The viewership during the actual event was often lower than Cologne, which doesn't make a huge amount of sense to me, but whatever the case, the purpose of the winner takes all was to drive viewership and it failed to do that. If it had succeeded, I'd get behind it, sometimes viewership is more important even for the players and the teams, that exposure, that sponsorship ROI, super important (though not that ESL did anything to help that really since they're not even using team logos in Gameheart let alone the sponsor overlays), but in this case since it didn't achieve that objective either I'd consider it a failure.

Okay, I didn't like the WTA idea from the start, but I don't blame the game quality for it.

But I wanted to say one thing: Thank you for bringing the World Championship to Katowice and NOT to Cebit. Make a stop there (at Cebit), if you must, but don't hold an event there which eSports fan shall cherish. It made the event 100 times better. The CS:GO Final was great, too.

No when you play play for $100k you see how people truly play with their backs up against the wall. This is what SC2 looks like at the highest level.

Sure, for 20k first and 10k second he will play all casual and stuff? No!
He will play exactly the same if possible, because it''s still a lot of money.

The winner takes all gamble was a disaster. Let's never do that again.

Why?

Let me count the ways.

1) Players should actually get paid for their work and their achievements. Winner takes all is the complete antithesis of that. The least player friendly format you can possibly have

2) Running a winner takes all tournament during a period of noted imbalance is a sure fire way to piss off the viewers and rile people up.

3) Winner takes all tournament with single elimination format. The mind boggles.

4) This whole thing was a viewership gamble by ESL. It was contrary to Carmacs own thoughts on sustainability and the eSports "middle class", even if it was just a one off. The gamble didn't pay off. Viewership spiked in the finals for all of the 20 minutes it took for those finals to end. There was literally more downtime than games and it left everyone with a sour taste in their mouths.

SC2 is in a fragile state and in order to make sure it can be sustained, we need tournaments that use fair, sustainable models. ESL said this was a one off, I hope it remains a one off.

People always complain about imbalance.
Single elim is more exciting to watch.
If it wasnt such a shitty finals, I'm sure would voicing their opinions here would do a 180. It's unfortunate we didn't get a TvZ finals.

None of that addresses why TB said it was a bad format.

nah, if they made it so the loser can no longer be a progamer and get kicked in the balls by the winner. THEN we will get the best games!!!

Why so? except for the PvP, this tournament format was alot more interesting. Protoss is just boring to watch.

Because the finals are basically the end The culmination of a tournamet of how a tournament is remembered. When we look back on this in 6 months it won't be my god that Jjakji vs Revival series was godly, it will be remember that time sOs proxy double gated his way to 100k. Thanks IEM!

but that's beautiful isn't it?

Beautiful in its monstrous 2 proxy sort of way that affirms the caricature of PvP.

Though I feel really bad for herO (and I was cheering for him), and though this final was by many standards quite poor (though not by the series planning one, sOs played that really well), I still think it was something to try out once. And I think this is the reason for which we got so many awesome games in the bracket, but in the current metagame with a lot of protoss, that could also lead (and it did) to such a final. So I wouldn't call that a disaster, but rather an experience with its drawbacks and its advantages.

Because let's be honest. It's a shame, but if you want people to give it all, you got to put a lot of money on the table. Make it this "allin-ish", and you'll get some of the best SC2.

I'm totally not in favor of doing this often, though. Once a year could be a good frequency.

IEM cologne games were just as good imo and a better final. Players will try just as hard for 40k as for 100k.

This guy right here gets it. Huge diminishing returns on grand prize after a certain point and it's a far lower threshold than this.

<3

At least the Masterpiece theatre was just as awesome today, "90k for a PvP final, imagine if the real races were playing" really made me laugh out loud .

For anyone who hasn't had the pleasure yet:

Maru and Serral are probably top 5.
