Hello everyone,

I would like to pass the word about a StarCraft II tournament in Seattle, Washington hosted by Yoi! Gaming. Yoi! Gaming is a group of Entrepreneurship students at the University of Washington. We decided to have a little fun with our capstone project and throw a SC2 tournament.
Online preliminaries are going on right now, and you can join by participating in our Ladder System.
The top 32 players will compete at a live event in Seattle for a piece of the Grand Prize Pool ($1000 prize pool). There's an entry fee of $20 to enter the Ladder, which will go toward helping with the prize pool. However, the pool is set and GUARANTEED regardless of participants. I also want to share a coupon code that will give you guys $5 off the entry fee for being a part of the TL community, the coupon code is: "TLforum". Type "TLforum" under apply coupon when you are on the join the tournament page: Join The Tournament Here When? The online ladder system is LIVE now. The Final Showdown is April 23rd 2011 in Seattle, Washington. Format:
The tournament format is a ladder system, and the top 32 players in the ladder will play at the University of Washington in Seattle to compete for the Grand prize pool ($1000 prize pool).
Map Pool will be announced prior to the tournament. To climb the ladder, you will get 15 points by winning against other Yoi! Gaming members. You can also get 3 points by submitting replays when you win matches in battle.net 1v1 quick games.
You can only play an opponent ONCE for tournament credit.
You must type "gl hf yoigaming" at the beginning of each match in order for your replay to count for credit in the ladder.
We hope to see you on the ladder soon!
GL HF,
Yoi! Gaming

Will there be a meeting for the finals? I live in Seattle...
|
Yes, the finals will be played on April 23rd on location at the University of Washington.
|
Nice, I already signed up and registered! Thanks for the coupon code. I'm looking forward to the tournament final (assuming I'm in the top 32)!
|
I would love to play this... unfortunately I'm returning from a work related trip on the evening of April 23rd. =(
|
Sorry to hear that! If you register for the site (free), we'll keep you up to date on the next one.
|
cool stuff ! I'd love to play in this
|
the ladder qualifier is really a bummer. is it really necessary? will there be far too many people just showing up for $20?
|
We decided to go with the ladder system to do something a little different... we want to create a community on the site so that hopefully the participants will go to know each other a little better. Also, the replays are available on the site (Under "buzz"/"replays"), so you can get a feel the play style of your competitors before the tournament. Just wanted to make things more interesting.
We're still a ways from filling the 32 player capacity, so if you sign up, you'd still have a good shot of making it in without submitting a replay (but that's no fun!)

When is the deadline to join the Ladder? This sounds pretty cool.
|
In on this, pysched to have a cool even in Seattle. The ro32, is that going to be bo1;s or how does that work.
Also are we going to be just like in the informatics or cs computer lab, or are we gonna take a lecture hall hall and perform in front of an audience with flashing lights and crazed fans?
|

You can join the Ladder up until April 22nd at 12:01 am. However, that is also when we will close the replay submissions and lock in the top 32. (So if there's 30 players signed up, it would make sense, but if there's more, you probably wouldn't have time to climb the ladder).
The best way to insure your spot is to register early and begin submitting replays.
G'luck!

The ro32 will be bo1 due to time constraints. We'll be playing in the iSchool lab, but we do have a lecture hall in PACCAR reserved if we get enough people that want to watch. We'll either stream the final 8 from the lab to the hall, or set up a few computers in the hall.

Hey Edwad,
We're definitely interested. We have a caster, arthurMrZmeng, who's already on board, but we had talked to him about adding a co-caster so we can stream 2 games simultaneously during the preliminary matches.
If you're still interested, let me know, and I'll send you my contact info. We should meet up.

Fair, it's no fun, but for some people planning so far in advance is kind of a turn off. I live a ways away (so long drive and potentially a hotel involved) & not sure if I'll be free that weekend. If I could decide very close to the date, it's possible I could go, but being forced to choose way in advance turns it into a no...
Maybe something in the middle? Like top X in the ladder get some sort of incentive (like a bye into round 2) but walk ins can still play... unless of course you have harsh space requirements.
|
Having been to a lan-party in the iSchool lab before, space is definately an issue and 32 really would be the max.
I also like the idea of the 1 month ladder run ups, it involves more games and especially as they are ladder games, it's easy to participate in. It's a fair way to determine seeding, and it's sick to have a cool event actually in Seattle.
Plus you can sign up up til like the 23rd, so if you know a week before that you can make it, you can play a ton of games and climb the ladder easily. (If we can get 32 people to sign up!)
|
Thanks Panzer,
You took the words out of my mouth with that response. We do have a space issue with the iSchool's lab, and we chose to run the Ladder to allow our competitors to play more games and hopefully feel more involved in the community before and after the tournament.
We've gotten mixed reviews, some players love it, and for some it's a turn off. But the players on the ladder already are enjoying it...
And you can't argue with the prize pool
|
Hey mockturtle,
What do you mean by being forced to choose way in advance turns it into a no? In my opinion, the tournament format is nice in a way that it attempts to build a community around the tournament itself. There is no penalty for losing as of now, but you will be able to catch up rather quickly if you win against the players in the tournament. What I like about the ladder is I can get points from playing other players in battle.net as long as I validate my replays. Even though I'm joining just for fun, this gives me more chances to win since I will be randomly matched with players similar at my own level (bronze, rofl). Hopefully you will be able to enjoy the tournament too bro, good luck have fun!

I could not agree more bro. It's so nice to play at my own time and convenience. I can submit replay and watch my standing move around in the ladder. Unlike other tournaments where I have to set up meeting times and things with other people, this is much easier. Although I might be able to get some points off of someone not showing up in normal tournaments ;p haha

Hey! I created an account on the website, but didn't pay to enter the tournament. I had a couple of people I'd never spoken to before challenge me out of nowhere. I went back to the website, and somehow, I'm on the ladder anyways! How did that happen? I'll consider actually competing if you let me, but as it is I'm not really sure what's going on, and I'd imagine that it's not really fair to the people that did pay.
EDIT: Never mind, I get it now. I'm not in the tournament proper, just on the registered users list. So players in the tournament can challenge registered users to get points? Interesting.

That is correct. If you are registered in the tournament proper, you can play anyone with an account on Yoi for points. But if you are not in the tournament proper, you're obviously not in the ladder, and cannot submit replays until you.
We chose to go this way to encourage people to challenge you, and so that if you can feel what it's like to be a part of the community before deciding to join the tournament. Hope to see you on the ladder soon!

Can we invite other people to watch us play if we make it to the final rounds?

Of course! In fact we encourage it, and spectators are free. The more the merrier.

Hey guys,
I saw this notification on yoigaming website, and I should pass this on to you guys.
Thanks to MoeLuster, he has graciously volunteered to host a channel for everyone to find/play their Yoi matches (the ones worth 15 points).
As of right now the channel is "YoiGaming Channel."
We all should try to meet up in that channel and maybe get some (15) points! Good luck and have fun guys.
|
I live in the Seattle area and really want to attend this even, but I have a few questions.
I'm not really clear what this 'ladder' thing is. Here's what I think you guys mean:
Find other Yoi! Gaming members and submit a replay if the game is won with 'gl hf yoigaming' typed in the beginning of the match?
Do we find Yoi! Gaming members from http://www.yoigaming.com? And we can only play 1 game with them? And if we lose, we don't get any points?!?!? And I can get points if I go laddering on the StarCraft 2 laddering system and submitting the replays?
What are the points for anyway? I understand that the top 32 ladderers will go to the tournament, but what if there isn't even 32 people in the ladder?
Sorry, I'm just really confused, lol
|
I understand computers will be provided, however, CAN we bring our own to play on? im used to playing on a tiny laptop and switching to a regular computer monitor will most likely effect my performance.

Yes you "can" bring your own computer, provided it has wi-fi and can connect to the University of Washington's network. If you are a UW student, feel free to use your own UW net-id. If you are not a UW student, we ask that you let us know a head of time if you are bringing your own computer, because we will need to provide you with a guest login account to access the network. We will also need to check your computer for 3rd party modifications to the SC2 client, as our terms of use for the tournament prohibit any form of 3rd party software.
Also, we are not responsible for connectivity issues or hardware malfunctions if you are using you own computer.
If you're okay with these guidelines, then yes, feel free to bring your own computer!

I think you will get 15 points by winning against people who are registered in the ladder.
You can also get points if you play against people in battle.net through the quick matches mode, but you have to type "gl hf yoigaming" at the beginning of the game to claim tourney points (to validate your replay was intended for this tourney). You will get 3 points for this.
And I believe you can only claim points once from the same person, but we are always free to play each other as many times as we want, just like a gamer's community in general.
Yes you don't get any points if you lose, but as of now I'm pretty sure you don't get penalized either.
Actually, I wonder about your question too Bullet. Although the chances not enough people signing up is slim, what happens if there is not 32 players registered by the night before the final event? Do you guys offer walk-ins? or will you invite famous players? etc?

Hey Guys,
All good questions. VermoutH answered your questions right on. You can't play yoigaming members (or anyone) more than once for tournament credit. It prevents 2 people from exploiting the ladder by playing each other over and over again.
IF there are not 32 players registered in the ladder by the day before the tournament, whoever is registered for the tournament will be invited to play. If there is an uneven number invited to play, the first bi-matches will be assigned by ladder ranking.
However, we do have 27 people signed up for the tournament as of right now, so the chance of not filling the 32 spots is small.
|
Okay its on!
$1000 in prizes on the line. Are you guys going to have food at the event? Does it all happen on April 23rd?

Details about times would be nice. Also when is the cut-off date for submitting replays?
Also a note about mice, I'd imagine that (most) people are going to want to turn off mouse acceleration and enhanced pointer shit and all that jazz, want to make sure that if you need admin permissions or something to change mouse settings that we will have it
This tourney is gonna kick ass!
|
Just uploaded all my games, most of them are even dated to boot.
Also could we still get some venue info and times and things? I know it's at the ischool computer lab, but still can't find the time of day.
|
Hey Guys,
Sorry for the lack of details on the event. It's buried in the the website, and I didn't realize I didn't post on the TL thread.
We're sending out an email tonight to everyone on the user list, so look for more details.
The event is being held at the iSchool which is in Mary Gates Hall. It's on the top floor, room number 420.
Here's a link to the location from google:
Location
The event will start registering at 10 am. We will start the first round of the tournament at 11 am. You'll have the hour in between to play warm games/get used to the computers.
THE CUT OFF FOR THE LADDER IS at 12:01 AM, April 23rd. If you are in the top 32 at this time, you're in.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. Email me at "cjwong25@gmail.com"
