We'll be taking a break for a few weeks to figure out a new approach to develop the 2v2 community. Tournaments are a start, but clearly we need something else as well. If you have any input, please leave a comment!
Do you enjoy team games? Have you been looking for a 2v2 event on the NA server to participate in? Do you think team games are stupid and broken and want a chance to prove it by using that broken build you theorycrafted and keep posting about but somehow don't have any replays of? Then we have the tournament for you!
+ Show Spoiler [the goal for this tournament] +I'm Toboe and my 2v2 ally is DoubleReed. We're a master team on NA. You can find us both here on TL if you need to PM us. We were sad when z33k stopped their weekly 2v2 tournament, so we're trying to start up another one.
I think there should be more team game tournaments because they're downright fun. No one is trying to make 2v2 out to be the same level as 1v1 here. The goal for these events is to bring life to the team-game community because of how fun the games can be, and to worry about being serious and professional later.

This tournament happens every Monday night at 00:30 GMT (+00:00). The next Plat'n'Up 2v2 tournament, #22, will be held on Tuesday, Sep 18 12:30am GMT (GMT+00:00) on the NA server.

Map makers, want your 2v2 map in the pool? Just pm me with a link to your map's thread on TL and how I can find it on the NA server!
Casters, we'll be streaming, but this is also an opportunity for other casters to get some live-team game experience. If you'd like to cast, please contact us with a sample of you in action and we'll add you to the list of official streamers for the event! Then you just hang out in the chatroom "2v2" on bnet and see if you can get into a game to cast.

Other than fame and prestige, not yet, unfortunately. This is kind of a trial run. We will be doing this weekly if this one is any success - i.e. if more than 16 teams sign up. Thanks for showing the interest in any case. Your response made me think of a poll that should help see what reasons people who are interested in participating aren't for this particular one. I've added it to the topic under "When". It should also give us a head start on figuring out the optimal time for a weekly tournament.

Yeah and from what I've seen the basis for 2v2s is generally larger in EU. I'm not sure how much I can do since I'm in NA. If I Moved the tournament to a time where a large percent of the teams are from EU (and I think the EU scene could definitely muster up more than the couple of teams that have signed up so far ), it wouldn't be logical to host it on NA. I'm also not quite in a position where I can buy extra accounts for other regions, so if the tournament were to be moved to the EU server there would have to be volunteer admins as well.
I'm not against the idea, but it would take some more planning

If the number of teams is more than 2 but fewer than 16, we may do group stages. Group stages will give more content to the audience and let the players have more losses before they're knocked out.
From my experience with z33k's 2v2 master weekly, at least 10 teams usually signed up in the last 48 hours. However, that was an established tournament that paid out. We'll have to see.

Doing a tournament for just lower leagues is always hard because of league faking, which is especially possible in 2v2 since I'm sure people value an arranged 2v2 team ranking far less than their precious 1v1 ranking. So that leaves us with the option of expanding which leagues qualify for this tournament. But the reason I gave a cut-off was to create an easy goal to get people to play 2v2s and put a little effort into it. So for now I'm just going to encourage those teams that haven't made it into platinum to keep working at it
Finding arranged teams to play 3v3 and 4v4 tournaments is even harder. More people per team either means fewer teams or more possible schedule conflicts (or both). If you have have a 3's or 4's team, split up into some 2v2 teams and join this tournament. Once we see enough interest for team games through the 2v2 tournament, we'll see about doing 3v3/4v4 tournaments.

I signed my teammate and myself up. Now I just have to talk to him and let him know about it lol. We're a high masters team #2 or 3 behind azide and superninja last season with 800+ points I believe. Looking forward to playing some other good teams.

Thanks to all of the teams who have signed up so far! This is a promising start. We'll definitely have to figure out a way to get a prize pool going for future weeks.
By the poll under the When section, so far it looks like later in the night might be better for future tournaments. I'll set up a poll to figure out a more exact time once this tournament is over and we'll experiment to find out where we can accomidate the most teams.
Also just a heads up, I'll need some people Sunday night to mess around on a 2v2 map so I can test-run the stream. You can worker rush or whatever, it'll just be to test my stream since no experienced casters have offered their services yet and I do want some live coverage.

It would be nice to see lower leagues and 3v3 or 4v4! my Battlefield 3 team is really interested but we are in silver =(

My friend and I are platinum and even though we didn't make it too far we had alot of fun.
The tournament is in a really friendly environment and pretty well organized. Another cool thing is
that if you make it a bit further in the bracket or even if you ask for it, your game might be casted and
streamed. Well thank you again to the organizers for this really nice idea and we will sign up
for sure for the upcoming tounaments. cheers!

My partner and I got knocked out in the quarterfinals on Monday but we will definitely be back. This event was surprisingly well organized and looks like it will only get better. You can count on us being there every Monday.
Edit: Also, is next weeks tournament created yet? Wanted to go ahead and sign up.

Tournament #2 is public now! Please note the rule changes:
- Both semifinals will be casted. If you make it to the semifinals, please wait for the casters before playing.
- If you forgo the veto process before the first game in a match, the loser for subsequent games can pick from any map in the map pool
- Special for this tournament: The finalists from the last tournament will be playing a show match the hour before. If they sign up for the tournament, their 10 minute walkover time for the first round will not start until after the show match is over. That way they can still participate if they wish.

We got to see how one of the teams made it to the finals when we casted their games live, but what about that other team? Well, we just casted some tournament replays from the other team that made it to the finals - laLAlA and DeathWish.
You'll find the vods and replay packs for each tournament in the second post of this thread. Please check them out!
I think the mic position is better now to balance the audio between us (thought now we're both a little low/unclear...). I also modified my SCFH filter to automagically show and remove the overlay between games, so we won't have to worry about leaving that up any more!

I would do this, but it's on a weekday. If you were able to do it on Friday or Saturday or something I would love it. Me and my 2v2 partner are masters so I look forward to doing this. I'm fine with a no prize pool for now. Hopefully you guys can move it to a weekend soon enough :D!

So apparently my partner thought actually having a life outside of SC2 is acceptable, so unfortunately, we won't be participating in this one. He will get a stern talking to and we will be there for the next one.

I went to the store today, and this guy came up to me. You know what he said? I'll tell you what he said. "Dude, are you casting the Plat 'n' up 2v2 Tournament? I hear that shit is bananas!" and I was all like "Dude who are you? You're some kind of alien," and then he flew away in his spaceship and I never heard from him again.
In conclusion, we're casting the finals of last week's tournament at 8:00 and right after that we have yet another tournament! Be there or die trying! Link to Stream!
Next week we're going to have the tournament on Saturday afternoon to accommodate all the Europeans and people who are unable to participate on weekdays.

The replay pack and VODs are up from tournament #2! You can find them in the 2nd post of this thread. I've added spoiler tags to that post to make things a little more clean and made direct links to the times in the vods so you can just click the time instead of having to navigating to it yourself.
Here's our change log:
+ Show Spoiler [Changelog after tournament #2] +Rules:- Race switching is now covered in the rules.
- Remakes are now covered in the rules.
- Ro16 is now a Bo3.
- The veto process is now: the team which vetoes first (a disadvantage) will get to pick the map for the first game of a match (an advantage). We had it wrong in the rules so one team got both disadvantages. It is now correct
Admin:- We learned how to correctly manually check teams in. If z33k does not allow you to check in even if you've signed up, please have both team members in the "2v2" chat on BNet so an administrator can manually check the team in.
- We learned how to manually arrange the bracket if teams show up late after the first round has started.
Stream:- The overlay now correctly shows and hides based on if SC2 is in a game or not...
- The music, however, will just keep playing during a game. We'll work hard to remember to shut it up when we get into a game. We'll also build a playlist for downtime.
- For casting I think we got much better at remembering the score in a match and we're working on referring to players by their names more. As always we'll just keep casting and improving the best we can.
- I used my
terrible graphics skills to make the overlay look a little nicer in a few ways.
- The game sound was a little loud compared to the casters. We'll adjust this for next time.

Thanks to everyone who participated, we got close to a full round of 16 this time and our semifinals and finals got even more exiting! Every week this event is getting better and better :D. Tournament #4 will be held at the same time next week, you can sign up for it here.

I bring grave news... The power in our apartment has gone out and pepco the electricity gods have not told us why. I'm sending this over my phone emergency backup internet, so I hope this message reaches you. Running an online tournament without power will be rough, but we will perseveer. We shall overcome this challenge. We might end up 'borrowing' internet from the mall. In any case, you still need to get your ally and sign up!

Unfortunately yes, we're still starting at 2:30AM CET. We've tried weekend times and got terrible turn out, and we both work during the day so as much as we'd like to host a second tournament at a reasonable EU time, we currently can not

We discovered that the source of the power outage was a rival 2v2 tournament that had sabotaged us. We're back online and everything should be good. No need to worry about future outages, because we have wiped out the rival 2v2 tournament off the face of the earth, destroying any traces one may ever discover of their existence. Don't bother trying to find out who they were. We sure didn't.

Went back and watched some of the stream and yeah, anyone playing that drinking game is gonna get MESSED up! Good tournament guys. Hopefully GWi will get his priorities straight and stop going out on Monday nights so we can start playing in them more often.
Oh and just for future reference. My name is not pronounced as a word. Its just letters. So most people just shorten it to the letters Xk. But you guys seemed to have fun with it during the tournament, so feel free to say it however you like.

Doesn't blizzard say the new maps are available online? You should try the new 2v2 maps in the pool if they are!

I think its a little early to start putting them in a tournament map pool. Maybe give them a couple of weeks.

If anything we might pull a map from the 2v2 map making thread. I can't say that these will be any better or worse than the ones blizzard has put out, but I do want to get community map makers involved and motivated since I think they're one of the keys needed to get 2v2 off the ground.

That does sound like a good idea. I guess it won't matter what the map pool is now that I think about it as long as we know the map pool ahead of time and you have the map pool in the OP so all is good.

I'll try to gather statistics about which maps from the map pool have been picked the least in the tournament and then make a poll in the topic for which map to remove and another for which map to add as the "map of the week".

Just 1 announcement! The map pool will now be changing weekly. Every week there will be a poll with 3 maps currently in the map pool to decide which one gets removed, and another poll with new 3 maps to decide the replacement. Maps will be eligible to be removed based on their tournament use (maps played more often in the tournament are safer), the amount of time they've been in the map pool (to ensure a fresh pool), and other factors (statistical imbalance/degeneracy, very short average tournament-game length, no longer being in the bnet ladder, etc). The polls for this week should be up tonight!

I've pmed couple of the map makers from this thread to get their permission and to make sure they get the map hosted on NA. The options for the poll to pick the replacement map will be from there. If the map makers don't get back to me quickly enough for the poll, we'll also include the new maps blizzard added for the season 8 ladder.

Here are the three maps to pick from this week, all from community map makers who gave us permission to use it in the tournament. A lot of the map makers got back to me, so to be fair I'm just going in the order in which they got back to me. For future weeks there are even more community-made maps, as well as the new season 8 maps from blizzard, and (eventually) old maps that haven't been in the pool for a while.

Also, unless it's general praise like locopuyo gave, please keep any criticisms or in-depth discussions in the TL threads I linked in each map's description. This thread isn't a place to debate the design of the maps since we've got a couple of those threads already just for 2v2.

I don't want to speak for "the reeds" so I won't speculate on how they pick maps to include in the map pool. What I will say though is just by looking at it, Bel'shir Marquee looks like a really good map and I'm very interested in playing on it.

We wanted to have a variety of maps from different sources to choose from. We are planning on switching out a map every week, so Bel Shir and Stronghold will have plenty of opportunities to be circulated in.
Edit: We considered switching out like three maps a month, but this way can hopefully get more people involved with our tournament and 2v2 more consistently. And switching out a map a week is way cooler than 3 maps a month.

Bel'shir Marquee was in the vote last week. It got a close second to Kuituneet, which means it'll be up for vote again sooner than later.
Since there is a chance that the only split-main map in the pool, Scorched Haven, could be removed from the map pool this week, we did want to include Molten Crater as a potential replacement in that sense to round out the pool. The last thing we want is every map to cater to a single style. Desolate Stronghold is set to be in the poll next week. As of right now I have 9 new maps (including the ones in the poll above) that can be rotated into the map pool, so we're not short on maps to add. I'm also in the process of gathering more from map makers.

Hey, I talked with DoubleReed and I figured I'd just post here. I started a Bronze to Gold tournament and had the idea to also do a Plat to Masters tournament. Then I saw your guys' tournament. Instead of holding mine I'd rather join forces with you guys as a regular caster. If you accept then I'll send the guys interested in my tournament to yours. More participation and (hopefully) viewers. I think it's a win-win
Also, one of the teams that wants to join mine is kind of high profile as far as the forums on battle.net are concerned so I think it would be good advertising :D

Ever since twitch took away the "save forever" option they've been deleting my vods rather quickly (except the ones that I had marked as "save forever" before they took that away). Alright folks, This week we're just offering a new replacement for Tyrador Keep: Tyrador Battlements, made by Namrufus! Battlements has the same interesting main/natural design and middle design, but includes a 4th shared base so that the map, unlike Tyrador Keep, is actually symmetrical instead of favoring one team in certain spawn positions.

We actually had Citadel in the pool along with Twilight the first few weeks simply so we'd have at least some maps where everyone could take a third. Somewhere along the way Citadel was unpublished from NA, and we've been rotating mostly larger maps in, so hopefully we can eventually get rid of Twilight, too

Yeah battle.net gave a lot of people issues. We apologize to all the teams that couldn't make it tonight because Blizzard was unable to get this under control. Many people were able to sign in at random points so we decided to go ahead with the tournament with extra time for the first walk-over in case battle.net let some more people in. Hopefully this will not become a regular occurrence and the servers will let everyone on for next week's tournament.

Is this worth watching? Ive only hit highish diamond on random 2v2 but it seems everyone there is around gold 1v1 because of the higher player counts and lower mechanical skillcap, so the games are not very good at all

The final 16 of the tourney will likely be full of mostly if not all skilled Masters players.

I'm not biased or anything but hell yeah it's worth watching. Previous weeks have been pretty entertaining, and this week has a mix of the regular teams and teams that joined just this week to get at the prize pool. There will be plenty of standard play to learn from and abusive builds that hopefully will get exposed

I dont recognise most of the ppl who have won previous tournaments here O.o. seems weird since I have been following high level 2v2 on both the EU and NA servers pretty closely since the game came out.

-Improve your casting skills. maby look at some other casters (not only sc2 casters ofc) and take nots so the show gets more exciting.
-get help, U say I are doing all of this alone, the 2 of U. maby see if u can get admins to help out in small stuff.
-remove lunar, dont say that we should not do that on ladder. becouse what they did in the finnals is standard on that map. the map is favoring that play so much. PZ is kinda OP on lunar. TP is relly having a hard time on lunar.

We completely agree that our casting is pretty dry right now. You could prerecord the map introductions and play one or two between matches. That would give people something to look at between matches. You could reuse them for a few weeks since there are, hopefully, new viewers each week. Even if there are no new viewers I doubt it makes a difference whether you play a video or music during a break.

There is by the way a bug with the version I uploaded due to using some campaign dependencies for some doodats and different model watchtowers, essentially, creep tumours are visible to all players, like they are in the campaign. You might want to fix that (I have no idea how, I actually don't know how the map editor works at all)
Also, if you want to use it, you name it I guess, I have a tendency to name these things in hard to pronounce ways.

Alright, the poll is over, and now our map pool is a majority community-made maps! We're slowly moving in the right direction as far as map quality goes. And even if you liked those old Blizzard maps, look on the bright side: vetoes for each round will at least be shorter now

Hey guys, you should try grabbing some friends and get used to the awesome community made maps in the map pool. In the arcade it can be a little weird to find them. I've found if you search battlements, you can find Tyrador Battlements, if you search Marquee you can find Bel'shir Marquee, and Tantalus and Kuihtineet you can search for. These maps always lead to some really awesome games, so get used to them so you can crush your opponent's in next week's tournament!

Woah you're right! I usually do that the morning after the tournament, but these past few weeks I've had to head into work early so I let that slip.

91 games were under 10 minutes.
Since this is an online tournament, we depend on the players to give us actual tournament replays. There are some stray 3v3 and 1v1 games in some of the older replay packs and some unintentional duplicates which were uploaded by players, but I've been more diligent lately about removing those before uploading the packs. Still, there's always a chance another one will get through...

I have done some statistics from several 2v2 tournaments. I dont have big numbers jet and not 100% accurate, but all 4 tournaments have teams that are mid to high ranked. And ofc platinum up have been used=) so thx here is the NR.
And this is how its is.
TP vs TZ 21 / 34
TP vs PZ 30 / 42
PZ vs TZ 41 / 40
PP vs anything 15 / 34
ZZ vs anything 14 / 29
TT vs anything 4 / 10
(have watched over 300 replays.... omg) I have made how many times TP vs TZ on all diffrent maps too but that NR is to small. But I can say this so fare.
Don´t play TP on molten crater! don´t
But TZ vs PZ looks kind of balanced. TP is having tubbel. but dubbel race have big trubbel where PP is worst off.

PP is very, very map dependent. There are a large number of allins that need very specific responses from both players to hold. Some tournaments limit the veto count or have strange maps. If you haven't already practiced on them you can easily lose to diamonds even if you are top 50 NA.

Some important things to note:
- The number of games and overall level of play are both too low to definitively say anything about balance. However, as a 2v2 community we can see where we need the most work right now.
- Double Race (PP, TT, ZZ) teams are hugely under-represented. Solid strategies for these teams are almost nonexistent and we really can't come to any conclusion about balance on such ridiculously small numbers. Nonetheless, it does appear that PP - and to a lesser extent ZZ - needs help in coming up with solid strategies that not only survive early game but are effective in the late game.
Matchups having problems:
- PPvPZ - as stated before, PP needs help in general
- PTvTZ - Some extra work will have to go in here to see what TZ strategies are most successful and how PT can adjust.
- ZZvTZ - like PP, ZZ is statistically weak overall, very underrepresented, and TZ is - by far - the most developed race combo as far as strategy goes
edit: as others have said above, and I just want to emphasize - I'm not saying PP is underpowered, but they are definitely not being played "correctly" by most people for the current manifold of 2v2 strategy.

good start on some data mining to balance the matchups. ilike how new maps are used too. i would also like to say some maps imho are imbalanced. i think you did a good job of identifying them. i would take out magma core and put in desolate stronghold . thats just my two cents.
