuronal strengthening of some connections, related to your experiences, and weakens others. The memory stuff is less worked out and this is only one memory related activity that happens during sleep.

Fascinating, do you do work in this area or is this just personal research?
So what happens if someone remains sleep deprived for long periods of time? Aside from getting really really tired and passing out, are there any adverse effects in the long/short term?

Ok, but I mean can you honestly just check that question off in your mind as answered? There's just so many parts and pieces that don't really work unless they're all there at the same time.
All I know is I tried a coursera class on human physiology and was like wat. The complexity is mind-blowing at the intro level lol.

Well your question was "how did we get here?" which is simple evolution, which in case is mostly trial and error.

So what happens if someone remains sleep deprived for long periods of time? Aside from getting really really tired and passing out, are there any adverse effects in the long/short term? Neuroscience/psych student. I am leaving for class atm and can explain in detail when I return. There are adverse effects for both long and short term sleep deprivation. Attention being the most obvious one. Think about those times where you sit there and are like, what was i thinking/going to do, or when you miss an important stimulus (ie car passing and you trying to change into his lane)? The duration of those gaps increase with sleep deprivation. People that have slept well shake it off and form their brain to pay attention, while sleep deprived people don't. Also after missing just a single night of sleep increases immune system activity, as though your body is responding to an illness. Long term effects are things like depression, impaired learning and memory. I get home in 5ish hours, bye for now.

Eh, I like SCP for the fantastical, quirky, or simply intriguing stuff. You can be creepy and unsettling without resorting to creepy-pasta stuff (see: what Fallout does with former Vaults' exploration), nor giving a bunch of details and stuff.
I heavily dislike the stair (and plate a bit less) from what Req linked partly because it just relies so hard on Slenderman/other creepy-pasta stuff (and partly because I deal really badly with situations of isolation, mind thrives on their "no safety net from knowing there's people around if stuff goes wrong" for panic attacks >>), the disc on the other end was pretty interesting until it started giving too much information (not that it's bad, but the SCP loses a bit of its mysterious nature if your knowledge of it is too detailed).
I'd rather read those that are funny or mysterious or eerie without relying on describing jump scares, giving gruesome details, or always relating to deaths and such. They're often more creative too, which is a huge plus to keep me interested.

Dislike as in you think it's bad or as in it's just not appealing to you? I think, overall, their creepypasta psychhorror stuff is well done in most cases.
I think the stair one is rather brilliant because it gives enough details and accounts that you think you know what's happening, but still remains in that air of "never going to touch that shit with a 100ft pole".
I heavily agree on the disc, though. It's fantastic for the first couple of entries, where you have no idea what the hell is happening, but the latter ones try to "explain" it too much.
I have a few more that I used to really like but I actually haven't visited in quite a long time. I hear Containment Breach is still coming along, though.

This thread is so slow. You guys are the worst distraction ever. I'm actually going to have to accomplish work pretty soon here if this keeps its pace.
You can do better.

You can do better. Yes people shit post more please so i can read it instead of dwelling on my fainted car and lack of revives in my inventory. Not to mention my financial reset to student levels combined with the 3hrs longer my commute is.

You can do better. Read the top ones, SCP is one of my favorite distractions.
