Neeb & Leenock for hype.

Rogue & TY for reality.

I don't see much of a world where these matches aren't one-sided. Two arguably top 5 LotV players vs two guys most didn't expect to even make ro16. But TY can always throw a 2-0 lead and Rogue can always randomly play like shit, so maybe.
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

I think TY has to beat Leenock, Rogue vs Neeb is closer than people think. If Rogue just plays macro games Neeb will have a good shot, if he throws in some cheese then Neeb might be in trouble.

Neeb beat Rogue offline in china not long ago, they traded series at Blizzcon, Aligulac only gives Rogue a slight edge. Rogue is the favourite but it is a possible Neeb could win.

(P)Neeb 1-3 (Z)Rogue
(Z)Leenock 1-3 (T)TY

Neeb will probably get at least 1 map. I was pulling for Leenock but with news of him being in the hospital idk. Even if he wasn't hospitalized, I figured he'd have a tough time. TY has been my darkhorse to win this season since the ro16, he's in very good shape.

Rogue will cheese every game and get a clean 3-0. no reason to risk macro games when your opponent has such a glaring weakness against cheese. I'd love to eat my words but neeb has really not been amazing recently.

Neeb is the only foreigner in LotV to have taken multiple matches off of Rogue (he's lost matches here and there as well as maps, but none more than to Neeb). Rogue is 9-7 against Neeb and 3-3 in matches. If there's any foreigner aside from Serral who can give Rogue trouble, it's Neeb.

And Leenock...well he almost won against Maru. Don't know how he'll do now.

Also, in what world does Neeb not win against aLive and Losira?

This is gsl ro8 not a weekend tournament. Rogue's preparation outclasses that of Neeb.

Neeb 0 - 3 Rogue
Leenock 2 - 3 TY

Assuming that Leenock plays. Bummer that Jaedong's KSL series is at the same time as this.

In online matches or even weekend tournaments I could see Neeb win but I think Rogue will prepare heavily for this which makes him hugely favored.

If Leenock is out, any chance they can bring Stats and Zest instead of a DQ?

It's theoretically possible, but it seems a bit unfair to cut down so much on their practice time on such short notice.

You guys forget that Rogue is the best lategame Zerg out there.
Still think Neeb can beat him there.

Ether way,
Neeb 3-1 Rogue
Leenock 1-3 TY

Neeb has not lost PvZ's lately at all (he did lose 0-3 to Scarlett in MC S3 but then sweeped her 4-0 in WCS NA Challenger, so 4-3 which is still a win overall in my book), so I think he got this against Rogue.
If TY doesn't win against Leenock now when Leenock has health issues than TY just sucks balls.
No offense Leenock, but TY would be favored against you even if you didn't have health issues

Rogue wasn't good when they played at kespa cup. Neeb did beat him 2-1 at blizzcon but then went 0-4 against soO and Rogue right after. It seems Rogue realised if you don't let protoss get the best army in the game then you might win.

As far as leenock almost beating Maru, so did Zanster and Reynor. It may not mean as much as people think.

I think it means that Maru isn't invincible in TvZ.

Right, which is why most people are thinking Rogue cheeses Neeb or does some weird midgame push with like swarmhosts or something. Though to that lategame point, Rogue had gone lategame with Stats and won.

But that's why some people are saying if Neeb can make it to the late game, he has a chance.

Thing is, Maru in group stages is never invincible at anything. People doubted him in season one because he almost lost to Keen, and in season two because he almost lost to Patience and Zanster. Yet when he gets to the ro4/finals etc his play becomes almost flawless in comparison.

No its just that group stage games dont mean as much as 5 game and 7 game bracket series. Once you take this into account theres much more clarity on who the best players are.

By the way neeb beat scarlett in a series with no implications on 150ms. He lost to her on a very meaningful match at a LAN.

No they do not. And Fango specifically mentioned Maru and that he had looked not so solid against Patience and Zanster but went on to defeat Classic and Rogue the best in their races respectively. Which other terran have you seen get to Ro4 and above with this consistency?

On another note if you watch the games themselves there is a world of a difference in Maru's play and his victories in playoffs which is because of overall a lot stronger solid play, BoX planning mixing in/faking cheese, reacting to him getting cheesed etc. In comparison his play in the group stages almost looks like he freestyles and makes decisions on the fly.

He almost lost to leenock because:

Game 1: He killed leenock straight up with his 2-1-1 2 Tank timing
Game 2: He stubbornly did the exact same build game 2 which leenock shut down and won in the lategame
Game 3: Leenock went for roach ravagers which Maru probably did not scout early enough and barely defended with Leenock making some mistakes as well

That was the sequence of events and thus Maru's not invincible for sure but thats the level of his dominance that we have to nitpick the manner in which hes winning.
The Terran Prince is now the king. Maru | MMA | Mvp forever

No he's not, Rogue has never beaten Neeb if the game goes past the mid game. He only beats Neeb by cheesing or all-ins.

If Rouge beats Neeb here would this be his first time in the GSL semifinals? Kinda crazy with all the success he's had over the past few years that he has yet to beat that curse.

Ah you're right, Reynor and Zanster are almost as good as Maru because they almost beat him.
Patience is much better than Zest because he put up much more of a fight against Maru.
Leenock is a much better lategame player than Maru because he beat him in the one long game.
My bad, I should've realized that.

Don't see much hope for Neeb tbh, if rouge thinks he can't beat him in a macro game, he'll just cheese the hell out of Neeb. Thinking 3-1 for rouge. As for the other match, Hope Leenock's well enough to play vs TY. I kinda hope he'll win.

really hoping for ty.

the most tense thing in the game for me is when he is winning the first to maps in a BO5 convincingly ^^

as for neeb vs rouge, i have no strong opinion, i just hope for good games, so not rouge cheesing neeb in game 1 and he goes full tilt the next two maps (i.e. the dark maneuver)

I like Neeb and Rogue so I don’t mind who wins but I will send my luck to Neeb as it would be cool to have a foreigner in the final 4 again. If he could play Leenock after that he would have a realistic shot at getting to the finals too.

I think neeb is most likely going to go down to rogue, but I wouldn't count him out, his PvZ has always been his strongest matchup. As for TY vs Leenock, I gotta go with TY on this one. He's just too terrifying. I'd love to see Leenock win though, awesome dude

Standard fast expand openings- nothing crazy before the 2 minute mark.

Edit: Neeb opens oracle into phoenix, rogue going 2 base lair.

Could've also been 2base roach/SH, but wasn't either. Maybe Rogue misclicked and didn't make the building that would've made his strategy? I dunno. This is just not a build.

Does anyone remember when Dark did a build like this and went 2 base roach hydra and it won and looked sick and super interesting? I think it was in SSL sometime in 2016 and it was a Bo7.

This kind of failed miserably but Rogue was completely unprepared for the adepts so that may have played a factor in the perceived weakness of this build.

At least for the first game, I really like Neeb's building placement at the front. It's specifically designed to defend against pressure.

"throwing" meant purposely losing the game before it ever meant losing from a winning position. i don't think he means rogue fixed the match (pls read this sentence carefully as im not implying anything on this sensitive topic), but you can certainly say that he threw the game away by choosing a worthless strategy

I think it was meant as a blind counter build to Zealot/Archon meta.

What Neeb went for was nearly a hard counter.

I don't think throw means what you think it does.

"throwing" meant purposely losing the game before it ever meant losing from a winning position. i don't think he means rogue fixed the match, but you can certainly say that he threw the game away by choosing a worthless strategy

by that definition, most games are throws

It doesn't counter charge/archon either. This 2 base roach thing outright loses to 2/3 standard builds in the PvZ meta. The third you just don't do against 2 base zerg.

Oh I absolutely agree. If I was a pro Zerg I'd be speedling/baneling pressuring Neeb in every game. Adept pressure is his bread and butter.

Amen. Losing four Drones to the initial Oracle in game one is unacceptable for someone who can play as well as Rogue has demonstrated that he's capable of.

Zest is bringing this double archon drop build back. It's actually strong. Usually you at least try to jump the spore at the third though.

Mutalisks didn't do anything or much, just killed a warp prism. Died to storm and archons. Why not a transition to hydra den instead of a spire?

I've been seeing DT drop coming back a bit recently and i think it's actually good again??? the timing in which the archons come is really strong and zergs aren't really used to the timings anymore.

Not really Rogue's fault. Neeb attacked right when he could've used the spire so he had to use his gas on ravagers to live. His plans just kinda got foiled and he ended up just ditching it and using it to kill the prism.

I think it's because he knew Neeb didn't already have a SG. That means he has a much bigger window for mutas if Neeb doesn't scout it (which would have been hard if Neeb wasn't going double WP and pressuring everywhere). Just turned out Rogue didn't expect it and had to make units instead of mutas

I like the decision making to go for the attack. Neeb knew that he was in trouble from a strategic perspective with archons and no other tech. He needed to make something happen, otherwise Rogue would have the economic advantage. By going for the big attack and and using multi-pronged harass, he put Rogue off tempo and made Rogue make roaches and delay eco.

In general, idm overlord speed vs Neeb cos if he's going a standard build, you are able to tell if he's going archon drop or 2SG phoenix. Neeb does both and it's impossible to scout these things when they go phoenix first.

Neeb actually had great economy the whole game cos Rogue opened overlord speed which isn't as good against DT drop because you're economy is worse PLUS you need to make tons of roaches to live. Just kind of a tough game for Rogue in general.

Also, im 100% sure Neeb planned to hit that timing attack from the beginning, i've been seeing it a lot with this small resurgence of DT drop in PvZ rn.

I could write a blog on why Butch's arc sucked ass compared to the rest ;o. In fact, I think the film would be better with parts of it cut out.

One nice thing I've noticed this series is Neeb really is looking like his old self. He's not going the same build every game, he's not leaving WP or phoenix or Oracles not moving a lot, and he's just overall controlling significantly better.

The completely out of place, stretched out cameo, put in just to make you feel a bit more empathy towards the cardboard character of Butch? No way.
That scene is very fucking far from Oklahoma.

To me, his entire story is just a very elaborate set up to have:
+ Show Spoiler [spoilers for 20 years old movie] +

1) Travolta be gunned down by Willis
2) The Zedd Basement scene

The character of Butch and his GF aren't nearly as captivating in their appearance as any other in the story. Fucking Tarantino's cameo where he keeps repeating the N word is better. Also the cab driver? The film is famous for its dialogues, but the cab drive sequence is just needlessly corn, as to set up the pace of the arc, but it just makes the entire story seem out of place in the context of the film. It just doesn't seem to add anything interesting to Pulp Fiction as a whole for the first 15 or so minutes of the arc. I also think that by stripping Marcelus of his menace, it kind of removes significance of him in other arcs (Vincent's and Jules'), instead of improving them. I hate Butch.

double SG phoenix is just as silly for PvZ as back when regular single SG phoenix was the meta. it's awkward bandage design - protoss needs to be able to do damage, so they find a way to do guaranteed sustained damage with almost no risk. im not saying it's OP for toss, because toss has to be able to kill drones, but the gameplay interaction of 14 phoenix mass murdering units while zerg makes nothing but drones and spores is simply stupid to watch and reductive of the whole matchup

Rogue is the favorite to reach ro8 of any GSL he plays. And not a step further.

I said earlier, and I've said this about every Zerg Neeb's faced in GSL. The fact they did not cheese Neeb out is exactly why they lost. Rogue played right into Neeb's strength. Maybe Rogue was overconfident in his abilities against Neeb's midgame/lategame toss

Nah. Neeb played really well. Rogue gave Neeb tempo. Exactly what Neeb wants in his PvZ as he's admitted himself. That's on Rogue's preparation and not his play for not trying to play to Neeb's weaknesses

I think people are missing the point, the level of play has overall gone down quite a bit, not up, despite what tastosis keep saying about this being the best whatever we've ever seen.

There was an archon shooting at a cluster of ovies near the end, and Rogue's supply at the end was like 105 max supply.

Nah. Muta isn't really cheesy. Just risky. Game 1 had potential if Rogue didn't decide 2 base zerg for 8 minutes was good.

Looked like zero preparation from Rogue. Neeb has this tiny moves he does in play and Rogue looked surprised by each one, terrible performance. I'm inclined to go back and read all those Rogue 3-0 predictions and have a laugh.

I don't know if the level of play has worsened but it looks like the Koreans are doing a lot worse against the foreigners compared to last year and perhaps even compared to 2016.

He beat prime Mvp in a bo5 only to get upset by Jjakji in the next round back in the day. Talk about a tragedy. He can't let the title get away like that

yes, and that is exactly the reason Neeb got into TOP4 GSL. Because 1 player played incredibly bad for some unknown reason. facepalm

seems like you're missing the point - pointing out that Rogue played poorly today does not equate implying anything about Neeb

Rogue has now been in 7 GSL Ro8's, and never reached the Ro4. He lost at this stage more often than soO lost GSL finals. Mental block confirmed?

Yeah. And I've watched since 2013 and foreigners have never looked better. Not only vs Korea, but in foreigner vs foreigner matches (which usually were a shitfest when foreigners were really bad.) That's why I don't believe the "level of play has dropped, foreigners are as bad as ever" narrative; it's easy to tell the difference in actual play, composure on stage, and preparation for matches.

I was really surprised that so many people were betting on rogue stomping. they are 7:7 in offline games and Neebs playstyle is great against someone like rogue. yes, rogue did not play well, but its because Neeb really disrupted his playstyle

yea Korea is getting worse, no team houses, no new players, no tournaments except GSL, no team leagues

and current players will soon have to do military service, I wonder how much longer until GSL shuts down, and what will Tastosis do?

I mean, that's literally what happened. But that's competition for you - players can't put on their A game every day.

I think Rogue might have been put off tempo from game number 1. It looked like he was trying to play around Neeb's style since the first game. Instead of going for Neeb's weakness, Rogue didn't do any damage early game and tried to go for the midgame.

Somehow I cannot stop laughing ... I guess Rogue did not try hard enough?

I said earlier, and I've said this about every Zerg Neeb's faced in GSL. The fact they did not cheese Neeb out is exactly why they lost. Rogue played right into Neeb's strength. Maybe Rogue was overconfident in his abilities against Neeb's midgame/lategame toss

Rogue played kind of "cheesy" this entire series tbh. Just not the cheese that Neeb is weak against.

Nah. Muta isn't really cheesy. Just risky. Game 1 had potential if Rogue didn't decide 2 base zerg for 8 minutes was good.

2 base lair is cheesy (and IMO not actually that bad but he got super BO countered).

Overlord speed is not cheesy but extremely uncommon and he also got a shitty BO matchup.

The last game I would say was a BO win but he not only lost but got crushed, and his followup is EXTREMELY uncommon.

Rogue played extremely weird basically every single game so there's no way you could call this a standard series. Anyway, I think people are being too hard on Rogue and people never discuss the most basic thing in sc2 which is that Rogue got a crap end of the build orders in 2 of the games he lost so ofc he didn't look too good.

Ha, I my predictions on Neeb vs Rogue were spot on

No luck in stracraft, build orders don't exist. BoN results are detrimental to a player's career.

prime Mvp was in 2011-2012, pretty sure TY didn't face him back then.

OT: Rogue lost to a phoenix opening, nothing else was going on and he was already considerably down in supply, if that doesn't show how bad the level shown was, I dunno what else does.

I never seen dominance play by Rogue during the last IEM Katowice which was very sharp play with pretty good vision, or perhaps during his battle against Maru in the last Ro8 GSL Season 2. I dont know if it was kind of underplay or inconsistency.

That's such a reductive way to look at that game. Rogue was clearly doing a hive rush (almost like his ZvT build that he did on on dreamcatcher in GSL vs the world), so ofc he would have no supply and be super weak to attacks. That says nothing about Rogue's level.

Whether Rogue's build is actually good is an entirely different discussion, it's clearly risky and flimsy but perhaps it has some merit that we don't know about.

I don't think Neeb can beat Gumi at all. Gumi seems to only gets credit for his TvT but he's quite good in TvP as well.

At this rate, maybe I can surpass my 6 consecutive wrong votes this season in liquibet.

yes, and that is exactly the reason Neeb got into TOP4 GSL. Because 1 player played incredibly bad for some unknown reason. facepalm

seems like you're missing the point - pointing out that Rogue played poorly today does not equate implying anything about Neeb

pretty sure you are the one missing the point here. A player does not get into top4 of GSL because 1 player played poorly on one given day lol. I have to echo the general sentiment that Neeb played fine and Rogue played badly. That's not a knock on Neeb, he's going to the ro4 and he earned it.

I feel like Stats and Zest would have a high chance of beating Neeb, to be honest. Neeb's offline PvP winrate this year has only been 53.19% (he lost a lot to ShoWTimE, to be fair). Unless Zest plays the way he did at GSL vs the World.

The last time these two met in GSL was in WoL. They played one of the best games of 2013 on Whirlwind.

I remember their WoL match. It was that ridiculous roach/hydra game on Whirlwind where Leenock got whooped and then switched to BL/Inf and patchzerged his way into a win.

Yeah, his play looked really weird. I don't know what was going on there. He's inconsistent, of course, but I can't remember the last time he looked that bad in the GSL. He really looked lost.

Not taking anything away from Neeb, though. He looked really good and he completely crushed Rogue. And part of Rogue looking so hopeless was Neeb's play, obviously.

That's one way of putting it. Another way is, Leenock played some of the greatest scrappy play ever and pulled off a sick tactical play to close the game. I still remember that BL bait with the burrowed infestors

Yes, I do see your point of Neeb being here for a sheer luck: easy bracket and conveniently out-of-shape opponents. And i respectfully disagree, because i don't support korean playerbase elitism.

Honestly, this run is pretty average for many GSLs. Reynor is really good and the other players are common players to beat in the ro32 and ro16. Most people don't get super hard groups of death in their GSL runs.

yes, and that is exactly the reason Neeb got into TOP4 GSL.

THat's exactly what i meant with my initial post, that all foreign haters will remember is not the incredible run by Neeb, but Rogue's "unfit" performance. Way to go!

"not calling that incredible" =/= calling that sheer luck. Neeb is obviously a very good player. But I'd say I found Serral's recent GSL vs the world far more impressive. Even Naniwa's runs left a stronger impression on me. Time will tell how that run will rank among foreign performances on Korean soil, but so far I'm not out of my mind.

Let's turn to TY now

He didnt show anything from his usual ZvP, he just sat there waiting to die... I just dont get it :/

These comments don't really make sense to me. Rogue looked the opposite of lost to me, why does no one ever actually discuss the actual builds that happened in the game and how they matched up against each other.

Rogue's undoing today was pretty simple, he played a very strategically interesting series with a lot of prepared builds and strategies. To me, this harkens back to how Rogue's original style which is very innovative but kind of risky and not as solid. He got bad build order matchups and basically none of his plans worked. Emphasis on the fact that his plans didn't work. Other zergs play more reactively, but Rogue had very specific plans for each game it seems. He lost obviously, but he didn't look lost, he was very decisive with his strategies but they didn't work. It's that simple. If you're playing a more strategic style of zerg and it doesn't pay off, it's always going to look like a beatdown, Rogue was never swimming in a huge economy in any of these games.

You can criticise Rogue's overall choice to play in this way today, and ofc in retrospect, it clearly wasn't correct. But he came in with a very specific gameplan and it failed. You can't really criticise these games as if they were long macro games with a bunch of game changing decisions within the game, these games were largely shaped by decisions outside the game.

Did anyone bash Solar when he went a weird mass overseer build vs mass phoenix against Zest. Sometimes you just choose the wrong approach and a bit of bad luck and you get crushed. Rogue is still good guys lol.

Ganzi beat me without stim. Ostojiy beat me with a nydus. Siphonn beat me with probes. Revival beat my sentry-immortal all-in.

Interesting that one half of this season's bracket is all GSL champions and the other half is top players who have never won a GSL.

It was hopeless, even if TY didn't just kill him with that 3 tank attack, Leenock never had good enough position on the map to drone or tech.

I think that TY is locked for Blizzcon. No one below top 8 could take his spot even if they won super tournament.

Dark is basically locked too unless he flops super tournament and Trap or sOs wins the whole tournament.

Dark is at 4800 points. Trap is at 3300. To even tie Dark, Trap has to win the whole tournament and hope for Dark to not qualify.

Even if it's very unlikely, I think that Neeb winning GSL + Gumiho doing well in GSL and ST + Dark doing poorly in ST is more likely than Dark not even qualifying for ST.

What in the fuck was that Rogue series. I don't understand what he was even trying to do in half those games. Neeb played solid and I don't want to take anything away from him, but that was shocking.

Now I don't believe Rogue would intentionally throw, and I'm not accusing him of it. But that would have been a bad attempt at throwing.
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

and current players will soon have to do military service, I wonder how much longer until GSL shuts down, and what will Tastosis do?

Looking at the players he's faced though, you have to say, if he doesn't get past Neeb, what will it take him to get top 4?

I'm glad to see everyone agrees Rouge played bad. Artosis was giving him way too much credit. Neeb played great though, and with a lot of confidence. I loved the gold base in his last game.

Rooting for Rogue in RO8 is like rooting for the Titanic in the movie. Sure, not a bad cause, but you know the ship sinks no matter how big will be the iceberg.

There you go

Artosis overhypes, but when someone says he's doing it he's offended like no one else. True celebrity

I don't have a problem with him overhyping as long as he doesn't say outrageously wrong things.

Uhm, we have to define the terms.
For me:
hype - hyping things so people watch it(e.g. this is the best ro32 we had - they can't say - it's shitty so much even foreigners can get inside now, not professionally)
overhype - saying dumb things while trying to hype something - e.g. the game's not over, BuyN micro (tm)

So I don't mind him hyping things, I actually expect them to do that, they're doing it all the time. I mind doing them the overhype thing.

As excited as I am for Neeb, the fact that Rogue didn't play well really disappoints me. I don't want to say Neeb got lucky or anything because obviously he's great and has to be to make it this far, but I feel like Rogue didn't give us the series we needed to make it truly amazing. Just one player not playing his game while the other one was, not sure what happened.

As the owner of the Neeb and Rogue fan clubs, idk, not feeling it like I should be. It's great but it's great with an asterisk. I am a natural pessimist though so maybe this is just me

It's not just you. This season feels really weird, and this day in particular felt like two walkovers that should have been good matches. If Maru is genuinely slumping also, it's only gonna get weirder.

Yeah I thought Rogue looked terrible. I'm still a fan of his, I think his play during the run up to Blizzcon and in winning the tournament was about the best I've seen from Zerg in terms of whole game from early to late, I think he, and Dark, have shown a path to viable Zerg lategame against Terran and Protoss that we haven't seen before.

Neeb played really well, he was tight and on his game the way you'd expect of a quarterfinalist in Code S GSL. Rogue's game just looked bad, not Code S level. He took major damage against totally routine pressures in the early game that set him way behind and determined the outcome of most of the games.

Leenock didn't look great either but that level of play is about what I'd expect for him, he really overperformed in the earlier rounds to get there and returned to form in my opinion.

i am thrilled that evil rogue who robbed soo of his best change at redemption (winning blizcon last year) got stomped by neeb. but no way neeb beats TY ...??????? but if he does he has totally overtaken serral. but after that, there is NO way neeb could possibly beat maru who is on fire. no way nope not gonna happen. it'll be as one sided as gumigod vs maru

Although PvT is his weakest matchup, you just can't count out a player the caliber of Neeb. I will grant that TY and Maru are both certainly favored over him, but never say never.
