Well, after reading the detailed account @reddit, now my mind on Naniwa's behavior has changed once again. He may/may not have broke the rule (otherwise the admin would not have attempted to stop him from watching the replay), and the whole situation does indeed paint Naniwa a dick to me.

Even if he did broke the rules (which as far as we can tell, he didn't), there will be people who find this inappropriate/unfair/whatever you want to call it.

Even if he didn't broke the rule, it was a fact he called MLG a 'joke tournament'

While he may not have done anything wrong/against the rules that requires him to 'defend himself', the fact he called MLG a joke tournament portrays himself in very, very poor image.

Ignore all the fiddling before hand, and think of when the whole MLG joke tourny happened:

Imagine this.

You're up against the best zerg player in the world in many players minds. You're 1-1 against him, you losing your last map, so you get to choose.

You were told that Shakura's was cross-position, and prepared a VERY specific build for this. You scout and find him not cross-position. Ok.. What the fuck do you think now?

Your WHOLE game plan is ruined, your scout was meant to arrive and position the cheese, now that you have found out that this doesn't have forced cross-position spawns, your cheese will not work, and you've already ruined your plan for that game if it continues(in this case forge first instead of nexus).

Think how you would feel when the admin came and told you that you must continue from this game, because the map is correct and forced cross-position spawns were removed in a previous tournament.

Now, I don't know about you, but after being told that it was cross position only, preparing a cannon rush for it and then getting told by admins that you must continue from the current game.. I'd feel pretty angry, pretty disappointed and very frustrated, and NaNiwa isn't known for his nice manner like some players.

I dunno man, I'd feel pretty fucked over, especially since to NaNiwa this is his life.

Except Sundance said that no admin told Naniwa that the map was cross-position only. The reason he thought it was cross-position only it seems is because he hosted the first game on the wrong map, which had Nestea in cross-positions and when he came back earlier than Nestea, he watched the replay (possibly illegally) on the wrong map and Nestea was cross-positions.

What do you think is more likely... that NaNiwa made up the entire story and raged for no reason... or that 1 admin decided he doesn't want to own up to his mistake?

With Naniwas history, I honestly think it's more likely that he made it up...

There's a difference between being BM and being a liar and a cheat, you know.

Good god, I never thought I'd be the one defending Naniwa on an internet forum. The guy was BM as fuck and mediocre as all get-out in War3, and I mostly just wished he'd shut his mouth in the past, but the amount of hate that's being directed at him here is ridiculous.

Here's the quote from Sundance:
"He chose the wrong map then freaked. Delayed the broadcast and lashed out. It's not our job to make sure he knows which maps have crosses and which do not. He also chose before the admin went in to talk to him.

Onward and upward..."

I think Sundance would be able to tell if one of his admins even went to talk to him first. I hope MLG at least looks into the possibility of Naniwa watching the replay today.

Sorry, here's the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/mimu3/naniwas_thoughts_on_mlg/

Again: how can you know that he wasn't told before the series even began by another admin that the map was cross-spawn only? We don't know anything at all.

Anyone who thinks he won based on seeing NesTea's opening is, quite frankly, being absurd.

Yeah I agree on that last part. 1:37 of play isn't going to tell him enough. I think it was to confirm cross spawns so that's what he watched it for.

If anything possibly caused a Naniwa win other than his skill, it was the constant interruptions. That can throw a player off. That's all I can see causing it.

For what? It's not illegal to watch replays between games. Nestea could have done the same.

Also people saying that Naniwa was the reason the game was restarted in the first place are wrong. The game was restarted after the admins told them to pause because the stream was still on commercial. They were then allowed to go to the restroom and were told to restart the game when they got back.

Just watched the vod, everything is blowed out of proportions imo.
But I hope Nani will still apologize to MLG about the "joke tournament", this would be the right thing to do.

1.37 is enough to tell if it's a hatch first, a pool first or simply a 6 pool. It matters more than people realize.

MC vs MVP game 3 shows how rediculous forcefields are.

For those saying MVP got a greedy 3rd, he got it quite early and EVEN IF it didnt pay off a tiny bit by then he still built 4 bunkers that should be enough to compensate due to how cost efficient static defence should be. I mean to read MC like a cheap novel and get not two but FOUR bunkers out and still get OBLITERATED (wasn't even close).
Some say the glass is half empty, others say it is half full... i say, are you gonna drink that?

MC vs MVP game 3 shows how rediculous forcefields are.

For those saying MVP got a greedy 3rd, he got it quite early and EVEN IF it didnt pay off a tiny bit by then he still built 4 bunkers that should be enough to compensate due to how cost efficient static defence should be. I mean to read MC like a cheap novel and get not two but FOUR bunkers out and still get OBLITERATED (wasn't even close).

Yes that game was quite shocking... apparently he either needed medivacs or 8 bunkers ^_^;

Just watched the vod, everything is blowed out of proportions imo.
But I hope Nani will still apologize to MLG about the "joke tournament", this would be the right thing to do.

He did.

Oh, nice. Good for Nani, glad he did it.

How do you know he was? This is all anecdotal, but I'll trust the admins that have had to admin the same maps for two days over dozens of games.

Does it really matter in the end? He cheated, whether he benefited from it or not. Pure and simple, he cheated if it's true he watched this replay. You can't just cheat and say "I didn't get anything from it" and say it's ok.

The thing I love with MLG is being able to load up the whole past day VOD and watch it like if it was live. Makes for a perfect breakfast.

QFT. if people are so eager to find out what "really happened" pls redirect your speculations directly to some MLG officials. otherwise this "NESTEA GOT CHEATED BY THIS BAD BAD NANIWA PERSON" will put more oil into the fire and I do not like either "GO NANI" nor "GO NESTEA" fraction spamming with their fanboyism...

the best thing to do will be to politely decline to play, perhaps publicly explaining to people your decision to do so, making it 100% clear you were given the wrong information.

to use all sorts of underhanded methods that may or may not give you an advantage and then top it off with a terrible ceremony that was intended to be antagonizing...is sure to make you a hated man. there is a difference between idra's bm and this guy's bm.

it's hard to take idra seriously when he does it, it's sort of sardonic but not exactly personal...just like wrestling trash talk. not the case here. this guy, i think, really means it.

Naniwa does come across to me as a different kind of character than IdrA, but he's an interesting one nonetheless.

Well, since we're all about making eSports more like physical sports, I'll treat pro-gamers as the public figures they are and talk a bit about what I see in their personalities.

IdrA, as you put it, mostly comes off as sardonic, prone to fits of rage (though he's tuned that down) and saying what he pleases. You get the sense that he's elitist and arrogant, but that deep down he's a nice guy and has a funny personality, and I think that he's gotten used to that image and is now doing a lot of it for show. All in all, I think IdrA is pretty sociable and not at all the psychopath that a few try to paint him as.

Naniwa, while similar in the sense that he can also come off as elitist and arrogant, does seem to have a darker past. I don't know what it is but many people have alluded to it time and time again. His emotions seem even more powerful than IdrA's, and manifest in a way that is almost frightening at times (whereas IdrA's outbursts are mostly just funny). That is probably the reason people find him harder to approach - because he takes it so seriously, and is a bit socially awkward to boot. I think he genuinely wants to be the best, even moreso than IdrA and other pro-gamers, and that this isn't just a career for him, but something closer to a mission.

You can kind of tell this from his interviews, with the way he conceives of himself, and of pro-gaming in general. I was particularly struck by the following snippet from his Providence interview after the first day, where he was talking about other pro-gamers choosing to leave Korea: "if you don't make sacrifices, you can't really reach anywhere. It's something every gamer should know, but apparently they don't."

i wont make excuses for naniwa, but i think this gets so blown up because he lacks charisma. he is kinda awkward and generally not a likable figure. if someone else, that has more of a neutral personality like stephano or dimaga had done something like this people wouldnt go to the conclusion that he did it for the most vicious reasons.

im not saying its not understandable, we do judge people based on charisma and naniwa even looks kinda lika a person you wouldnt buy a car from.

The incident happens around the 9:55-10:00 mark on the red stream. The first two games were a couple of minutes before that though.

To be fair, Naniwa did prepare specially for MVP's style, and MC has some of the best PvT in the world. But yeah. MVP's TvP looks shaky. So much for the bonjwa cries ^_^

Schooling Nestea twice, even after BMing him. You guys mad because Naniwa won even though he BMd or what?

if you beat nestea, you must also beat his fans. otherwise you truly have not won.
