because it sorts by Gold > Silver > Bronze - you have more silvers, but total we have 27 to your 24

imo gold count is the most important. We're tied in gold.

i.e. sorting by the way everybody sorts we're ahead, but sorting by a tricksy way Americans use to look better you beat us.

I'm curious what people on TL think about medal rankings (if anyone even cares, maybe it's just 'Murican thing).
So far Norway has most golds with 10, and USA most total medals with 25.
IMO gold is the most important consideration, with total medals considered in the event of a gold tie. In my mind, the current ranking would be:

1. Norway 10G 4S 7B
2. USA 8G 6S 11B
3. Germany 8G 4S 4B

Edit: Apparently that is the same way the actual Sochi Olympics site does it: http://www.sochi2014.com/en
NBC and ESPN rank by total medals, and BBC goes by the same as the official site.

Pretty much, US goes by totals, the world goes by gold.

Obviously gold count is the most important. But after that, I like to look at totals. Being on the podium at all is impressive and astounding, so getting 27 on the podium over 24 is respectable.

Should be a point system. Gold = 3, silver = 2, bronze = 1.

IMO Gold = 5, Silver = 3, Bronze = 1 if you're going to do a points system.

With that it's Norway 70, Russia 82, Canada 80, USA 77.

I've met Kaitlyn Lawes (third for Team Canada), no doubt she was inspired to go to the Olympics by my presence, so I can take some credit.

Also the ex-coach of Germany's curling team once held me as a I vomited, so that has to count for something.

We had a thread on ranking gold/silver/bronzes (first/second/third places) in the context of SC before, this was years back (anyone wanna dig up that thread?), and there was a really good post by someone on how to look at the situation:

If you ask a competitor if they'd rather have a gold or two silvers, the vast majority will opt for the former. Therefore, any ranking system has to value a gold as more than 2x the value of a silver. So a 5-2-1 scoring system makes the most sense.

If that's the case then I'm pretty sure they'd rather have a silver than 2 bronze, and the bottom end of that spead falls through.

Solid reasoning.

That would make it

They'd probably rather have 1 bronze compared to 18 4th place finishes so you have to keep that in mind too.

Not true, actually. The silver-bronze difference is not nearly as pronounced as the gold-silver difference.

Indeed, there is a common Chinese quip (not sure if it's common in other countries as well?) that the happiest person on the podium is the bronze medalist - the bronze medalist is just happy to podium, whiel the silver medalist can only think about how he/she could've potentially gotten gold.

Edit: I guess it's not limited to China, since it appears to have originated in a 1995 study. http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/psp/69/4/603/

This only compared bronze and silver, the bronze medalist isn't happier than the gold (or at least they weren't checking for that, but it would be very surprising).

It wasn't a part of the study of course, but one rationale behind that is the gold medalist often is a favorite/expected to win and crush the competition, so it's more of us "just as expected" scenario whereas the bronze medalist had to overcome, often, a lot of close competitors to grab that spot in a "pleasant surprise" scenario.

And besides, it's a quip, which inherently implies it's not some rigorous maxim

Anyways 5-2-1 feels right to me as a ranking methodology, a good alternative to ranking by golds. Ranking by total medal count is the dumbest thing though.

^_^ We should just value having winners at all, who cares about what nation got gold or silver or bronze so long as they got something and the competitors did the best they could you can't ask for much more in my opinion.
