I still don't understand the inherent desire to avoid debates. Debates are interesting, conflicting viewpoints are interesting. Now, obviously, religious debates can get heated, but that doesn't make them automatically bad. If people enter the discussion with the mindset to have a discussion, I see no problem with it.

Basically this is my viewpoint. I mean, I've seen things get heated in this thread in the past couple of days, but I sincerely love debates. For me it's not about right or wrong but rather it's about getting exposed to different viewpoints! I think being aware of other people's perspectives greatly enriches our lives!

Like Zeus, God, Jesus, Shiva, Spaghetti Monster, Joeseph Smith, etc. are all up in the heavens tryna run the world. But they screw up just like us. But when a diety screws up, it's a much bigger screw up right? I know religion is not always a kosher subject but I'd be interested in anyone who wanted to share their views. ps I'm still not convinced of anything and I don't think I ever will be. Isaac Asimov's The Last Question is about as reasonable as the Bible to me. I really gotta see something to believe it/understand it. I'll probably be agnostic forever but I like the idea of believing in something up there. Even if it's just one God letting us make a fuck ton of mistakes, cause that's how you learn right? double ps Never flying Malaysian Airlines lol I like the idea of all the religions arguing things out. Or just American Gods style deities. But also the idea of all religions arguing together just makes me think of a sitcom or manga where every deity is in high school. Hijinks ensue. You could all it "On High school" or something like that. ![]()

It's pretty good. | ||

Show of hands, how many people are going to be arguing for the non-religious side? Pretty much everybody? Is it really a debate then? And yet, on the last page, several people have been entertaining thoughts of multiple deities and stuff? Personally, I don't believe in any sort of "higher" being, but I have no issues with people believing in whatever the hell they want to. My biggest issue with religion is that it's the #1 cause of war and conflict in history, which is decidedly the opposite of what religion should be doing.

Also a comics about the same thee deities being portrayed as roommates, but I can't remember its name for the life of me (Les Wriggles' song is called Dieubouddhallah, but it's in French so you won't get it). ... Damn, writing the band's name in French makes me inconsciously switch to French for the next few words if I don't pay attention.

but then again I can't honestly say I don't have issue with people who believe in supernatural. That's my problem, not anybody else's though

That's not true, though it is a common point of contention. It is a cause of many conflicts, but most wars in history were caused by territorial disputes or political conflicts. Major wars of recent memory (Revolutionary War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Civil War, Cold War, etc) had little to nothing to do with religion. According to the Encyclopedia of Wars, of the 1,763 major conflicts in recorded history, only 123 of them were classified as having been fought over religious differences. That’s just under 7 percent. In fact, the wars in the Middle East (which is really just one conflict that's been ongoing) and the Crusades are the only real big examples of conflict and war caused by religion.

My biggest issue with religion is that it's the #1 cause of war and conflict in history, which is decidedly the opposite of what religion should be doing. First of all, I'm not very educated on the different types of religion out there, so please take my opinion with a grain of salt. Like Soniv, I don't believe in any higher beings. And like what Galt said, if there are so many different religions with many different gods, how does one distinguish which one(s) exist? Are there multiple gods out there? That's not something that I've considered too much myself, although I could see that as a possibility. And while I don't believe in a god, someone could maybe sell me on the idea of a creationist god. A creationist god I can see existing, whereas something like a benevolent god I have a much harder time accepting. And that's not to say that I think having a religion is a bad thing, quite the contrary! I think there are many good things about having a religion! I think like everything else in life, there are pros and cons to being religious! Again, there are merely my opinions and I don't mean to offend anybody with them! It's all about being generous and helping those less fortunate and shit like that, who cares which religion that person follows? I know a lot of the violence comes from the religious extremists, and it's likely some confirmation bias on my part, but it just seems silly to want to kill people for not believing in the same invisible being that you do.

I know a lot of the violence comes from the religious extremists, and it's likely some confirmation bias on my part, but it just seems silly to want to kill people for not believing in the same invisible being that you do. I think part of the reason for that is because I think that religion is a very easy thing to scapegoat. (Especially when you don't hold the same religious views) Also I'm inclined to believe that humans have been killing each other for differences in opinions for quite some time now, and religion would certainly be one of those "differences in opinions". Of course there are several different things that people have disagreed on and have killed for, such as politics, who owns what, etc. Humans have known war for a very, very long time. Right, but I'd argue that for resources people will fight for them out of necessity, so the need is greater anyways. So for example, lets say that you and I believe in different things. Sure I might hate you and want to kill you, but then what would that accomplish? It might help with some political dealings or acquisition of land or something, but then at that point I'd be killing you for resources. Likewise, say you had fresh water and that was something I desperately needed. I'm going to kill you for the water because I need that to survive, or at the very least it'll improve my quality of living if I kill you for the water. If I hate you then that's just an added bonus. Not to say that people don't kill each other for petty things like differences in opinions, but I just think it might be easier to rally people to fight a war for resources because resources are something that we need. Of course, this is just my opinion. P.S. Don't worry Alaric I don't hate you and I don't have plans to kill you! + Show Spoiler + Yet.
