User Streams: an update
July 31st, 2009 00:26 GMT
As of this moment while I'm writing this news post, it's been exactly 4 months since the first Mogulus/LiveStream link popped up on TL.
Very quickly they snowballed in popularity, with over 700K views on our little interface today. It's all gone ridiculously fast, so that's why it's time for clarification on a few issues that have popped up.
The good news
Kentor has been doing a nice job embedding the LiveStreams in 640x480 resolution. Since this has proved to give a far superior viewing experience, SonuvBob is working as we speak on giving you the option to select this resolution in the TL embedded streams as well.
While most of the SC videostreams are on LiveStream.Com, we are able to support most other streaming websites too if requested. If you want your Justin.tv / UStream or another stream added, just let us know in the recently added User Stream Feedback thread in the Website Feedback forum.
Also, Disco coded a nice application to manage specific streaming alerts
If you have any other suggestions for our streaming interface, please put it in the same thread.
Some clarifications
- First of all, if you want a stream added to TL's interface, just create an announcement thread in the Broodwar forum and PM SonuvBob with a link to it. SonuvBob will give you access to your own streaming interface and move your announcement thread to the stream discussion section. Please get your stream verified asap if you get added! This will allow more than 50 viewers to tune into your stream simultaneously. This involves contacting the LiveStream.com staff, contact me for more information.
- If you have any problems setting up your stream, or with the interface on LiveStream.com, please post your problem in this thread. Please always read the ENTIRE thread before posting. 90% of the problems you're going to encounter have been encountered (and solved) by other people before. Do not PM me if you don't find the answer, I have less experience with these programs than most people helping others in that thread.
- Like most of you have probably already figured out, streams that appear with a star in the User Streams page are featured streams. These appear under the Calendar when they're live. Please don't PM us asking to get featured. You will get featured if we like the quality of your stream, and we do tune in & monitor every stream. Also, you'll find us quicker to feature a stream if live commentary is provided, as we believe this doubles the entertainment value as well as educational value.
To streamers [PLEASE READ]
- A lot of you tend to forget to list your stream as Offline/VODs when you're not broadcasting anymore. Please don't put your stream on Online mode unless you're really streaming live. The VOD mode is appropriate if you either are looping prerecorded VODs in your LiveStream AutoPilot, or have VODs in your On-Demand section.
- The description you provide can either be your 'daily topic' or a permanent description, but please don't let it get outdated. Don't say you're going to train TvZ when you're BGH'ing.
- If you have a lot of viewers, your LiveStream chat can start to lag your stream. You can prevent this by clearing the chat room in your LiveStream Studio after each game. If it gets too bad, you can just disable the chat completely.
- We are aware that chat moderation is an annoying issue for the popular streaming channels. We request you add the TeamLiquid account on LiveStream as a moderator of your channel so we can help you kick people out while you're playing a game. All TeamLiquid staff members have access to this account, so most of the time annoying/spamming people will be dealt with. If you find that certain TL staff members are active on your stream under their own names, feel free to contact them through PM on TL and ask them to perform moderation duties. We're all willing to help.
- If you're still keen on merging StarCraft sounds with your Microphone sounds, Grobyc made a guide to Virtual Audio Cables that can get it to work.
- If you're still experiencing lag problems when streaming, either CPU or connection related, please read all the comments in this thread. There's been a lot of possible solutions suggested, and a lot of these provide great improvements.
A little thank you
There's been a few people that really deserve a little word here:
- SonuvBob: for implementing a TL project in a record time. MiR never went faster. Someone made a topic, a few days later SonuvBob had it all coded and working. - wonkman and Grobyc: for making additional guides to achieve specific results when streaming. - Mystlord, konadora and many others: for providing a reliable stream for every single pro event there is. - All the other current streamers: for providing entertainment and advice to such a big userbase. I know I've wasted multiple hours watching streams and enjoyed the experience.
I'll just finish this newspost with an image of the SC community winning the internet once again:

Awesome, thanks for the update and info. I can't believe how popular they are...
|
|
I love these streams, tx for the update and tx for posting the original howto in the first place.

I'm so happy that this livestream thing popped up. Now there's a reliable stream every night! It took 6 years, but finally it's possible to look forward to the games and know that there will be a way to watch.

I had been waiting for this technology to become commonplace and well implemented and it finally has. Pretty amazing. And thanks Rage for the update on the scene.
Also, in the picture in the OP of tl streams winning the internet, does anyone know what that 'physics' thing is in the taskbar?
|
Wow, I thoght that this would blow over but I am pleasently suprised that it didn't. Go TL <3

Live Stream is definitely the best thing to happen to teamliquid / esports ever. I expect to see thousands of people watching the featured players at teamliquid streaming themselves in SC2.
Hopefully some people take advantage of being able to commentate the korean leagues live in the future.

Nice write up, and I have been amazed by the quick growth of live streams myself. It has just become to seem like it has always been there, a staple in TL's website.
|
These streams are wonderful. I love every single one of them!
|
And thus everyone in all of Teamliquid has prevailed and no one has to go without a stream once more.

woot!

A big thank you to all the streamers.
edit:
and all those mentioned in the OP, too.

I set the embedded thing to 640 wide for now. It breaks the layout a bit, but I doubt anyone cares. :p
|
Thank all streamers! Making my life happier when watching live events ^^
|
There has always been a tingly feeling you get when watching things live, whether its music/ sports/e-sports. These streams are fantastic
|
Thank you to all you streamers, esp kona and ret!

how do you get the stream added to the website? http://www.livestream.com/skryoo1004 this dude (semi progamer in 2004-2005) was trying and a couple people were trying to help him. I think he ended up pming a mod to get it added. (still not added yet)

SC RAPES LIVESTREAM . PNG <3

I personally think that chat should awlays be disabled during live games because it kills the live reports threads. The threads just dont feel the same anymore.

How do you add someone to your production team?
|
Thanks for the streams, for providing me with entertainment with Korean leagues, as well as improving my own game and gaining insight by watching better players.

Live report threads are much shorter now. But chat's better because you can respond to someone so much faster. Plus, you won't get banned by a TL moderator. Chats in livestream is good as long as there's less than 150 people in the stream.

My posts per week have gone down significantly because of the stream as well ;P
I am sure most of my posts are pretty terrible though so maybe thats a good thing.

These streams are kickass, they are so much more fun then following live report threads because you have 50 (I guess more now) TLers screaming to increase the hype even more.

Yea, the streams really made life events that much better.
|
lol@ the name 'SC rapes livestream'
|
Thanks to the other streamers and TL staff who help keep it together
Going to have to do some streaming soon. Last time was a little while back.
|
Would it be possible to implement something that would let you favorite a few streams, so that they would show up where the featured streams do when they are online?

Thanks for the update RaGe, and also a huge thank you goes out to everyone who is involved with running and publicizing these awesome streams. This service has allowed me to watch countless hours of FPVODs and live SC events that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

this has been one of the greatest developments in SCBW that I can think of.. nice of tl.net to embrace it and really make it that much more usable!
|
I love the user stream section of teamliquid! by far one of the coolest features on this site
|
SonuvBob, if you ever visit the Netherlands and swing by here, I'll buy you a beer on a job well done!
Thanks to all involved getting all these streams up, you're awesome!

That screenshot example is really really cool
great job tl, for providing a service that most people find useful on a weekly, if not daily basis, and exposing more people to the starcraft userbase. I can honestly say that this is the best/most useful thing that I've seen happen to the bw scene since iccup/lan latency.
|
I love the image at the end.
Also, thank you very much for streams. Especially for pro events, it's really great.
|
Thanks : Mystlord, Konadora, Topstarcraft, Bolks, Orange_TV, all VLC link, QuickStriker, Soliren, rangirlsc, eatmyshorts5, rushz0rz, etc. !!!
|
These streams are the new way of life...
|
|
Thanks guys, this is such a blessing to have.
|
Sometimes the live encoder actually fails to initate the connection, and people don't really see it when they start up their stream, so they might be playing unaware that the stream is down.. atleast it has happend to me twice.
|
I applaud the implementation of the livestream by TL, very innovative and fresh thinking! It almost feels like web 3.0, i think this is the beginning of great new stuff in the future.. Keep up the good work!
|
those streams are great, they even work good at 500 kb/s connection which i unfortunately have atm ><

It's amazing just how far we've come. These streams are such a good feature to watch and learn.
|
Why are some of the streams so much more clear than others resolution wise? Is it because of the settings or their computers?
|
because of the output resolution.
|
thanks for the update, i appreciate it =D
|
I stumbled upon the live streams through TL's main page. I had never used a livestream before and didn't even know that there were services out there doing this. The way TL has done it is SO user friendly. I really enjoy watching Lz's stream and Shauni's stream. Jake is so funny to listen to the way he talks to himself and randomly sighs all the time. So awesome! :D
|
Yay, these user streams from livestream is quickly expanding so fast like Protoss FE!!! :D
And as there are so many livestreams now, all of us have options to go to these livestream live and online most of the time as we always see at least one of the live!!!!!! I think RaGe here really did revolutionized the life, hobby, and ways of TL by having people suddenly coming here one day, seeing RaGe's livestream, then copy it to their one which is the case for me and many of us today. Just like how the concept of Protoss FE forge cannons were invented by this one player and then everyone started copying it! So mad props and thanks for RaGe with the guide and help to allow me to stream successfully and how I am today! ^_^
However, that being said, I do feel that because of this sheer amount of people in livestream, there will be the case where we will notice how some have lower quality than others (eg. no sound and etc) and people will be choosing favorites over other streams when multiple are formed (eg. Konadora's stream of 300 vs my stream of 50). I guess this is to be expected as the quality and the amount of effort will bring more audience but I am going to see that a lot of us (like 90% of us) won't ever reach even 50 unless for rare occasions (eg. me hosting proleague). But I like small audience and less spamming so I'm all good! ^_^ (even though some of us probably feel uneasy about this...)
|
Definantly the best thing that has happend to e-sport since HLTV for CS and lan latency for SC.

Yes I did read the op. I didn't find it. Care to point it out to me rather than asking "did you read the first post"? If someone just joined I dont think they can't create a new thread. I forgot to mention that as well.

I did use the search function. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah amazing job on implementing this into the site so fast. To claim that TL is not the undisputed king of starcraft websites after the addition of Liquipedia and the livestreams is nothing short of insulting.
Keep up the good work guys.

I agree.

Still having my audio problem.
I've been googling and trying to fix it for some time now. For some reason, I can't get stereo mix to show up at all. Also, no luck following this VAC guide (I used Strykers work around, sound worked but I couldn't hear anything).
I can get Stereo Mix to show up in FLME under audio as: Realtek HDA Primary Input -> (FLME Settings) Pin Line Volume -> Stereo Mix
The sound works fine, but every 2 seconds doubles in volume (after about 10 seconds it'll blow your eardrum out).
|
Well, I've given up trying to fix it.
Anyone have any suggestions on cheap sound cards to pick up?
|
Thanks so much to all who have worked on getting LiveStreams up (programmers, TL admins, streamers). I have really enjoyed being able to watch some great players live.
|
i really wish this would work... i downloaded the 5.00 camtasia for vista to try and stream but my size always comes out small and never shows the entire stream.... trying to download 4.02 now and see if this will remedy the problem
