It IS easy. If SC2 can READ a 1 hour replay using a 50mb file, just using the coordinates for any move, and production facility using the resources of the game, in the same way the game can save just the last screen and then instead of rolling it like a replay, the game just goes on from that point.

Yes, it's quite possible to keep a file open for write access (and read access at the same time, except that's not relevant in this case). Have you actually ever programmed something related to file-IO?
