Introduction: we all know the classic muta, speedling, and baneling(maybe) combo for ZvZing. Many have turned away this combo in favor of roach infestor. However, i want to tell you that muta ling is not as weak as some may think.

About this guide: this relies on the fact that Roaches are not a counter to lings, and that when individually surrounded, roaches are killed quickly.

1. Early Game(credits to all the posters who have posted this
to start off, do the +1 atk speedling build:
+ Show Spoiler +

10 Extractor Trick
11 Overlord
11 Spawning Pool(you should have one larva ready to morph for a pair of lings to kill drone scouts)
13 Extractor
15 Queen
18 evo
17 Overlord
lings and a few drones

Additional notes:
Put an ovy near the enemys ramp to see if hes going to blok it.
First 100 gas goes to +1 melee atk the next 100 goes to speed( they should finish around the same time)

Expand and get your mains 2nd gas when you send your lings

Against fast expo builds, this may end the game right then and there due to the fact that the speedlings are so overwhelmingly powerful.

Against speedling ppl, the battle will be quite lopsided and can really force your opponent to get more lings to balance the fight as you confortably expand and drone up. ( go to 2a)

Against roach ppl, try to run through the ramp if his roachs are out of position, if you cannot, camp outside his base to prevent him from expoing.

2a. Transition against ling/bling/(mutalisks or infestor)

Try to delay his natural as long as as you can(You want to get a few roachs or banelings to back your speedlings up) while you get your natural up and tech to mutalisks.

If he transitions to Roaches, go to 2b instead.

Send your mutalisks onto his base. If he has mutalisks of his own go to 3a, if he has infestors go to 3b.

2b. Transition against roach/infestor

Tech to mutas and banelings.(and get burrow too)

He will have to get a good amount of roaches to even move out of his base, however, you do not want to lose your initial speedlings, so move them back when he masses a good amount of roaches.

Note: if he doesnt seem to building a lot of roaches, be ready for some type of one base tech as you use overlords and speedlings to scout for any hidden expoes)

Now send your mutalisks, however, MICRO THEM! Move them around wildly so it will be very hard for him to aim the FGs with his infestors(believe me, aiming the FGs would be like trying to snipe a small piece of diamond on a ring from a mile away. He will be very frustrated and will spam infested Terran. So just harass another mineral line instead.

Dealing with his attacks: Now youll be wondering how speedlings can kill off a mass number of roaches. So heres the plan;

Burrow a huge amount of lings and blings at a choke, when he goes over the area, unburrow your lings and blings. This will cause his roaches to be suddenly surrounded(I have found that zerg players dont usually put their overseers as part of the attacking army, and even if he does, use your flock of mutalisks to snipe it) you should also have a a few speedlings to attack his undefended base to punish him for it. if the battle is extremely lopsided, he'll probably automatically GG. other wise, go to 3C once lategame approaches.

Notes: HARASS HIM TO DEATH!!!!!
KEEP GETTING UPGRADES FOR YOUR LINGS
Use overseer(s) so he cant burrow his roaches.

3a. muta v. muta
Your mutalisks should be able to beat his mutalisks by sheer numbers as youll have the better economy. (get upgrades for your flyers and try to stay one base ahead of him)
if its a standstill, then your cracklings and ultras will do the trick.

3b.mutaling v. ling infestor

Move your mutalisks wildly whenever you engage so that he'll just waste his FGs on nothing.

keep on teching and getting upgrades, and play normally, and you should win.

3c. End game against Roach infestor

take advantage of your fast army to continously harass him(baneling drops are viable here too!)(with your huge mutalisk flock, you can usually attack his spore crawlers head on)
You should have cracklings already, just tech to either BLs or ultras as your main force and atk when his army is out of position trying to take out a harass force.

Notes: Use your mutalisks to take out any undefended tech buildings( you can really piss him off if you kill off his roach warren, infestor pit, or ultralisk cavern)

post any objections to this build, i will try to read them

Hey man, I just got back from a ban. I'm loving your ideas about this, but do you have any replays I could watch so that I can see how to do this properly? I like going muta ling in ZvZ, but the only problem whenever I do it, it's not good enough and all of my mutas die.

Never seen mutaling work in zvz so I will need a good amount of replays to be a believer -- if I see muta, I just add hydra and attack and win. Not to mention 2 fungal growths can kill all of your mutas.

2 fungals cannot kill mutas.

Fungal growth to light or non-armored units = 36 damage over 4 seconds or 8 damage per second.
Mutalisk HP=120.
2 fungal growths = 72.
120>72
Therefore, your point has been proven wrong and you should probably edit it to avoid a ban. Now if you mean 2 fungal growths and some anti-air attacks, then please clarify that in the future.

I would really appreciate seeing some replays to see your take on this build.

I have had some success on large maps doing muta/ling like Tal Darim.

Having that early mobility allows you to get ahead in econ.

Upgraded lings + fungal growth can wreck equal upgrade roach armies as long as their infestor/fungal growth count is low.

If you use just a few mutas at a time to snipe infestors, it will force them to be very inefficient.

The opponent has to have the right combination of hydra, roach, and infestor to be able to deal with your forces. If you start marching your roach army across a large map and you are depending on a few hydras and infestors to deal with the mutas, you will die if the muta count is too high. The infestors can be picked off or forced to burn too much fungal growth energy. If you roll out with too many hydras, you will be very vulnerable to ling/baneling.

Some things to keep in mind is that the combination of upgraded speedlings and mutas completely denies all scouting from the opponent and it makes it very difficult for him to know if you are droning, teching, or building an army.

This build is very map specific, but can be used successfully.

In my (admittedly limited) experience, this build really struggles with a player who can get to a midgame roach/bane/infestor composition and pushes. What I generally do on the defensive end is throw up spines and make a few extra queens to deal with the first 6-8 mutas, and then get a few infestors. I know I'm going to get rolled when the ultras come out, so I mass up for a midgame push that hits while hive-tech is researching. How would usggest the mutaling zerg deal with this midgame composition?

I just don't see how this is viable, you're really delaying getting your expansion up and then you're really delaying pressure because you get +1 attack before you get zergling speed. A fast expansion where the other zerg knows what they're doing should be able to hold this, conversely a 14 gas 14 pool speedling expand build should beat this too because you'll be outproduced and you'll be behind economically.

Beyond that, your general composition that is muta centric just isn't viable. Your theory that upgraded zerglings can hold roaches is a really poor one for three reasons. As already stated roaches with +1 attack tear apart zerglings, zerglings are also very larvae inefficient so you're going to be sacrificing a lot of potential drones to produce the amount of zerglings that you need, the other player can also supplement their roach ball with a few banes. I know that you want to say that the mutas will pick off the banes but one good baneling hit can take out 15 zerglings it's a really narrow margin of error.

Fundamentally too, mutas are just too big of an investment for the ease that they're countered. Let's say that you get fast muta up and I'm a noob who has completely missed that you're doing that. If I've been massing roaches and upgrading them like 99% of zerg players do I'm going to 1a the roaches to your base. For you to stop that you'll have had to invest a ridiculous amount in static defense and sacrifice a ton of drones to make a ridiculous number of zerglings. I just don't see how you can viably do that and have a worthwhile economy. The argument that mutas kill roaches is bad too because they can't do it fast enough. I'll focus down your hatcheries before you can take the roaches out and I'll be building a hydra den at home, If you say screw it and commit to a base trade scenario the roaches will get a structure kill victory before the mutas do, maybe you can fling drones all over the map and build extractors everywhere but that's tenuous at best. All of that assumes that I haven't predicted mutas and built a hydra den (which builds much faster than the spire) or seen a spire with an overseer.

Can you post some replays of this working against masters or high diamond level players?

I'm in gold and I can't recall when I last lost a zvz because of mutas. Fungals hit no matter how much you zigzag, if that fails a minimal investment in hydras will do the trick to protect basic structures then you can overwhem with roaches. No amount of lings will stop roaches and as was said, lings are very larvae inefficient. At some stage the opponent is going to move out of his base and attack you head on. Then your mutas will be foreced to engage and in a head on fight mutas lose against just about anything assuming roughly equal foodcounts.

it is, its very effective in big maps but kinda weak in small maps.

You should try to micro 2 groups of mutas(yah its hard I know) and snipe the banelings and infestors, if one fungal lands, you still have the other group. also, you can have banelings burrowed randomly around the map that you can use to kill his banelings(very economical lol)

Also, by getting a good number of queens, you can easily transfuse your mutas while tanking the banelings left over. once his banelings are wasted on ur queens, retreat and lead him to your burrowed ling/baneling trap.

what do you mean lings cant stop roaches? At lair tech burrowed lings unburrowing right under roaches is very devastating, and not to mention ul always be one upgrade ahead of him anyway. banelings are for softening the roaches and killing the infestors b4 he even realizes whats happening.

I will upload some replays, maybe after my tests.

By the way, imma Gold too, i learned this strat from a diamond ranked friend.

A bunch of replays showing you play this style would really improve your guide. Otherwise it seems nice thought out, however I have a few objections.

A proper sim-city zerg will be able to ward a natural expansion pretty well versus speedling counterattacks, will get hydralisks and infestors and simply use the fungal + fast attacks of the hydralisks to molest your mutalisk flock. I am not bragging when I say that for the past many many months I have not lost a game to a zerg who has gone speedling -> expand -> fast mutas... Again a replay would help convince me but a good zerg player simply wont waste a fungal growth on a miss, and once he has you (as long as he has 3 infestors - which if you have mutalisks he probably does by that time) he will chain fungal you to death at 0 cost to himself. I'm sorry but I'm not convinced - the mutalisk is in my eye simply too weak to be worth the cost, and will only work if you catch him by surprise with them. And if you play a completely gasless build, this probably will not be the case.

You can't be serious? Roaches at a choke where zerglings cant surround is best case scenario for roaches. It's just wall after wall of lings doing a "lemme at him" dance. You need to post replays of this because even and your and my level, zvz has moved on.

Another big problem with lots of mutas is that infestor is pretty much mandatory in ZvZ so even if he dosn't scout spire comming he will be prepared. And FG hardcounter muta harrass.

Mutaling used to be quite popular in beta because the midgame ZvZ wasn't really defined since 90% ended with ling bling wars.

The unburrow ling argument is ridiculous, every high level zerg is going to make an overseer the second that they hit lair and scout out exactly what their opponent is doing before they commit to an attack. Overseers are really popular anyway because of burrowed roach or burrowed infestor rushes. I always send an overseer with my army if I push out because I don't want my opponent to abuse burrow roach regen.

Again please post replays where this works at a high to semi-high level.

Question: Is muta actually effective in ZvZ? I feel as though I rather spend my gas on roach, hydra, infestor, or anything but muta

overseers are popular in roach v. roach? well ok but im talking about mutaling here...
If he does get an overseer, then you're supposed to use mutas/corruptors to snipe them.

Anyway. because you have delayed his expansion with your first +1 speedling atk, he will most likely skimp on the overseer to pop out more infestors anyway.

But then again, i am not "high"+ Show Spoiler +

a few mutalisks on the field means like 5 dead overlords, thus giving you almost absolute map control and almost denying all scouting( You can take advantage of this in many ways)
other than that, mutalisks give him an overreaction(getting hydras) if you micro them out of fungals

sorry bad wording , i mean choke more as an area he almost always has to pass to get to your base(depending on the army sizes, it can be between the two towers on shakuras, or one of the lanes on metapolis

Muta ling works only if you are going into fast upgrades + hive -> ultra den. One guy made a guide on TL about that.

Just lings and mutas can be countered with roach/hydra/baneling or roach/hydra/infestor.

Also you rely on burrowing lings aka your opponent makes a mistake not making overseer.
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

I've been trying this on the ladder, and midgame push almost always rolls muta ling. Either banelings or infestors kill lings so efficiently, that unless they've completely neglected to set up any muta defense at their base, you get wiped out.

I only used ling muta bling before the infestor buff, it worked well. But since the patch i've won like every game where i went roach infestor against a muta player. As soon as they want to use their mutalisk for anything other than defense you can catch them with a fungal. And then a few more. Bye bye 1000+ gas muta ball.

Sorry man but I feel mutaling simply doesn't work in ZvZ.

The fact you delay speed is extremely dangerous and don't try and say 'you can micro away from fungals', he can spread out his infestors and once he catches you with one fungal if he has three other fungals your whole flock is dead.

All decent Zergs take an overseer with their army in ZvZ anyway so don't rely on him not having detection to use your lings.

I appreciate the fact you've really explored this strat but mutas in ZvZ are pretty ineffective IMO unless they are COMPLETELY unscouted, then they can do significant damage.
