wow, extra observer improved the quality of my gsl experience by a whole lot

then again, this ridiculously unintuitive format reduces the quality of my gsl experience

Ok, I know a lot of people are going to disagree with this but... best game of the night was maka vs nestea. If maka had done better dropship/thor micro highground to low ground and back he would have held the ultras and his 3rd, leaving nestea on 1 base minerals. Also his 2x barracks +lab and bunker with single marauder walloff in the beginning was genius. I was surprised that neither tasteless or artosis commented on it.

Flame away if you want but I felt that game was a great deal closer than many people thought it was and I though maka even had it won. All the rest of the games were forgettable but I think thats how blistering TvZ might end up looking in the future, taking half the map and starving the zerg with terran defense advantage.

This is 100% true. Tastosis were commenting like the game was over when NesTea had no money in the bank and only one mining base while Maka had similar amount of food plus 2 mining bases. NesTea did a GREAT job of breaking the tanks/marauders with lings before sending in his ultras. If Maka had been able to hold that choak near the southeastern watch tower for just a little longer, he'd probably have won the game.

Also, I liked his build and play in general. Against Roach/Bling, his defensive strategy was pretty good, and if he's able to transition into a couple of Thors a bit earlier (and, you know, stim his marines a bit more effectively), he could've held of NesTea's mutas a lot better. It was that more than anything else that won the game for NesTea.

Finally, I think it's lame that Maka didn't even get a chance to play the player that advanced out of his group. I guess I understand why there's a concern about players being motivated in final games and whatnot, but hey, the World Cup deals with it. And if you're worried about teammates giving eachother games, make them play the "team kill" matches first, before the other results are known. I guess there's going to be problems either way you do it, but I think I'd prefer a system where the groups are round-robin instead of one where one player can potentially be eliminated from a pool without having played players that advance.

that game was total commentator fail for tastosis. i kept hoping maka could pull back, it was indeed very close at the end, thats why nestea even brought his queens to heal. if he would have lost those ultras he would have lost the game. also, maka wasnt playing far below nesteas level like they kept pointing out - he actually played in a clever way to get half the map and max, and if nestea wouldnt have broken him in the 3rd wave he would have won

This whole system is totally screwed up.

IMNestea goes 2-0 and advances fine.
Maka goes 0-2 and gets eliminated fine.

But polt prime and thebest fou split 1-1 and thebest advances simply because his first opponent was nestea.

Freaking retarded. At least do extended series on it if this situation happens. In a normal round robin, polt prime plays maka wins and goes 2-1 while thebest plays nestea, loses and is 1-2. This system needs to be fixed now.

The other "fair" option is to do a mini swiss.

Play game 1 and 2. Winners play and losers play. Then those with 1-1 record play. Much simpler.

They did a deciding match between polt and thebest afterwards, thebest won, thus he moves on

The reason that this format is fair is because of seeding. When you get a seed, you get a distinct advantage over your opponent. If they didn't have seeding, then this format wouldn't make sense.

nevermind then, I didn't see the game listed anywhere. Thats ok then.

Edit; There is no tiebreaker match wtf are you talking about?

thebest and polt played 2 games against each other and went 1-1. It's retarded.

They need to switch the format to something more normal ASAP.

It is about the record in the group play head to head isn't a factor when 2 players are 1-1 after 2 matches they have a 1 match playoff.

Jesus it isn't that hard to understand, stop bumping the thread because you can't comprehend the system which has been explained, in depth why and how, SEVERAL times.

No I understand the system, the how and the why, but I disagree with it because it does not establish the proper ordering. They need to add a single deciding match in this scenario giving the higher seeded player a better chance at winning, but not an unfair advantage.

You are right. I think Polt should've advanced because he had already beat TheBest but he had to beat him twice which I don't quite understand why...

The current system is completely fair to all of the players. True, top-seeded players have very significant advantages, as seen today. TheBest got to advance today because his seeding was better than Polt's. But every player had an equal chance to obtain a top seed in this GSL.

However, the current system is not the best way to do it. The most fair way to do things is to have a round robin (just like the World Cup does), so that everyone faces everyone in their group.

The only issue is how to handle tiebreakers (you can't go by goals scored)... they could handle this by simply having the higher seeded player advance. Or they could play additional games (could get messy if it goes 2-1 2-1 2-1 0-3 though), which is a method I don't approve of.

I think they should have had TheBest vs Nestea and Polt vs Maka. If TheBest and Polt both win, then TheBest advances due to higher seed. If they both lose, then Maka advances. (Polt is supposed to be at a disadvantage due to being seeded 4th, remember.)

I agree, this would have been preferable.

Earlier I thought I saw a very good reason that this would be a problem... but evidently I must have been wrong. This actually sounds perfect and I can't imagine why the hell they aren't doing it this way. This is completely fair and has no flaws at all.

Polt was 0-1, TheBest was 1-0. Polt then defeats TheBest. There's no reason that going 1-1 should eliminate TheBest but going 1-1 makes Polt advance to Ro16.

Poor Maka

Right after Jinro and Foxer, he was my favorite SC2 Terran

Code S Prize money - does it stack as the player advances - it looks like it does. The champion will gain almost US$55,000 if it stacks. The prize pool can be seen at the 23:00 minute mark of the first VOD or here: http://siliconsports.net/2011/01/gsl-season-four-tournament-info/

Best GSL group of the year so far. Boxer and these maps make for some hugely entertaining matches.
