I don't know what happened to Rain. Maru played really well in games 4,5,6 but Rain did not seem to be at his best. Did he really choke rather than just get outplayed? I hope not. Either way, getting that label of choker stuck on him is worse than actually being a choker. It can weigh a player down and will haunt Rain in situations like this again. I've always liked Rain and his Protoss style even if I've never loved it (I've liked it more recently as he showed a greater willingness to be aggressive with Protoss even if he is not a passive Protoss player in the way usually characterised). But, I've always felt that he lacked that something to be a true Protoss champion. The only one who seems to have that necessary swagger, that "fuck it you won't win I will" conviction deep inside is MC even if his light is dimmed and his passion for the game diminished. Maybe that light will burn bright again in time and the President will return to Korea for a third title. I can hope. Congratulations Maru! (Or should that be Optimus?) Congratulations Prime!

On August 11 2013 02:38 Havik_ wrote: NOOOOOOOO Rain ![]() ![]() ![]() It wasn't so much that Maru won, it was that Rain lost. The only game that he legit "won" believe it or not was the proxy rax game. Game 1 was the most beautiful PvT I've ever seen from Rain, in game 2 he defends all that cheeky bullshit. The other games were stupid bullshit from Rain that isn't characteristic from him. Game 4 he attacks into a concave and doesn't retreat when his army got empd. Game 5 he goes for a risky Immortal all in AFTER SCOUTING A TON OF MARINES AND A FAST THIRD CC, when he could have easily just gone for the late game and take a third and go for the aoe tech. Then in the last game he goes DT drop after scouting the same thing? When you're known for the most solid macro play in the game, why take retarded army engagements and do risky builds. Game 1 was the most impressive thing I've ever seen. DO THAT MORE OFTEN... What the fuck. Yes iMad ![]() So um... drop play is cheeky bullshit now? Cuz that's basically all Maru was doing in Game 2 and Rain kept slamming it shut to gain a bigger and bigger lead. Game 4 was a really weird lack of control, I don't know if it was Rain choking or if he was microing the Warp Prism harass and messed up the other front (I mean that's what the observer was focusing on too, so not impossible that's what Rain was doing). Game 5, I'm not entirely sure how you can say Rain can easily go for the macro game when he's already behind in bases and tech. Newkirk is an easier map for Maru to execute a timing attack. Which Maru tried to do on game 1, but as you said, Rain played too perfectly, deflected everything and really made Maru look helpless. But Newkirk isn't the type of map that lets you do that when you're behind. Game 6 I half agree with. It felt like a pre-planned build to throw things off (besides everyone keeps saying how DTs aren't that risky anymore, so maybe Rain feels that way too). In the context of the series though, it's not Rain's strength and not what I'd fall back on with the series on the line if I were Rain. But then again, maybe they tried to be too clever and outthink Maru? Rain losing a DT attacking a depot at the edge of the scan radius though... that was awful. Edit: Maru's been around for 3 years, as long as he doesn't let this get to his head he shouldn't end up wasting this championship by disappearing again. But we'll see how the Season finals go first. Double Edit: Just finished rewatching the series (cuz I wanted to hear Tastetosis's take on it) and Game 4, no idea how Rain botched the HT's. He had them spread, then he lost them in the first engagement, warped in a new round and attacked two more times and never spread them (and got them EMP-ed fatally the second time). No warp prism to distract at the last engagement either, it was the first engagement and he still managed to spread out. Game 5 turns out the eBay's went down after Rain's scout, but I still think it was too late for Rain to take a fast 3rd. He was at one gate + robo at that point and Maru had 3 raxes and was starting to take gas.

Rain should have either 1) squeezed units out of 2 bases and attacked Maru with higher food count, or 2) waited for Maru to attack into him while taking the 3rd base. He tried to attack Maru in wide open ground and tripped his templar micro. Without a doubt set 4 was the most important. Maru had stopped Rain's momentum completely by that point. he had defeated him in a straight up head to head game after already showing him he was dangerous if he went for a cheese build. Now Rain had to prepare both for being cheesed and for Maru being greedy and he just wasn't able to juggle both possibilities well enough. It forced mistakes out of him. Maru got in his head, the same way he got in Innovation's head, he won the mind game and thus the tournament with it.

Maru clearly had the better BO7 plan: a solid mix of cheese and greed to punish an overcautious opponent. Looking forward to next Season ![]()

They then went on to practice that exact strategy and build hundreds of times on that map. Maru didn't just hap hazardley say, "well I'm down 0-2 I better 2 rax". I'm quite certain even if he was up 2-0 he would be doing the exact same strat. Likewise for Rain planning his immortal bust and dt play BEFORE the series even started. This isn't ladder people. Nothing is done hap hazardly or on the spot. You definitely aren't going to do a strat you never practiced consistently. Perhaps, but you can't say that both of these players haven't played countless games on these maps beforehand.
