Don't get me wrong, I think it's good we get to discuss this rather than TI4 funding having been terrible or "only" meet its goals. Still, I'm fairly cautious about the future. Typically when things blow all expectations, figuring out the "ok where do we go from here then?" part is often the hardest next step and what trips people up the most. the main thought i have is, first place at TI gets an invite for the next one. if you are already on top and going to be invited to the next one, why retire if you still want to play the game. you can only make more money next year. i don't think you could win a tournament if your only motivation was the prize and not be a competitive person or like the game you play. as you get older i can see a upper 20's or 30 year old saying "i want to go out on top, this is my last tournament" and retiring after winning TI4, but i can't see say Arteezy winning TI4 before he's even 20 and deciding he's done. Well at 20, you can be like "there's my college fund, time to get a stable career now". I just won a gaming tournament and a million dollars! Time to go to school and study boring ass shit so I can get an even more boring desk job! As for the rtz tangent, 4k is chump change in comparison to 500k+ for first place that he stands to make from this tournament. Most people who live in the 9-5 world will say, win the tournament, get the money, and go to school to join the grind. As it is the Safe to do thing in the long run. 500k also lets you just grind it out and keep playing for that legacy I was talking about earlier, and juding by how much fun he and his team have in both streams, tournaments and together I doubt (80% sure), you'll see them retire since they enjoy what they're doing so much. I wanted to talk mostly about TI since 1mil is no joke. As a grizzled 9-5er I would definitely say to stay in the community, especially for any T1/T2 teams. Even if it doesn't pan out competitively there's still a lot of other jobs like casting, etc. 9-5 feels boring, like what you do doesn't really matter, it's safe but not really (2007 screwed up a lot of people and an increasing number of college graduates are having a ton of difficulty finding jobs), and it feels less exciting, that you're not really in control of your life.
Of course this might be me and my post-graduation crisis voice talking as I try to find out what's next in my life but I think there's definitely something wrong with trying to "play it safe". I think that's the reason why so many college graduates are in trouble right now.

Whoa, hey now...
Just because someone works 9-5 doesn't mean they dont find enjoyment or meaning in their job. If you think what you do doesn't matter at your job its because your job isn't the best fit for you. That doesn't mean everyone dislikes working or feels like their job doesn't matter.
That being said, I believe everyone should strive to do what they love, or at least try. You definitely shouldn't just "pick a safe route". At the end of the day failure is a part of life, and can happen no matter what you are doing; Even if you pick the safe route you can still fail. Might as well try your best at doing what you love.
If you are not feeling challenged and feeling like your job is important / worth it, then I think the best move is to just move on. Move up. Challenge yourself. I personally worked as a welder for a while, went back to school to become an engineering technologist, worked for a bit more, went back to school to get a degree in engineering. Honestly, you dont have to pick the "best way" or the safe way. Pick whatever way makes you happy. Its not about money, its about feeling fulfilled in your life.
Who knows, in five years I might go back to school for a masters, I might start a business, i might stay where I am at and start a family with my girl. I didn't make all the best choices, I failed a lot, but ultimately I learned a lot too. Realistically, I could have gotten to where I am now straight from Highschool. I had a full academic scholarship to take whatever I pleased and I just... didn't know what i wanted. I started working in a Fabrication shop on a whim, basically. But I dont regret my path, I've learned a lot and I've also felt fulfilled the whole way through.
Something about the way the world works makes people so afraid of failure... If there is one thing BW and LoL have taught me is that failure is inevitable and that it doesn't make you a failure, merely shows you what you still have to learn. I think failure is important. No matter where you are, you still have your whole life ahead of you.

Happy 4th my American friends. Shoot off some fireworks, or if you live in Florida, scare those damned birds away.

Congrats to Alaric for winning liquibets. I play liquibets still. I believe the best I ever got for bw was top ten before I failed on something and dropped down to 100s. Not enough games so one vote has the potential to screw a person over hard if they aren't careful(which I'm not. I mostly got lucky, and explains why I dropped down fast again). Pretty cool that you won!
Also such a shame I missed the TI4 chatter. The discussion was interesting.

Watching Ceo2014 incredibly good top 8.

Heads up for those of you who want to play smite,
This weekend all the gods are unlocked and F2P. (4th-6th) If you want to check it out.

Boshy run at SGDQ was awesome, that's all I know about it.

Because twitch viewership equates popularity/quality?
Cod ghosts and blackops 2 has more viewers then tf2 but I think we both know what's the better game.
Speaking of, as I've got nothing to do tomorrow I'ma spend the day blowing people up in tf2. Like a proper American. In other news I'am now in possession of 3DS XL, now to get games.

I overheard that the later Battlefield games had a budget of about 500-750 million dollar, so don't discount how much money Valve actually has (yes different firms I know, just an example of the money they are dealing with). Similar prize pools should not be out of the question. Also, don't forget the possibility of one of the TI champions choosing to start his own team or other organisation, becoming a dota philantropist.

Everyone knows that esports is mostly for money laundering/advertising as it is a big money sink.

I think all CoD's are a pile of shit and it stands to reason why the last 4 releases all have similar LOW player counts on steam.
Still better then the shite that is TF2.

I don't really know where the idea that TF2 was a good game came from.
