A double elimination structure has been mentioned a couple of times and not been talked about as a solution to "teh brackets sux" style complaints. A double elimination qualifier gives you a significantly higher percentage chance of getting good players in the ro64.

Imagine if you were in FruitDealer's bracket for the GSL1, you could have easily been ro16/ro8 material, but being paired with the one Zerg to rule them all you would have been toast before seeing a single TV appearance. If it was double elim, then you would probably win your losers bracket after losing to the future tournament champion.

In the first GSL, there were actually a lot of really not strong ro64 compeditors. If you have a double elimination structure, your chance of advancing two good players is a lot higher (because a pretty good player won't be totally kicked out by a great player).

Plus, this has the added benefit of being irrefutable. If you lose two matches, you really don't have any cause to complain that you didn't get a chance.

The only problem with double elim is that its more administration to run (and more matches), but these are offline qualifiers so its at least not the audience's time. Please give us a better prelim structure and therefore a better ro64!

Have a registration "fee" that is returned to you when you show up and play. Like $10. That is if they have a problem with "fake signers".

great idea.

btw if boxers opponent is really a 1.2k barely over 50% winrate guy ranked below 50th in his division, boxer should easily make it.

Oh man, I'm really sad that July didn't make it .

As much as I want Boxer to get into the GSL, I can't help but worry that he won't be quite up to par with the other players. Judging from his games with Idra and Jinro, he just doesn't seem to be playing as sharp as he could =/. Like with TLO, I worry that if he tries to pull out too much flair instead of playing solidly, he could lose matches he might otherwise have won =/.

There goes about 20,000 viewer counts for GomTV i guess? yes, the way they are doing this pre-liminaries is retarded.

Yes, people named Julyzerg should get a free pass and everyone else should have to work their way though prelims.

no where in my post did i imply that JulyZerg or any of the big names should've gotten a free pass, i'm saying they just lost some ratings potential with July being eliminated. and you do not agree that the way that this preliminary isn't as fair it should've been?

July's losing had nothing to do with the structure of the prelim. It had nothing to do with "fairness." He lost to a scrub protoss. Stop making excuses.

sigh... again no where have i implied that July's lost was due to the structure of the preliminaries, i am saying like how Boxer got 2 wins by default because of no shows, and then luckily gets free pass to the next stage of elimination process... it should'nt have been run this way...

i hope you will stop drawing wild conclusion and put words into others mouth now -.-

i think many July fans are dissapointed as well, but yeah, Boxer even says that he practises alone all by himself and doesn't really talk or discuss about SC2 to anyone else, but who knows right, sometimes happy things happens!

how can people not understand this? SC2 is new. There are no universal rankings/ladders that can fairly seed people in pre-lims for the GSL.

it has been said countless times that the 2010 GSL tournaments will create the first seedings for 2011 where seedings will start to take place.

till then completely random is completely fair. even if july has to face boxer in the first round of the pre-lims.

There's this thing called the Blizzard ladder system and all.... It would be so easy to seed people based on their ladder ranking...

And please don't go on about how ladder rank means nothing, there is a very high correlation between ladder rank and skill, and at least this forms quite a good basis for a seeding system. Possible enhancements might be factoring in win percentages.

get it through your heads. in any REAL tournament, seeds are ALWAYS based off results. GSL is new, so there are no results to base seeds off. that's why they're having these open prelims, so they can establish seeds and the top players will be seeded in when the real GSL starts. sorry to break it to you guys, but favourite player != top players. can you stop posting rubbish now, i'd like to see Boxer's fate without having to filter through all these posts.

There probably are people who don't have that much money. It might sound I'm joking but I'm not.
But it is the best idea I've heard so far and this could potentially work for the best for GSL.
GSL asking for an insurance by letting the registrants paying 10 bucks and they'll keep the 10 bucks if a registrant doesn't show up which could sum up nicely when a large group doesn't show up.
