I'm more than 10 years out of high school and I can still remember how blatantly false this is. iuno man that seems pretty strait forward to me. there is a difference between not respecting her answer, like believing you know better and can swoon her if you just keep trying, and legitimately believing that when you tell someone you like them and they say "i like you better as a friend" that's not a rejection. I thought that was like the #1 most common rejection ever. It is, but that doesn't mean it's so easy to just drop what you're feelings are, expecially if they've been obsessively harbored for years at a time. A lot of the time people take any sort of nicety as an 'in' in some way, so in a rejection that is not completely direct leaving no room for euphemism or misinterpretation, hope can and will be retained. i understand what you are saying but i imagine in a lot of cases the one being lusted after would actually like to stay friends tho and then what do you do. or do you believe that once someone puts someone in the relationship zone there is no hope to remain friends.

This is a tough one. I can't exactly speak from experience here...I sort of experienced it from the other side but I never really had to deal with it up front. Essentially it requires a lot of emotional maturity and that is a lot to ask from some people. It's also a factor of age and experience.

I'm more than 10 years out of high school and I can still remember how blatantly false this is. That doesn't make it any more correct to feel lol. There are many things from high school that I thought/felt that I'm glad I've learned to (at least partially) get over. Could she be more straight and honest with him? Sure. But I can also imagine she wouldn't want to hurt him or make things awkward. It's not really her fault that he sees "I like you more as a friend" as "maybe if you tell me you love me, it will change everything". Real life ain't no romcom Which is exactly why she doesn't need to make romcom bullshit excuses. Of course it's not her fault that he feels this way, and he needs to work through his feelings himself, but she can at least do her part to not make things more complicated for him by being as upfront and honest as possible. Again, much of the time as cynical or hopeless as this may sound, the best way for this guy to get over this shit is to drop all contact. It is exceedingly difficult to get over somebody when you have to see them and interact with them constantly. Edit: Like I get the counterpoint to the argument, it's not her responsibility to deal with his feelings, but complete unwavering honesty is the best course of action here. Lovesick teenagers/young adults/whatever are absolutely NOT logical for the most part, so yes they will take attempts to 'spare feelings' as hope, as dumb as you may think that sounds.
I agree that honesty would ultimately be best. I'm just playing devil's advocate. I used to be even more clueless about people than I am now, and I was happy when I figured my shit out.

Also BP I'm not saying what she did was wrong, I just disagree with it, because I've seen where this could go. If you don't completely stonewall these things you never know what might happen.

I don't generally get into this kind of stuff but more then likely yeah after you admit your feelings or god forbid the relationship falls apart you don't get to be "just friends" anymore. I'm sure someone has the story of how it worked out for them as just friends but for most people that's not how it works. Even more so for love struck/broken people you don't want to hang out with someone you know will never see you as anything beyond a friend and you care for them deeply.
