It's funny seeing the list of votes, and it's obvious there's really only a few assholes who try to mess with it (start generally has like 5 votes), and it's fun watching the votes try and deal with the delay

We "read" Les Misérables in French classes, that is to say we received a very condensed (~400 pages?) version that contained only narrative chapters (not all of them, and no commenting/critiquing ones). Not sure what was the point apart from making us read a "classic", but then again I guess they didn't believe 15/16 year olds would take an interest in social commentary (Cheep gonna say they're right or something if I profess I hated Suskind's Perfume a year later). I should finish the Count of Monte-Cristo, read a bit more than half then I moved so I was away from the library and I never bothered to check if the one in my new town had the same edition (it doesn't, but as long as it has a complete one I could work around it), I remember a diner scene near the beginning where well-off people discuss Napoleon being vanquished and how fortunes are undone and people are going to see their true allegiances revealed, this kind of post-conflict thing; was pretty interesting (and petty too, burns everywhere but only on those not present). Then there's Faria and the whole willing suspension of disbelief being pressured hard. ![]() Wow so many mistakes in this post. We had to read the Odyssey in 9th grade. By the Odyssey, I mean a ten page highlight reel of the odyssey, that somehow crammed the lotus eaters, Polyphemus, Circe, Scylla & Charybdis, and Odysseus's return home into about 2 pages each. It was pointless and dull.

edit: I took 6 years of Latin in middle/high school, so I got many tastes of Homer's writings, as well as many other historians' writings. Most of it I found pretty interesting, just hated doing the school work associated with it.

Ancient warfare is the best and most fun, firearms really changed warfare and not for the better. Fuck gunpowder.

Battle was far more skill intensive and impressive when it was all hand to hand. Archery was also an incredible skill set (although back then it was also considered somewhat cowardly to not face your enemy head on). I find history interesting in general, but I'm bad at remembering dates or places or names, so studying more recent history doesn't do all that much for me.
