so... critique the replay please i dont know why i didn't win this game... it felt like i was doing everything right. i killed his hatcheries over and over... i just couldn't keep up with his macro. really doesn't feel fair. maybe i HAVE to go less gates and void rays to go with the collossi? is that like the only way u can win?
if it matters i would be like 2900-3k diamond but now there is masters so it kinda screws with ratings

(ok clearly i didn't do everything right but i mean the major things. i can't believe how badly i hurt him over and over w/o it seeming to matter)

after watching the replay myself im guessing i need to just cool it on the aggression and be more methodical about expanding and building up a death ball myself?
it just seems so lame :/

ok I watched through your replay and here are, to me, the big reasons you lost. and they are significant. you didnt lose this one by inches, IMO, you got slaughtered.
1. You gave him 2 early game armies, sentries and all. You want to keep those early units alive as long as possible, especially the sentries. You way, way over committed. Twice. 2. Your transition out of gateway only units was WAY to slow. He had hydras out so long before your colossus that you barely survive the attack on your gold base. You have to prepare your new units before they arrive at your front door. You can just assume he is going to go out of pure roach, otherwise he outright loses. You wanted to go colossus, which is great against hydra roach, but you needed to do it earlier enough that he doesnt have a large window where he has a huge amount of hydras and all you have is zealot/sentry/immo/stalker. You HAVE to minimize these windows or you will lose. 3. You seem to not micro your super expensive late game death army at all. Where are your forcefields to keep his ground units away from your colossus? You had a few sentries (although not nearly enough, as explained earlier), you could have at least put a few down. I saw you hand him your colossus in the big battle. Like 6 corrupters sat over your big death ball and killed all your colossus uncontested. Put your stalkers on a separate control group, forcefield his stuff back and focus down those corruptors. The longer your colossi stay alive, the further ahead you get as the battle goes on as that splash damage starts to pile up.
Im sorry but you at no point deserved to win this game. You were out macroed, out microed and strategically out executed. I dont see a problem with the strategy itself.
btw I think if you get a few colossus out earlier when he is hydra heavy, you win regardless of the first two issues.

well it feels like if i go collossus earlier that lets him macro up to a point where... well he has all the drones he wants for the rest of the game and like 4 bases
also if he is going mutas then wtf? i didn't get the robos until i knew he was going roaches because mutas are so likely
your 3rd point doesn't really make any sense. i had like 1 sentry, i don't think 2 forcefields are going to do anything at all in those big battles. as for "letting" him kill my collossus, my stalkers can either try to kill his 8+ corruptors or they can fight the roaches and hydras right in front of me. it seems like the collossi were going to die anyways so why would i try to kill the corruptors and let my whole army die instead of killing the roach/hydra?
and yeah, i lost the sentries... but what are u telling me to do? just not attack? i still did a ton of damage with that attack, i disrupted his mining and killed more in resources than i lost. it's not like i can run away once im outnumbered, i can't run all the way back across the map when sentries move slower than the roaches.
i think your point is just what i was expecting, and that when im this far away i should just be macroing up and getting the proper "death ball" type army, which would mean i shouldn't risk my sentries at all. it's not fair to say i "overcommitted" when im in his base doing huge damage and my only other options are to 1.) not commit at all or 2.) lose my army trying to run away. now if u were to tell me to say, not attack, and instead just poke the watchtowers, i could see that as a reasonable point.

Your probe count stopped at 50 for about 10-15 game minutes even as your gold got up. That hurt a lot.

I am in a lower league than you; gold 28. (Whatever that means to you.) So I won't go into unit compositions, as my opponents are quite different from yours. (Although I usually go heavy colossus/stalker vs heavy roach/hydra with corrupters; if engaged with a roach/hydra/corrupter comp, I send my colossus relatively far back, and micro my stalkers back, to take as many shots as possible at the corrupters, while making the roach/hydra run after the stalkers=less damage to my stalkers.)
I just have one question, and one tip for you: Q: Why do you not have your Robo's in a control group? You only had 2 control groups all game. Tip: I always have a Observer patrolling between the enemies possible expos(usually 1 obs per 2 expos), so I can see his expo relatively early. This tells me obvious things. And you had one of your two robos unused several times and definitely had the resources for a obs. Also, I send a zealot to each of the xel'naga towers regularly. Sure he may engage with stronger units, but those towers are critical IMO.
Everyone feel free to criticize my suggestions/methods, as I am sure you will.

honestly, you should have stuck with sentries.... you never seemed too enthused to use sentries and basically abandoned them after a couple of attacks, but as long as he stays on lair tech you need stalker sentry colossus, it's that simple.
you were behind on upgrades, but i'm sure you know this and will try to correct it next game..... the only other thing that really seemed like a problem for me was taking the gold so early, the gold bases have a nice appeal but it's an incredibly difficult base to defend, you would be much better suited walling off the third above the gold forcing all entry to the third to be through your natural, it's simply a stronger option that will let you macro more easily instead of committing to tons and tons of cannons. the gold was also a bit late, but what can you do.

travis Im not sure why you would ask for advice if you a. justify to yourself all the reasons the criticism is wrong instead of actually considering it you and just thinking you played it right and b. you've already decided what the answer is.
the speed at which you transition is a delicate issue and hard to master. but you were too slow, and your gateway army got killed by his hydras. again, the issue is that you arent doing anything to minimize the time window where he can just come and kill you.
at some point, youre just going to have to figure out how to read your opponent and make a best guess about what is coming next and not worry about the other issues. a muta switch would suck for you but coming off the roaches which have three gas upgrades and cost gas themselves it's going to be significantly delayed so it's more likely for him to add in hydras since they cost half as much gas and work well with roaches. he didnt have a ton of spinecrawlers or speed zerglings to tip you off to mutas, either.
as far as point 3 goes, if you had not lost the sentries early you would have had them later. I mentioned in point 1 you gave him your early game army twice. if he has a great big roach army that will roll your units unless you have some buildings to help you zone him, then it's not a good time to move out. but you moved all the way across the map and into the open area in front of his nat. twice.
"theyre going to die anyway so I might as well not try to keep them alive" is not the right attitude to have with your colossi, too. I would try and keep them alive, personally. again, the more attacks they get off, the better off you are going to be.
I dont really know what to tell you. I told you what I saw watching the replay. I can understand you not agreeing with me though. But dont just dismiss what I say with instant excuses.
