Cook is also pretty darn good at "Show, don't tell", which is a huge plus in my book. He can make you think "this character is cool!" without ever being anything but matter-of-factly in his descriptions of him, and at the same time show you the behaviour/actions of another one who you'd deem as "that badass dark stranger" in most other series and make you exclaim "that dude's a tool!" without ever wording it or resorting to the kind of exageration you see in parodies either. | ||

I usually go in with a pretty definite story outline and try to write a bit each day. Pacing yourself is good but don't feel obligated to write like 1333 words a day or whatever. Usually I end up cramming in like 20K+ over Thanksgiving break because I fall behind-- word count varies huge amounts from day to day. It's just something you really have to commit to. You can join the Nano group on Facebook or go on the website for advice and help, the community is pretty good. | ||
