We "read" Les Misérables in French classes, that is to say we received a very condensed (~400 pages?) version that contained only narrative chapters (not all of them, and no commenting/critiquing ones). I should finish the Count of Monte-Cristo, read a bit more than half then I moved so I was away from the library and I never bothered to check if the one in my new town had the same edition (it doesn't, but as long as it has a complete one I could work around it), I remember a diner scene near the beginning where well-off people discuss Napoleon being vanquished and how fortunes are undone and people are going to see their true allegiances revealed, this kind of post-conflict thing; was pretty interesting (and petty too, burns everywhere but only on those not present). Then there's Faria and the whole willing suspension of disbelief being pressured hard.

edit: I took 6 years of Latin in middle/high school, so I got many tastes of Homer's writings, as well as many other historians' writings. Most of it I found pretty interesting, just hated doing the school work associated with it.
