personally i think they should automatically play each player in their group, so that way you don't get lucky seeding As I said before though if every player plays each other once then you get the situation where a player that is already out (Maka losing 2-0 already) can affect the last game by letting a clan teammate beat them or not actually give much of a stuff because they are already out if clans/rivalries arent involved. It seems to me that GOM have put a lot more thought into this than some are giving them credit for.
Hm, true. I guess there will be flaws with every system.

How can player get "unlucky"? When facing against a better player and losing? Are you implying that a better player shouldn't win? How is this different from getting Nestea on Ro64 in old format? Same applies to if "getting unlucky" is getting your worse matchup. Saying that shouldn't happen implies that race should be a factor on how players get matched up.
I can't see why tournament should make rules "to prevent luck/unluckyness". The "in-game-unluckiness" maybe but that's why it's Bo3 and matching vs different players.

I liked this new format. And also pretty good games today. Nothing that fancy but not boring either.

I think this is really a good system. There can't be any shenanigans (by losing on purpose, or not playing your best because you are already through) and therefore every game is deciding.
Because if everybody has to play everybody, it could happen that 2 people from the same team can play against each other when one is already through and the other one could get a tiebreaker.

HQ vod's finally work here xD

Did anyone notice that after Nestea finished off his second match that he was putting on his shoes?
Reminded me of Day9 when he said that he has to play with his shoes on =P But opposite of course.

Flash plays without his shoes too and I think Reach also. It's a KTF thing, I guess lol.

BTW I think the league format was decided for timely broadcasting in mind more than anything else. But I can't help but wonder if this will force more cheesy games from the players. I mean, code S has been touted as some kind of holy grail for two months and everyone vied for that status. Now it turns out you can lose it (or are in danger of losing it) after 2 short games. Then you have to wait for, what, a month? It seems a little thoughtless and cruel.
I hope my feeling about upcoming series (cheese/all-in fest) turns out to be wrong, but I am not holding my breadth.

LOL he and bestfou are tied 1-1 but he lost to nestea (who ended up 2-0) while best beat maka (who ended up 0-2)... No. I don't get why people think this is so strange. Had Polt advanced, that would've been unfair because they both were 1-1. Now one of them is 2-1 and the other 1-2, therefore the guy with 2-1 advances. it IS strange, because what is the point of a group stage if you don't play everyone in your group. It is by arbitrary seeding luck that theBest does not have to play Nestea, arguably the strongest player in that group. having everyone play each other would only be 6 games total anyway (barring tiebreakers) which is similar to the system that works now anyway. AB AC AD BC BD CD. Especially in a Bo1 players could potentially cheese 2 wins over a quality player and knock out a deserving one from S class completely. I'm just saying that seeing two players play two games and end up 1-1, one is decided as better by who he had played previously. If this situation comes up again, it will really annoy me.
The point of a group stage isn't to play everyone in your group. I find that the GOM group stage really well set up to achieve the following goals:
1) Make it easier for the best players to consistently advance 2) Still be fair to everyone 2) End with a maximum of 6 games played with no ties
It does this by: 1) It is seeded: It starts out with 1v4 and 2v3 2) If you win 2 in a row you advance 3) If records are tied, head to head determines who advances (no need to ever play more than 3 games)
I like that it is seeded. I like that you play each other player at most once. I like that you end the group stage with no ties and the need for "points" like in a round robin. Its really a great system.
Edit: Also, the goup stage is a lot like a best of 3: If you win 2 games you are through. If you lose 2, you are out. This is true in all circumstances.

The bo1 group stage feels like a train wreck to me. Really wish the tournament aspect started at the round of 16.

Nope, never can be fair if you don't have to play the strongest in the group while others have. Thats everything but fair to everyone.

Holy Production values batman, just got in and had a chance to watch and this is an absolutely amazing look for the start of the season!
Bit bemused by the way they did a Polt vs theBest tiebreaker though, surely Maka could still have beaten Polt and NesTea defeat theBest which would have meant we had 3 on 1-2 and needed a tiebreaker round robin between them or something? I understand there's time constraints and so on, but it kind of feels like theBest got a massive break with not actually having to face NesTea.
NesTea is awesome though, very happy to see him smash his way through.

This format doesn't make any fucking sense, lol. Don't get why Maka didn't get a chance to play Polt and force a re-game situation or give Polt the opportunity to advance 2-1.
|
OMG are we going to have to go through "this doesn't make sense.. I don't understand.. it isn't fair.." bs every day for the next 2 weeks till we get to ro16??
The system does make sense, it has been explained SEVERAL times as to why it is setup the way it is. Stop acting like guy on message board has thought of things that people whose job it is to run the tournament haven't.
It isn't that hard to understand either. I don't get why people keep saying it is so confusing. There are also several threads where people break it down and explain, go read before coming in and posting and sounding ignorant. Jesus there is even a thread where a guy made picture graphs holding your hand through all of it.
Lastly, it is fair. Already posted a few pages ago why it is fair, and the difference between fair and equal.

Because Maka lost both of his games whereas Polt at least won a game.

Wow, confusing results section, but I think I understand it.. Gotta be a better way to show that though lol.

If maka had done better dropship/thor micro highground to low ground and back he would have held the ultras and his 3rd, leaving nestea on 1 base minerals. Also his 2x barracks +lab and bunker with single marauder walloff in the beginning was genius. I was surprised that neither tasteless or artosis commented on it.
Flame away if you want but I felt that game was a great deal closer than many people thought it was and I though maka even had it won. All the rest of the games were forgettable but I think thats how blistering TvZ might end up looking in the future, taking half the map and starving the zerg with terran defense advantage. This is 100% true. Tastosis were commenting like the game was over when NesTea had no money in the bank and only one mining base while Maka had similar amount of food plus 2 mining bases. NesTea did a GREAT job of breaking the tanks/marauders with lings before sending in his ultras. If Maka had been able to hold that choak near the southeastern watch tower for just a little longer, he'd probably have won the game.
Also, I liked his build and play in general. Against Roach/Bling, his defensive strategy was pretty good, and if he's able to transition into a couple of Thors a bit earlier (and, you know, stim his marines a bit more effectively), he could've held of NesTea's mutas a lot better. It was that more than anything else that won the game for NesTea.
Finally, I think it's lame that Maka didn't even get a chance to play the player that advanced out of his group. I guess I understand why there's a concern about players being motivated in final games and whatnot, but hey, the World Cup deals with it. And if you're worried about teammates giving eachother games, make them play the "team kill" matches first, before the other results are known. I guess there's going to be problems either way you do it, but I think I'd prefer a system where the groups are round-robin instead of one where one player can potentially be eliminated from a pool without having played players that advance.

lulz why do they have this kind of bracket (winner vs loser) instead of winner vs winner double elimination?...
