sOs is not even close to Mvp.

Nah, they are at least close, on point sOs was the best HOTS player and maybe the best protoss overall. 3 world championship, 1 korean championship and 3 silver in korean tournaments is at least close to 4 GSL, 1 GSL silver, 1 MLG, 1 WCS EU and a Blizzcon with just one other korean.
Both player are in my top 5 personally

You are forgetting one IEM and one WCG on Mvp's side.

WCG was pretty much an AsianGame situation I don't think beating Kas, Bling and Xigua is particularly impressive even late 2011 and sOs MSI (almost flawless) run was more impressive than Mvp IEM Cologne.

Let's rephrase it: sOs achievemenents are impressive as almost all of his victories were super prestigious , but Mvp is clearly above in my opinion as he won way more in Korea and also collected more international titles. He was clearly the best player in 2011 despite it also being the best year of Nestea, MC and MMA. And I'm not even summoning Stuchiu.
Not being impressed with some victories doesn't mean they can be taken out completely; also, Kas-Bling-Xigua wasn't a joke back in the days despite not being a truly glorious path.

Was sOs ever the undisputed "best player in the world?" Because I don't remember him ever being an overwhelming favorite even in the tournaments he won.

I think it's close between Mvp and sOs but Mvp is the greatest WoL player while sOs is one of the greatest HotS players and a great LotV player. I voted MvP because he won so many more tournaments (along with multiple GSLs unlike Taeja).
Also, I do think the depth of competition matters so that's why I voted Stats over MC even though MC won more tournaments but in the case of Mvp and sOs, Mvp has a lot more wins, and many of them were very prestigious.

Well done!
Hope this contest gets some front page love for the final eight

Zergs with the bracket luck. Good chance there won't be any protoss in the top 4...

Replace Nestea with Life and you have a pretty perfect top 8

This aren't the top 8 greatest players. Bracket luck plays too big of a role

Assuming Life is banned, the only name you could possibly switch is Zest with your Protoss of choice/Solar. Solar has like 4 or 5 premiers, somehow, right? Or I guess MMA. I personally think that Classic should be up there but he ran into Innovation. the order of my protoss:
Classic: second best lotv toss behind stats, had a strong late hots, especially in Proleague sOs: has the titles, has been a threat for a long time, very innovative. Parting: Even though MC has more early titles, Parting had a nice longevity, and Soul Train is STILL relevant and it's my favorite protoss build to watch and play. Zest: Really beastly in 2014. he's really disappointing and really poo now. hero is currently a bigger threat. hero: had a bad start and end to his career, bookending a bunch of poo IEMs and high profile losses MC: I know, 2 GSLs when toss sucked. nothing else truly special.
I'd take Classic or sOs over solar or MMA, to replace Zest

Exactly my point and why this "top 8" shouldn't be taken as a top 8 greatest player list. If any of the other players would have run into Inno/Maru they wouldn't be top 8 either.

Classic is definitely not a top 8 player rofl Maybe you can put sOs there but definitely not classic.
Classic might not even be top 5 protoss. Rain, Stats, Hero, MC, and Parting might all be above him.
