Finding your dream SO in KPOP is also the same exact thing as girls wishing they could marry Bieber.
Having a sense of connection to a KPOP star is the same exact thing... etc.
The difference being the Bieber fandom is mostly in teen girls and they tend to grow out of it. Kpop has a very large grown men population.
So I mean yeah, you admitted that it's a bit hypocritical so w.e. It's not something that interests me but I respect that it's important to some people.
Well like I said, it's part of the idol culture. Whilst Bieber is just a singer (if you can call him that, 90% of kpop idols are twice as talented, easily), he's shown to be a giant douche in nearly every way to his fans and the world at large. Idols are "designed" to be the opposite. Whether it's training or just a facade their paid to play, the fact that idols genuinely seem like good people is a big difference.
Also, like I said, most western entertainers are just singers and nothing else. Idols specifically go onto shows, do web promotions like Crayon Pop TV or Reality of Ladies Code, or use social media to extend beyond that. It strikes me as weird when girls obsess over Bieber because the only place they know him is through his "music", whilst idols make an image for themselves that is connected to, but not entirely comprised of, their musical career.
It's like, hm, look at Riot. Not only do they make a great game, but they have personalities and connect with the community. That extra mile, that forward facing image is the thing that makes them more than a game company, and an organization that is really something more.
Yeah, I'm with Wave and Shake, I'm sorry I dont get KPop.
I just dont get it. I dunno, I think a bunch of grown men idolizing and following a bunch of girls that look like teenagers is creepy. It weird me out because I wouldn't want some random grown man idolizing my teen sister, cousin, niece, daughter etc because that is just not right in pretty well any modern culture.
I don't follow enough to say confidently, but from what I've seen he appreciates his fans - or at least puts up a persona that shows he cares for his fans. He also does interviews and his entire brand is built off of social media (picked up off of a Youtube video, biggest Twitter in the world etc.)
I mean he might be less interactive, largely due to the fact that he is MUCH more popular, but it's still pretty much the same thing lol.
Like you obviously don't like Bieber so you're grasping at straws to find differences when they're very similar.

1. Most of the girls in these groups are more in the age range of 19-25. I'm not creeping on 12 year old girls, these are women who are within the age range I'd consider dating on my own.
2. It's not "following girls that look like teenagers". I like the music, they have personalities that are entertaining as any actor, comedian, or talkshow host. I don't follow them with the intention of "hey hot girls better stalk", they entertain me (as they are paid to do) so I'm entertained by them. It's not that hard to imagine, it wouldn't be creepy to buy a book by someone who is paid to write just because they're a hot woman.

In fact I think that teenage girls being all "BEIEBR I WANT YOUR BABIES!" is creepy too. And at the end of the day it is just wasting your time and killing your happiness. If you judge all relationship / potential partners on how similar they are to some fabricated idolized thing you see in a magazine that is created specifically for the feels you'll never find something that will make you happy, because nothing is ever as good as some fantasy character that has been fabricated specifically for your needs.

But they're teenage girls, you expect that. I was starting middle school when the Bieber craze started and girls were crazy over him, now I'm last year of high school and I haven't heard a single thing about Bieber from senior girls. They grow out of it.

Yeah, he's actually a scumbag. He once went to do an appearance at a hospital and didn't talk to any of his fans or let them near him because he decided that they creeped him out. He's had pictures taken of him spitting at fans. He's also at several points decided that he didn't want to perform for 3 hours and let his fans sit in the audience until they left.
There's never been an idol that was half that shitty towards fans.

Obviously relationships are never going to measure up to a fantasy, but that's like saying "don't play games or read books because real life will never live up to the excitement and adventure that you read there". It's fantasy, entertainment. I realize that. I can enjoy it without turning my life inside out.
Bieber is a huge scrub. He sits at the NBA finals, doesn't watch, just sits there playing Candy Crush, and I bet he's not even good at it. His music early on wasn't bad, but now he's trying to act all tough and stuff. Unfortunately, he's just a spoiled white kid who let fame go to his head, and we already have Eminem and Macklemore, or even Mike Shinoda.
I enjoy some Kpop music (and the part about the voice as an instrument is a very valid point, just not so much in pure pop songs, ballads, raps etc. yes), but I can't get into the whole culture/industry which is so artificial. I mean, fake it till you make it is true, but it still freaks me out.
I've known a couple girls that have been prettier and more personable than any Kpop star I've seen (admittedly not a large number), and that's already enough for me. Maybe one day I'll find another. Ah crap, now I'm going to bed depressed.

Mmm, I dont know if it is quite the same thing. Me playing LoL for example does not set me up to be unhappy in my every day life at all. Same with DnD, or a book, or a sporting event.
I'd say it is similar maybe to like a WoW, but even then there are hundreds of studies saying WoW very bad for you. Thing is being attatched to an idol like this has a way of breaking that 3rd person barrier and creating standards that maybe aren't realistic.

Fair enough. And I never said that people did expect their KPOP heroes to fall in love with them and sweep them off their feet or something, just that when you idolize someone and say "You know what, they the ideal woman" it screws with your standards. It distracts you from makes you happy and that can sometimes really suck.
I dunno, no one is hardwired such that a girlfriend with a stock fake personality and good looks to whatever standard makes them happy, it is intimacy that makes them happy, and I'm not saying that it is the case for everyone, but for a lot of people who over-idolize think that that needs to come from someone who lives up to a physical set of standards, when really you just need someone who you appreciate, and who appreciates you.

To me there's a pretty clear distinction between superheroes and kpop. Superheroes? Never going to happen at all, and we know that so we can really indulge. Kpop? Close enough to reality, but still all made up. The way it skirts that line between fiction and reality is kind of unhealthy IMO, give an entire generation of kpop fans unrealistic ideas about girls and stuff.
