As far as disturbing shows go, I won't watch sons of anarchy with my wife because it's literally violence gore and rape just for the hell of it on that show, but even worse is probably criminal minds. The shit the writers come up with for serial killers to do on that show actually made me stop watching it. I mean I love a good horror/gore movie (SoA took its dealings with it too seriously when the action was far from, so I was less disturbed by it and more 'this is just stupid') but some of that criminal minds stuff is so truly disturbing and worst of all plausible. AHS is definitely more drama and off-screen horror(or gore), barring a couple zombie-themed scenarios in one of the seasons. i definitely would recommend it if you like those sorts of things, each season is self contained as a story so you don't need to worry about that sort of thing. literally completely new characters.

I haven't played it yet, though while I expect it's good, it's probably not Black-Isle-golden-age-good, but I have no clue why you'd ever expect that. You don't go into games expecting them to be that good, because that just sets you up to be disappointed (see SC2). Bethesda games aren't RPGs, IMO. They're more like exploration games with ham-fisted RPG mechanics tacked on top. The very idea that I can't expect games made in 2015 to not be as solid as those made 2001 just breaks my little nerd heart. I have no idea about the series I'm just looking for something that is actual open ended preferably that doesn't also make me sick after an hour of playing it due to camera view.

I mean, the good games in 2001 were anomalous too. Most of the games released then were also shit, it's just that after playing video games for like 15-20 years, there's gonna be some outliers that were exceptionally good and you happen to remember those. It's still unreasonable to expect games that come out to be as good as the outliers that got lucky.

I guess that's the expected answer. Saying it's silly is obvious and doesn't fix anything, but really it is silly.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask to have the same amount of options and freedom in a rpg made in 2001 as a modern blockbuster rpg made in 2011. I mean I could understand more thematic experiences(along the lines of bioware qusi linear/look at this awesoem story RPG) but when your game is supposed to be some open world awesome freedom and it's being outdone in that freedom by a game made by a now defunct studio a decade previously. We got problems in the gaming industry.

I do that too (mostly because too lazy since I know there's at least one, if not two gyms under 15 minutes from my flat). Prob will have to do more though because atm it's not enough to prevent me from gaining weight. Aging surely plays a part since after years of never putting on weight (even being underweight) no matter what I eat and in which quantities gotta catch up at some point and I'm past 26 now. Viktor is closer (in design, release date doesn't matter) to the old champions than the young ones, so don't be surprised. Pantheon would fuck him up too, but Panth's trades take too long so W would kinda work on him.

We got problems in the gaming industry. Indeed. A lot of studios now chase after profit with DLCs and fluff rather than polishing and innovating. Of course, there are polished products, but there are a lot of turds out there too.

I mean 2001 is a bad example for that, because 2001 was an insane year for game releases. runescape, FFIX, Black and white, Bejeweled, throne of Bhaal, FFX, Advance wars, Silent hill 2, Ico, GTA 3, Wrath of Cortex, Stronghold, DMC, Halo, Super monkey ball, Melee, Pikmin, Arcanum, EDIT: forgot animal crossing, Lord of Destruction, galactic battlegrounds, Train simulator, fatal frame entire genres were defined that year.

Ideally it could be an incremental process like you say, but the industries never really work that way. If you think about it, other media are exactly the same, it's not really unique to games. Like other than the obvious technological advancements that apply to both industries, can you really say that the creative/design elements in movies are better now than they were 20 years ago?

I remember getting Advance Wars at the videogame store and I thought I was 1-2 years older when it came out. Man the memories with that store.

Its only slowly over time, it tends to happen in jumps, someone with a vision drags the medium along with him all at once, and then the people iterate on that until the next great mind comes along. I'd say most of the advances in film in the last 20 years have come from shit people outside of film rarely notice as good or exceptional. Cinematography has improved leaps since then.
