That's pathetic indeed, assuming the upper decks are empty.

they are. this is just pathetic. the best bw players had thousands and thousands of fans (boxer had a fan club with 1000.000 members according to wikipedia).. and this draws, what, 2000 people for an osl finals? we had over 100 000 attending the bw finals back in the day.

yeah, rip BW, the best and ONLY "sport"

But come on guys, that's when BW was at it's peak, after 8 years of playan. If someone posts the first final where Grrrr won and it's like double the size of this one, than yea, you can say that this final was bad. But I'd say if this was a good run for OGN than all's good, and maybe combining the two teamleagues now, or just hyping HotS up would be enough to have a bigger domestic audience.

While everyone was crying about the size of the audience at least DRG got raped, so congrats for that to Bisong and also for Royal Roading the Fall.

Was it? This was the typical audience number for ZvZ finals. Every other finals had much more fanbase than this, hell I think even the number of fans who showed up in Shanghai might match the number of people who showed up today (and that's considering that cops blocked some people from entering the Shanghai stage).

1) yeahh according to those who remember BW, yes.

2) read the recap. The first game was zvp boring, the other games were epic mindgames and strategy from rain

People have to understand that BW was part of Korean culture. There were no k-pop or korean dramas back then. Sorry to say that video is no longer the predominant culture of korea. Why do you think BW was dying? I do love how the BW supremacists are comparing audiences though. Some seem pretty bitter that their "sport" died lol. Not even hating on BW since it's the first ever PC game I played and I still play it since my comp cant run SC2

Was there youtube? The advent of youtube is very important. And so are other streaming websites for k-dramas

GSL finals fill out an auditorium which is not bad, but please go watch a BW finals from 2005 or so. I do understand that with streaming and all, people will have lower motivations to actually move out to an offline event, but these are the finals.. there should have been more people. and if you think i live in the past, go watch offline LoL events: people are still interested in E-sports.. just not Starcraft 2.

you have to consider that in 2005 bw basically was esports but now we have more than just 1 game that people like to watch.

bw wasnt an "esport" outside of korea. counter-strike probably had 100x the viewers of any bw event when it came to foreign views.

If you count Chinese as foreigners, then your statement is certainly not true. Even in late stage of BW pro scene, there are still huge number of viewers for Proleague and OSL, usually larger than GSL viewers.

actually im pretty sure chinese people were a lot more into cs than bw in those days

WCG 2009 in Chengdu, China during the SC:BW finals between Jaedong and Stork:

Yeah obviously China doesn't like BW.

no one said china didn't like bw, are you even reading the posts you respond to?

This is also what you said:

bw wasnt an "esport" outside of korea. counter-strike probably had 100x the viewers of any bw event when it came to foreign views.

This event took place outside of Korea. The people watching are not Korean, and are therefore "foreign" viewers. There are many foreign people watching a competitive computer game. So why is it not an "esport" outside of Korea?

Let me know if there's ever been a counter-strike event with 100x that crowd.

yah if you had also read all of the conversation you'd see that it was regarding the status of bw/cs in 2005. Not in recent years.

lol that's irrelevant. I mean, what are you trying to say? That foreign BW interest actually rose between 2005 and 2009? 2005 is the often cited comparison year because that was the peak of BW success in Korea, and things slowly started to decline from there. The 2005 crowds were larger than the 2009 ones. So if anything, all you did was just disprove your own point even more.

No, the point was that outside of korea, there was no such thing as professional brood war. Counter-Strike was the biggest game at that point in time, if you look at the whole world.

I know you love brood war, so do I, but to say that it was the only esport in 2005 is stupid, seeing as it wasnt even the biggest one.

Also Kiett, that's WCG. WCG covers multiple games, and after the SCBW finals there was the Wc3 TFT finals. Wc3 TFT was probably the most popular game in China at that time, i don't know if Dota was already more popular at that time.

Not saying non of the fans were SCBW fans, as you can clearly see some fans have cheerfuls for the SCBW players. But i do think 60% or more of those people mostly were there to see Infi, Sky & co (not entirely sure who was playing at that time).

On the CS vs SCBW issue, i have no idea which one was more popular in China.

Also speaking of the crowd size in this OSL, it was more than i thought. Not too many people of course, but i feared worse. If anything i was a bit disappointed in the online viewership numbers at Twitch.tv. But their stream was fairly bad, at times nearly unwatchable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that when posting these pics one should mention that the crowd was pretty much the same for every single final game that was played on the same day as can be verified from the VODs. This included the famous eSport title "Asphalt 4" played on a mobile phone. It also included games like CS and WC3. I have my doubts about how conclusive evidence this crowd is of the popularity of any individual title on this list.

You're gonna compare dramas?

Let's be honest here. How many non koreans even know of korean culture back then? Look at it now, so many non-koreans so into Korean culture. That's how BIG k-pop and their dramas have become. Obviously thanks to technology and other stuff but a video game isn't really the "thing" anymore in korea. Starcraft only happened because it was a cheap means of entertainment back then. That's why people like Boxer and Nada were celebrities with fan girls and whatnot.
