Hi I play with a Happy Hacking Keyboard 2 and, it has no non-function F1 keys. So I was curious if I could play without them as I have bound the home (normally enter) to my mouse side button, with idle probe, and army idle on the mouse as well. I cycle my nexi with the home button and, can spam chrono. However I think I would be GM level with location hotkeys and, I was curious if anyone made it far without the location hotkeys. Most pros use it, and I was wondering if there were any specifically protoss who are notable who go without location hotkeys much love.

I was going to buy a PS4, but then I game to my senses that I am going GM in Legacy & Streaming so that is my plan let me know if you need a practice partner who made round of 16 in GSL season 3 & March 2011 respectfully (code A).

As for your keyboard... Maybe you could bind location hotkey to "alt"+Key on the number or QWERTY rows, with shift + ALT to create them (since you don't create them that often).

Or try an alternate layout like TheCore or FleetHotkey, although the layout of the CTRL/ALT key location might screw those.

I only use hotkeys 1-7 for protoss and terran (1-6 for zerg), so I assign 8-0 to camera hotkeys.

im zerg and bind the bases to 5 6 7 8 and double tap, there is a queen in this grp as well so i can inject, base always lines up perfect center of screen. is this what ur asking?

I don't think location hotkeys are a necessity, but they are obviously helpful. I'd recommend remapping them, however, as F keys aren't very convenient, anyway. It's not like you need all of them, so if you rebind a few things, you could probably slip them into the left side of the keyboard (Q through B).

Rotterdam has been GM a couple of times, he doesn't use location hotkeys as far as I know. Don't think Nathanias (terran, another GM) does either. These guys don't have the best mechanics, though. It's a handicap for sure if you don't use them.

BTW just curious, you mention GSL code A. I followed GSL quite a bit back then, but I've never heard of you.

So, don't worry OP. In gold league, it's already above average if you use hotkeys and control groups. I doubt that camera hotkeys are that common below masters. It definitely helps using them but it won't get you 4 leagues higher.

TBH when i see pro's stream, they only use the camera location hotkeys for the start of the game.
And they always just use them for their bases, spamming between them.
But later on, i've noticed that they somehow forget about using them and just use the minimap instead.

If you could master the use of camera hotkeys, and not just use them for your bases (because you actually have a specific button for that) then that could make you a faster player, i garuantee it.

Other than that i feel they are quite overrated. I don't use them either, but then again i'm just a scrub master league player.

I'd say camera hotkeys are incredibly important to effective play. You're a faster player, not just in APM but in execution as well. They are oh so helpful, but not necessary to play without. Destiny is GM without the use of camera hotkeys at all.

Yeah, I used to watch Day9 back when it was relevant for me - I was platinum then.
I remember this video as well. And as I stated in my previous post, it would indeed be beneficial to master the use of camera hotkeys. Re-hotkeying new locations and replacing old ones constantly during the game would enable you to respond faster to different situations than just using them for macro - i.e. hotkeying the base locations.

As for pro's, good ones too, I feel the camera hotkeys are underused in that aspect. That is just my impression and I may be completely wrong, but I've been watching streams for quite a while now, also during my training to become a better player, and during that time I have noticed the way pro's use the camera hotkeys and as I said, they mainly use them for macro purposes.

As a Terran you could use the camera locations at certain hotspots where you often do drops. In general you can hotkey a common fighting location, I have also seen some people hotkey the location of their main ramp or you could also hotkey the location of where you are currently attacking. There are certainly possibilities like this that are viable, but it's another aspect of already difficult mechanics to master. On top of microing and macroing, hotkeying units and structures you would also have to stay on top of your camera hotkeys - as a mere human that is quite the tall order.

That is the optimal use of camera hotkeys I feel. And personally, I don't want to incorperate another set of mechanics - suboptimally - just to cycle between the bases when I have a single button for it. Granted the camera hotkeys lets you choose which base to look at specifically, but with the cycling button you just cycle through them 1 by 1. As a Protoss player I average 2 bases in all my games, so I figured there is no need for the camera hotkeys. But if I would ever aspire to become the best, I would definitely look into ways that would make me become as fast as I could be.
