wow this all looks so confusing (as usual :S) and you have to pay to play? isn't that against some sort of blizzard rule or something as well as being bad in general

CEVO will always be pay to play. Our tournaments do not break any of Blizzard's policies or rules. We will be having a season and tournaments year round for SC2. Unfortunately, running a company costs money so we do have to charge. We are unable to run CEVO, while throwing some nice prizes your way and not charge you.

The registration for this event is now open and the first 128 paid players registered for this event will start tournament play on Monday, August 23rd. Competition will run weekly Mon-Thurs.

I can understand that. Luckily there are free tournaments out there through other companies for players that just want casual play. We cater more toward the competitive players. This is just a small event. After this, we will be setting up our season which will likely be more than just $5 but will be a lot larger prize pool. I really don't find $5 too detrimental when it comes to competition play.

so you gotta pay even more to play in other events as well?

i mean there are huge invite / qualifying / free events that have the same if not bigger prizepools

edit: with no cost

Good luck with this. Although most players will stick to the free tournaments that also have prize pools that are roughly the same if not larger.

Yeah, its a shame but this is very true... Need to get some sponsors for this tournament and drop the entry fee!

CEVO getting involved in SC2 is definitely a good thing as far as I'm concerned. I look forward to playing in their league, but I fear putting 5 bucks down on a tourney to lose to 5 rax marine in round 1 would just kill my apetite for competitive play.

I'll definitely be watching to see how the tourney goes though.
As it turns out, marines don't actually cost any money -Jinro

That is why I made this event double elimination. Also, you only have a 1 in 127 chance of being matched up with him in the first round.. Those are good odds!

I believe this is just a starting event. CEVO has a pretty good track record running paid tournaments and leagues. Not sure what they're planning for SC2, but in CS they've always paid out $5000+ for season winners of the P league.

If it's just apprehension about paying an unfamiliar company, know that CEVO is one of the main American CS leagues and has been around for years. EG, coL and all the others play in it.

Agreed. I've never payed to play in a tourney and I've won shit tons of money and prizes at them, so it's definitely possible. It's a thing called sponsorship, companies need to learn about it. I understand where CEVO is coming from, but in a game like SC2, it would be good to take a look around and realize how massive the competitive scene already is, and how many huge, huge big money tournaments are popping up, with 10x more prize money and no entry fee. This definitely will play against CEVO's favor.

Everyone can keep putting the same posts about how spending $5 on a league keeps them from paying their bills, however this post was not made to be flamed, it was put here to inform the community of an upcoming event. If paying to play in a tournament is not your style, that is fine. Please leave this thread open for those that are interested in our event. Thank you.
