Also the ex-coach of Germany's curling team once held me as a I vomited, so that has to count for something.

If you ask a competitor if they'd rather have a gold or two silvers, the vast majority will opt for the former. Therefore, any ranking system has to value a gold as more than 2x the value of a silver. So a 5-2-1 scoring system makes the most sense.

If that's the case then I'm pretty sure they'd rather have a silver than 2 bronze, and the bottom end of that spead falls through.

That would make it Russia 72 Canada 70 USA 70 Norway 64 Germany 52

The silver-bronze difference is not nearly as pronounced as the gold-silver difference. Indeed, there is a common Chinese quip (not sure if it's common in other countries as well?) that the happiest person on the podium is the bronze medalist - the bronze medalist is just happy to podium, whiel the silver medalist can only think about how he/she could've potentially gotten gold. Edit: I guess it's not limited to China, since it appears to have originated in a 1995 study. http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/psp/69/4/603/

And besides, it's a quip, which inherently implies it's not some rigorous maxim ![]() Anyways 5-2-1 feels right to me as a ranking methodology, a good alternative to ranking by golds. Ranking by total medal count is the dumbest thing though.
