Whenever I spawn vs random, I have no idea how to open. My usual build vs P is 14 pool, 15 hatch. My usual build vs T is 15 hatch FE, and my usual build v zerg is 14 pool roach expand. In all cases I'll scout at 14.
If it's an extremely small map (ie steppes) then I might be allright, but really, I'm thrown. There are some pro players who are of the opinion that you NEED to open 15 hatch vs a 2 rax, but opening 15 hatch vs toss and (especially) zerg is unsafe. Early pools are pretty prevalent zvz and will destroy a 15 hatch, so how do you cope?
Thanks for any help, I'm dreading every random opponent, especially on LT or metal.

If it's a smaller map, I usually just scout with my 9 drone. If it's a bigger map, however, I like to do a 14 gas 14 pool and get quick speedlings. I usually poke around a little bit or look for any proxy pylons, and then if it's against protoss or terran I expand. Against zerg I like to get a banelings nest and just try to out-micro.

Ret talks about opening ZvZ with 15 hatch into speedling/roach
If you're not sure how to open because you're not sure about race, you really do just need to scout earlier. Start treating random as it's own race with it's own set of threats, and you'll do fine. It's not as if scouting a worker or two early will cost you the game.
