It's bracket luck. Last year's results was an outlier, HerOMarine was on the run of his life.

Well, the expected number is 2. Last year Heromarine overperformed. This year Serral underperformed. It's pretty basic variance.

Last year we had 3 foreigners getting out of the group stage, this year 4.

Reynor is the last player remaining in the tournament with a chance to tie that record.
But one trophy by Reynor is still questionable, right even it is legit? Because the whole tournament was conducted during the online era.
I personally consider it half a world championship because it was online. Not a knock on Reynor, he played so well and is clearly capable of winning an offline world championship, but there will always be that asterik on that win.
Ehh, hasn't Reynor also been a finalist at the last three world championships? I get the sentiment with the online component, but that win was well-deserved considering who he played
Being a finalist doesn't count for much in SC2's GOAT conversations.
Yeah, otherwise Soo's accomplishment in Code S GSL or Zest's accomplishment in Katowice can be counted as well..

Unlike when discussing Protoss performance, in which case it is worth as much as winning.

I feel like consistent semis/finals placements should be valued more highly in GOAT conversations, but for better or worse people mainly care about wins.

Maru also gains a TON if we start weighing silvers more. I mean just look at last year alone: Maru
He took 5 premier Silvers to go along with the 3 golds.
He has 3 or 4 GSL Silvers to go along with his 5 golds when soO's record is 6.

Serral underperformed in ZvZ matchup only. But, his ZvP and ZvT looked stellar as before.

Having watched that tournament run, I don't want to give him an asterisk for that trophy but I can understand why others might.
The IEM Katowice 2021 championship run by Reynor is as legit as an offline one imho. Shouldn't be discredited just because it took place during COVID times. He had a gauntlet slew of opponents - Stats, Dark, Maru and Zest - players on all sides had ping and latency issues and mishaps.

Reynor has dodged ZvZ all tournament thanks to bracket luck. It's not fair to say he looks better than Serral does when Serral only looked shaky in one match up.

I think the GG was fine, plus as RagnaroK said, the Larva issue was huge for him as he over invested in drones?
At the time he shakes his head he is down 3 army supply.
If he retreats with the 4 roaches he has on top of the ramp in his nat and wait for reinforcements + a temporary drone pull he holds it off somewhat easily (although the economy difference will be evened out somewhat).
At the exact time he GG*ed, yeh it was pretty tough but he given up doing anything 5 seconds prior.
He was down 3 army supply while 20 of his army supply were in production, i.e. dead.
No that's why you retreat further back and then pull drones. You just need to win a few seconds there. Most of them were just about to pop out. Serral not even attempting to retreat indicated he wasn't aware just how much he had in production.
There is almost zero chance he doesn't survive that engagement if he does that.
I see him shaking his head at 2:51:14 in the vod. He has 42 army supply of which 26 are not on the field, 6 queens and his last couple of roaches are surrounded. He has nothing to retreat with.
Please use the ingame clock instead. At 7:47, he should retreat with the 5 roaches at his natural and the other roach at the 3rd back to the 3rd. He needs to wait only a few seconds, then pull drones and the combined forces of his reinforcements and drones will easily overrun Ragnarok there.
if ragnarok then follows him into the natural, Serral most likely wins the game shortly afterwards as he can flank him with drones from 3rd and all incoming reinforcements and crush the army very efficiently.
If on the other hand Ragnarok turns towards Serrals 3rd it will be a lot more tricky as Serral will lose a lot of drones. But still most likely the game will continue for some time.

I don't think people are discrediting the run itself but moreso the very idea that you could have a World Championship in just about anything played online - because the offline/online difference is very real much beyond just inevitable cross server issues.
Wasn't it Lambo saying that nobody in Europe was practicing ZvZ these days and that Serral laughed at him when he asked him to play?
Isn’t that the only matchup you would need to practice though? Seems weird not to practice it when there are more zergs than every other race in the ro8
