How many viewers will we get today? I think max yesterday was at around 40k. Blizzcon finals should have more than that

edit: apparently it was 55k

Not even the Blizzcon attendees really seemed to care, loads of empty seats.

Yeah kinda depressing tbh, at least at Blizzcon i thought we will get huge stream numbers and a big crowd (i guess it still was big, but you know what i mean)
But hey WCS worked guys

I mean, its BLIZZCON... there's an insane amout of content and stuff to do in 2 insanely packed days.. I'd imagine some people wouldn't wanna spend their entire 1st day watching sc2 (even if huge sc2 fans)... Like, say you're a terran and theres only zest vs stats left, i could see them leaving to check out some panels and whatnot

Problem ain't WCS that much, more like that people prefer flavor of the month casual MOBA/moba fps games rather than RTS which has been niche for quite a long time now.
The stream numbers have been decent for sc2.

Man TB is such a gift to our community, his KOTH was more exciting to me than the actual WCS tournament.

I really hope he doesn't retire anytime soon, despite his health issues.

If I ever get to that age, I hope I'll love games as much as he does.

The idea of wcs also was to get "good" viewer numbers because people can cheer for the foreigners. It apparently did not work all that well because at the end of the day people wanna see fan favorites and the average foreigner simply isn't a fan favorite at all in the current scene.

Right now we have 55k for blizzcon which is a bad joke tbh. Last year it was over 80k for the quarterfinals.
The current WCS system helped foreigners to get better, i won't deny that. But it didn't work at all regarding viewer numbers, it's a big failure in that regard and yes i think that's absolutely partly due to how it all worked this year.

Maybe it would have been even worse without the new WCS system? Like 30k or idk. Hard to know for sure but the fact that it's 55k against 80k for last year doesn't allow us to deduce if it really worked or not.
Since between last Blizzcon and this one, there has been Overwatch, it's possible viewers numbers dropped even harder because of that.

I do not think WCS system does affect viewers number. The point is that the game is 6 years old, it is not free to play so there is not a flux of new players/viewers. In this situation every year numbers will be worse.

So I would not blame WCS for viewers number but i would praise it for raising foreigners level. In my opinion this is a plain success.

Ok i will repeat what i always say: These kind of things have multiple reasons ofc, no i don't want to blame WCS for everything saying that there are no other factors. That is not my intent and everybody who does so is an idiot.
Still, the new WCS system made sure that there is less sc2 to watch, less diverse sc2.
I absolutely believe that pushing foreigners as a basic idea is great. But it simply doesn't work years and years in the lifetime of the game. You have to build superstars from the get go, not have the scene understand that koreans are better for a few years and then try to do it the LCS way. That's ridiculous.
Blizzard is simply way too late with their decisions as always.

Their OW league right now is something sc2 would have needed (even though funnily enough the current iteration of that league seems to be meh as well, the OW scene at least complains; Blizzard is bad at managing their esports scenes)

Well Valve and Riot are surely better than Blizzard and because these three are the only important ones atm i would say Valve and Riot are "good" in this context. Everybody makes mistakes and you will always have some factors you aren't happy with.
But yeah all things considered Blizzard is horrible at it and the new OW thing seems to prove that as well.

Watch this:

The problem seems to be that in the last year teams already formed and they apparently need to split up because of it. Teams also had no information at all beforehand, etc. Sounds familiar right?
I mean the "good" parts in this league seem to be excellent (salary, stability, etc) but knowing blizzard they will fuck this up somehow. Pushing OW that hard also is ridiculous imo, but that is another topic.

I dunno the huge prizepools and random winners every year seem like a big joke (dota that is, Invincible SKT is cool for LoL).
A bunch of LCS / World matches are really boring / useless so I wouldn't call the riot model a really successful one, especially with how much NA players make from streaming.
Most NA teams seem perfectly happy being overhyped yet bad.

I actually think that the initial WCS system was pretty neat. People like countries, especially their own. Crowning national / continental champions built up a nice storyline. Of course, it was pretty much clear that a Korean would win the finals, but still everyone was hyped back then.
That said, you definitely can't compare 2012 to 2016. Back then, we had multiple big companies running regular tournaments, right now, there's nothing much left.
first we make expand, then we defense it.
