Reynor came 35 minutes early with his team, setting up his computer and taking selfies. sOs just walked in and waves at them. Reynor has the biggest smile ever on his face. He is so happy to be here.

I am too, and I'm just watching.

Clasic walks in, confidently and business-like, as though he knows he can get this done. He's happy to be here too, I guess.

On another note I hope they do something different for GSL vs the world.

Oooh GSL specific map. These usually end up being good but we'll never see it

Nice to see that GSL once again follows in LRSL's foosteps by including Atlas.

Tho the HotS version was prettier!

(Wiki)Atlas

the "new" map is actually just a reskinned version of this one from 5 years ago - no idea why they randomly brought it back...

They probably saw the LRSL games on LotV version of Sacred Sands. It is a great map.

That weird engage outside of a base, trying to focus down queens should have tipped him off that something was happening. Not necessarily mass phoenix, but that should have made warning bells start ringing

Classic is just too good and honestly don't think anyone expected Reynor to beat him, or to even advance this group. It might be good enought to defeat Ryung

This seems like a weird build to do on a map with a backdoor. Usually the stalker/zealot get a quick cancel on a low ground CC but here Ryung just walled on the highground

Frustrating loss for Ryung, he wanted to make reactor cyclones for so long but the adept shade meant he couldn't lift the barracks.

Building two helions there was a mistake.

That first build, the proxy gateway, was the only one thay gave Maru trouble when Zest used it. I'll bet we'll be seeing a lot of that.

i luv how critical micro moves by even the simplest units like stalkers, zealots and probes can make a huge difference in any battle.

It's a little know fact that sOs is the son of a rock paperscissors champion who married a magician. Stuff comes out of nowhere.

true, but the interactions could be gimmicky and boring if the units are poorly designed.

He was kinda behind at points but just counterattacked with lings and swung the game massively in his favour. Once the game went longer I don't think he was gonna lose.

Reynor does the things zergs should do. The constant counterattacks made it so he couldn't lose the game. The mass amount of lurkers was disgusting. And remembering to use the corruptor anti-building bs won the game in the end

In the end, Classic's PvZ comes to bite him in the ass. But Reynor, what a stud this kid is. At 16 freakin' years old. Imagine how good he'll be a few years down the line.

And Jesus, Reynor practiced with Neeb and Stats. Two of the best practice partners you can have to prepare for someone like Classic.

Does it not work in sc2? I've never seen it but I've never seen someone try it either

If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. If Classic wants to be talked about in the same vein as Maru, he’ll have to take his game to another level this season. Last season, we saw how he adapted to nemesis Dark as he ousted him from Code S in a very satisfying revenge game. But does he have the resolve to keep refining his play after so much disappointment?

Seems I decided to check out Sc2 again at the right time. Just WOW. And his play was what I always wanted to see Zergs do... he used both Corruptor ability and he slimed the buildings to stop their production with Overseers.

I'm more impressed by his tactics than speed/precision. He wasn't really controlling in multiple areas or outdoing Classic with great micro/macro. He won by attacking in the right places at the right times. I don't even think Classic considered he would get counterattacked by lings or corruptors like that.

He used everything zerg has in the bag and that's something you rarely see. If zergs start playing like him we'll see much more than one in the next ro8

That was legit. Super exciting series, this coming from someone who finds ZvP a snorefest at the moment. Classic was very shaky on game 1 but that second game was was lit.

Reynor showing some scary zerg play with the level of map awareness, positioning and multi-tasking he displayed. Reminds me of he-who-shall-not-be-named’s + Show Spoiler +

counter-attack style. Constantly keeping his opponents busy and on their side of the map. A crazy hard brand of zerg to execute but so exciting to watch as a spectator, especially when pulled off like that!

Loving that happy go lucky grin as well, and the barely containable happiness during the interview. The passionate Italiano style is definitely a refreshing contrast to the archetypal Korean demeanour that we’re used to.

Worth mentioning, he didn't just counterattack with lings. If there were cannons there, he would send a few roaches to help with it. There was no way to shut down the counterattack permanently with defenses, his opponents constantly have to be ready.

He counterattacked with corruptors to kill the nexus at the end as well. I've always hated that ability but it's great to see a zerg finally using it to great effect.

you can but its 10x harder for the protoss. zerg players will say otherwise. your army is way less mobile and you don’t have permanent revelation (creep). smart positional play has always been nearly impossible against a good zerg so they have to rely on crap like forcefields or high dps amove units and hope you win (immortals/archon/etc)

It feels impossible but if you know its coming, you can just leave a small army near home to help defend, or save some army supply for warp ins in the area that gets attacked. I say "just" but this play style is neither easy to play nor defend against.

Wow... really sad I completely forgot this is today. But I just watched the twitch vod of the last game. Amazing. Reminded me of Serral so much.

'Course they can - IMO it requires a different approach than what classic showed.

1) More map awareness from P. For example - more observers watching the various attack paths, squads of units on roving patrols to keep checking for groups of zerg set up to counter. You only move out to posture once you've checked then you assume that Zerg is sending units around yours while you move towards their side of the map.

2) More harassment - a warp prison + proxy pylons to send in units every time he sends an attack towards a protoss base. These attacks don't require much attention or micro from P, with the result being zerg's precision takes a hit as they divert some attention away from to coordinating such incisive strikes.

Yes, yes, I know. much easier said than done - especially for Protoss players like classic and herO who generally like to gain early advantages using sharp early or mid-game timing attacks.

To 1) observers Just get killed and you need your robos for other things. Unit squads are also too fragile and you dont want to lose immortals or hts so thats not rly an Option i think especially when zergs Just kill those Units for free and move Back

To 2) harrassment ist pretty hard vs this as Pylons get easily killed by lings and If the prism dies once its difficult to replace it because you need robos for immos :D also vs these pushes you often need all Warp ins at Home

It's not really necessary if the harass is good enough. If you have enough cannons, batteries and are maxed out it's certainly possible.

Classic's moveout was just a bad time imo. Getting more air units out would have been better.

Well Zealots are not that useful at home so there are usually some minerals to spare for some counter attack warp-ins (although you need cannons as well. I think Classic's harass was fine though, he made other mistakes.

If Zergs start playing like Reynor and Protosses start playing like you describe, the games are going to be so amazing. I remember liquid hero did this kind of thing a lot. Toward the end of his career he crushed Life in proleague doing this kind of harass with dts. You'd think a few spores or overseers would shut that kind of thing down, but it didn't.

Worth mentioning that in game 1 of the first series, he basically died to counter harass.

In some ways it is quite similar to the multi-pronged aggression that successful Terrans often use. A bit harder to pull off as Zerg (IMO) though, given T's relatively shorter list of mechanical tasks that offset their much harder micro requirements needed for good trades. Effectively controlling and utilizing multiple counter-attack groups as Z, while also staying on top of creep spread, injects, overlord positioning, defense, etc. requires pretty slick mechanics! When pulled of though, I the dividends it can pay are obvious - by taking the initiative, Terran is suddenly off Zerg's back for half a minute, without that pressure, the Z player now has more attention available to focus on maintaining their tempo control, all the while is more likely to be able to keep on top of their other zergy jobs.

Wow really shocked that Classic couldn't get through. SoS looked pretty strong at least though. He needs at least a round of 4 I believe to get to Blizzcon. Congrats to Reynor though.

And here we go with the one million excuses as to why Classic lost. And it's from the people who were hilariously confident he'd be 2-0'd every match and whatnot. People were simply just not aware of how good he was (all the Korean players knew already from ladder). Anyway, huge congrats to Reynor. What a kid

Amazing adjustment between the first and last series. Typically you see Koreans do that to foreigners but damn. Reynor’s late game seems pretty legit!

Zerg was dominating at the most recent top tier tournament, ehich was homestory cup. Commentators were suggesting korean zergs just haven't had much creativity in their play, and that's wh6 they've been losing.

Wow, he did it, congrats Reynor! That last game was crazy, can't believe he won that map.

Best zerg counter attacks I've seen in a long time, those 3 10hp corruptors were amazing.
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

It depends on the situation. Reynor didn't have good upgrades and not the greatest economy, sitting back, at least for a bit, seemed like a good choice.

Not sure which tournament but there were some sick Serral vs Neeb games with this kind of style at the start of the year.

No bad humor, no. Good humor a lot. And I´m not even german.
And when this stuff is so funny, why i never hear Americans shout "Italy! Italy!" when Neeb wins something ? When it started with Polt i thought it was funny, but when it happens every time someone from outside the US wins something then its just arrogant.
But okay, on topic, really insane that Reynor was able to pull that off, played really well overall and in the last game i thought he was going to lose several times, but somehow he made it. Now it will be very interesting to see what he can do in the Ro16, after beating Classic he can surely seriously challenge nearly anyone else.

To be honest I'm feeling the Reynor hype more than Serral right now. Serral tends to win games by simply having vastly superior mechanics to his opponents, but it's unclear if that will hold up against the best koreans (when they eventually meet). Reynor won his games today with great tactics and decision making. Korean zergs don't seem to embrace that side all too much.
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

Wow Reynor is incredibly fast... he was actually crushing Classic with it, hard to believe. And he has excellent micro and group control. Classic is no joke when it comes to speed and control either but he fell behind and had to stabilise, he probably wasn't even ready for it. This kid is gonna go far if he can keep up that level of play. Awesome series.

I can't remember the last time I saw a protoss with like a maxed out vs. 150 zerg (sorry if that's not exactly correct but you get the gist) lose...that was an amazing game 2. This Reynor kid is going places...just hope he doesn't hit Maru (but then who can actually beat him, haha).

Some interesting data points:
- Riccardo (Reynor) goes to high school in Italy, which goes from 8am to 1pm every day excluding weekends
- Homeworks are mandatory and take few hours every day
- According to a recent interview, he could play only 2/3 games a day in the evening before sleep for about 9 months every year
- He started training seriously only since end of May when school closed
- When he had to choose between attending the BTSL finals in Vancouver and going to school, he chose school because he had to miss too many days to attend WESG.

And he's that good.

Classic is no joke when it comes to speed and control either but he fell behind and had to stabilise, he probably wasn't even ready for it. This kid is gonna go far if he can keep up that level of play. Awesome series.

Stats you traitor

Some interesting data points:
- Riccardo (Reynor) goes to high school in Italy, which goes from 8am to 1pm every day excluding weekends
- Homeworks are mandatory and take few hours every day
- According to a recent interview, he could play only 2/3 games a day in the evening before sleep for about 9 months every year
- He started training seriously only since end of May when school closed
- When he had to choose between attending the BTSL finals in Vancouver and going to school, he chose school because he had to miss too many days to attend WESG.

And he's that good.

8am - 1pm? Man I wish I were Italian, my school lasted from like 7a-3p lol.

Reynor is really good, and yes, he is doing school, but let`s be serious here, we all went to school but also played at least 4-5 hours a day, doing also homeworks and all. He may be not full time, but to say he plays 2/3games a day is a big joke.

Anyhow congrats to him, hope he can become someone who makes Serral bleed.

Can't believe that last game, even if it was a Korean Zerg, that play would have been impressive, that literally constant harassment throughout that game was awesome, but that he is a foreigner playing Classic was even more awesome. He looked like he was drunk on happiness in his interview.

The 2/3 games is a "joke" Reynor made in an interview and I see no reason why he should lie about it.

With Classic eliminated, how does seeding work for ro16? Is it just next in line in WCS points?

Not WCS points, GSL points. Similar concept, but not the same thing.

Yeah, but in this case, they probably come up with the same result in Stats.

Yup. If Stats had also dropped out it would be Dark.
