To me there's a pretty clear distinction between superheroes and kpop. Superheroes? Never going to happen at all, and we know that so we can really indulge. Kpop? Close enough to reality, but still all made up. The way it skirts that line between fiction and reality is kind of unhealthy IMO, give an entire generation of kpop fans unrealistic ideas about girls and stuff. Then again, same thing can be said about my obsession with da feelz and all the sappy music/movies/books I read-- I've got a pretty raging sense of chivalry and all that.
Anyone listen to any nightcore? A lot of people say it sounds like chipmunks (it kind of does), but its the closest I think I'll ever get to drugs. Batman could be real, it's not like he has "super" powers.

Haha, I used to listen to nightcore in middle school. Was obsessed with Tune-up! and stuff, now I kinda just cringe at it. It's so generic but meh, fun to listen to from time to time.

Batman's armor, flysuit and the batmobile are pretty unreal. To be perfectly honest, I'd say CSI Miami has a larger chance of having the possibility of being real than Batman does.
"raging sense of chivalry" has to be the best name for a boner I've ever heard

i can singlehandedly ruin muse for you guys pls don't click spoiler if you ever want to listen to them seriously again
+ Show Spoiler +matt *GASP* bellamy *GASP* gasping *GASP* between every *GASP* sung line *GASP* it has to be the most obnoxious thing once you hear it the first time, because you can no longer actually focus on the music at all. i used to be a pretty big muse fan but i can't even take them seriously any more, most distracting thing ever
edit: holy shit, i just went back and listened to KoC and in the scaling keyboard part at about 3:30 or whatever, when matt starts singing over it... oh my god i am CRACKING UP. it's like they build these epic albums and never bothered to pay for a producer

I've noticed it, but he's an incredible vocalist and their music is amazing.
By far the best live show I've ever seen.

Just weighing in on the music discussion:
Deftones are the best. Like 15 years and still not a terrible album. SO CONSISTENT.

fucking fuck i had like 12 paragraphs written and accidentally lost it. fml
Alright look. I'll lay this out as best I can.
First let's start with music. There's plenty of variation in kpop that pretty much anyone can find something they like. Regular pop, electronica stuff, acoustic, ballads, trot, hip-hop, etc. You can easily find a group with a musical sound that you like if you look hard enough.
Having it be in a different language also creates an interesting situation. Vocals become more of an instrument than they are in songs you understand, creating variable sounds and tonality, especially when you get multiple girls/guys in a group with their own voices and singing styles. You really feel the flow of the lyrics and how they mesh with the song, rather than just listening to the words. I get this a lot with RHCP, who often have just nonsense lyrics that sound good without requiring thought to enjoy.
Looking at the "basic" cutesy kpop (things like Gee, Bubble Pop, and Bar Bar Bar), you get feel-good music with a good beat and a lighthearted sound that is easy to enjoy. Something you can listen to in basically any mood and enjoy, something that you can put on in the background and just jam too without too much investment. It becomes fantastic work/gaming music, next to House or Trance stuff that some people like.
Alright, onto the messy bit. The idol industry is a tricky situation. On one hand, I know how it looks. I hate the Hollywood gossip scene and Bieber bullshit as much as anyone. I also know how people view most Otakus (body pillow loving, sweaty shut ins). And I know kpoppers generally give off the same vibe, so I know that it makes me somewhat hypocritical and I understand why it's kind of a turn off for people.
But it's different in a lot of ways. The idol industry is designed, not sought out. While people dig around for the latest dating rumors from Hollywood and stalk actors, the idol world provides a source for people who like that sort of thing without relying on rumors and creepy magazines/shows like TMZ.
The way idols work is that they're molded, shaped for the enjoyment of the fans. This creates depth to the groups you follow. You don't just like their music, you enjoy seeing them between promotions and albums. You feel a sense of connection to your favorite groups and performers when you see them on shows. You get excited when they mention being in a photoshoot or that they're going to be at an event like throwing the first pitch at a game. Now they're not just people that make the music you like, they're people that you can live vicariously through and watch as they grow. It's especially great when you see the premier of a group and watch them rise from rookie status to stardom.
And of course, the community is (for the most part) also awesome. KMD was amazing until everyone started hating each other individually, Reddit is a bit sheep-y (as Reddit tends to be), but people are nice and link new stuff and spazz together. Most fangroups are supportive of each other and do get togethers for concerts and what not.
As for why people get into it, well, the reasons are as varied as anything else. Some fools (like wei) are in it for physical reasons, watching cute girls/guys in well-cut outfits perform dances that range from super cute to damn sexy.
Others are romantics, looking for the perfect man/woman. With the idol pool as large as it is, it's easy to find a personality that you like and follow them. You know you'll never meet them and live happily ever after, but for those that love to fantasize and dream about their ideal SO, the persona that fits the things they look for in another individual, it's a much better place to do so than anywhere this side of fanfiction. And much less creepy, depending on where you read your fanfic.
Of course, it depends on the person too. Some people just have obsessive personalities and this is a great outlet. I can follow a group without putting forth too much effort. I D/L the new single when it comes out thanks to great fansites, flip on over to Reddit or Tumblr for some new pics and news, and when I can't sleep I just pop on a stream of a Music Show that's going on over in Korea and see my girls perform their latest hit.
So yeah. It varies from person to person but there's a lot in the industry that is literally created for entertainment purposes. They provide a clean, fun outlet for people who like different types of music and want more from their performers than an album every year or so. There's a variety of idols and styles that appeal to men and women of all slices of life, and even if don't understand the music or culture, you can enjoy the community, sights, and sounds.
When I went to Korus in Virginia to see Hello Venus, I saw people from all around the country (and I think a couple people from Korea) who came together and went crazy to see 6 girls perform their music. HV was amazing in person, they had fun with the crowd instead of just performing and leaving, they played for cameras and really just were great entertainers as well as simply performers. Dudes up to 30 were spazzing out next to high school girls and we were just loving it because a group that we like the music for and the personalities of (manufactured or not) were everything we expected and more.
Hopefully any of this made sense.

I enjoy the music and they have personalities that I like, especially when they go on fun shows like Idol Olympics.
I enjoy Craig Ferguson's late night show. I often watch clips of him on the internet and record new episodes on my DVR, and have watched his stand up. He has a really funny personality and entertains me a lot.
I like Lilypichu. I follow her on Twitter, on Youtube, and on Tumblr. She makes me laugh with her videos and I think she's cute. I often visit her pages multiple times a day to check for updates.
I like SNSD. Their music is great and the girls have fun personalities and I think they're cute. I often listen to their music and visit sites that have clips of them on talkshows. I'm subscribed to their subreddit, /r/snsd
Is the third and final one so much significantly creepier?

I mean, I know you pointed this out, but I still don't see a difference between this and people obsessing over Jbiebs. People coming together from all over the world for a concert is not unique to KPOP, even though the community might seem more tightly knit.
Finding your dream SO in KPOP is also the same exact thing as girls wishing they could marry Bieber.
Having a sense of connection to a KPOP star is the same exact thing... etc.
The difference being the Bieber fandom is mostly in teen girls and they tend to grow out of it. Kpop has a very large grown men population.
So I mean yeah, you admitted that it's a bit hypocritical so w.e. It's not something that interests me but I respect that it's important to some people.
