Semifinals Recap
Finals Preview

Sixteen months ago a streaking Protoss from Samsung made the MSL Finals. His opponent? The Revolution. We all know what happened: a tension-filled series that came down to a few critical mistakes (dragoon range) in the fifth and deciding game. It was Bisu's second consecutive MSL win, and the Revolutionist Bonjwa train chugged happily along.

However, over the past year, it was derailed by injury, team transfer, or simply bad play. Bisu lost his way and never truly lived up to the astronomical hype his blitzes through the GomTV MSLs earned him. Our fans wanted a Protoss Ma Jae Yoon, a dominant StarCraft god whose play was only matched by his aura. Bisu made three straight MSL finals and appeared in multiple OSL semis, but it was never enough. This nineteen year old boy could very well be the greatest Protoss player in all of history, but was still labeled an underachiever, despite this comparison:

Individual League Standings
Bisu: 2 win (3rd pending), 1 runner up
Nal_rA: 2 win, 2 runner up
Stork: 1 win, 3 runner up
Reach: 1 win, 3 runner up
Garimto: 2 win

If Bisu wins this next one, he'll have the most Protoss individual starleague wins and also be tied for the most finals appearances.

He faces Stork's little brother. Both finalists enter with brilliant 8-1 records, having easily dispatched every opponent in their way. Yet only one of these finalists "matter". Like July in Ever08, Bisu's resurgence has inspired hope in the fans of the "golden days", before twelve hour practices made parity and 55% winrates the norm. We as fans are tremendously lucky to have two great individual league storylines: Stork in the OSL and Bisu in the MSL.

The Club Day Online MSL began in September with 32 players. Eighty games later, we're down to our final two.

Revenge of the Bird
(P)JangBi 3-1 (P)Kal

Jangbi's PvP style is very much like Stork's: it's predicated on impeccable macro. However, like Stork, he is decisive and diverse in his strategical choices. He commits to his strategies. When he is daring, he is extra daring, and when he's conservative, there are zero holes. It's his opponent's job to figure out what he'll do.

Game One @ Medusa
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Both players opened gate-robo reaver obs expo. Kal sacrificed three goons to snipe Jangbi's first reaver:

After a brief macro period, Jangbi was caught halfway up Kal's back natural ramp, and as a result lost the fight:

The slippery slope of modern PvP put Kal well ahead in the next fight, with over a group of units left over. In the process, Kal took a third base.

Miraculously, Jangbi was able to break contain. Kal's goon-heavy army was crushed by Jangbi's more efficient archon zealot templar mix.

Jangbi took a third and relentlessly dropped Kal's back natural and third base:

This swung the game in Jangbi's favor and he eventually broke Kal's natural and main:

An amazing comeback for Jangbi, who was quite behind at one point. This game showed how quickly things can change in PvP. If Kal had made an extra round of zealots instead of dragoons or a few more templar he wins this easily.

Game Two @ Destination
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Both players chose to open standard. The first action was Kal storm dropping Jangbi's main, getting a decent number of probe kills.

As a result, Kal was ahead economically, but was stormed to death in the first battle due to his templars being used in the raid.

However, Kal's econ advantage showed, and his next few waves of units overwhelmed Jangbi's storms and took out Jangbi's third:

Kal took his own third and eventually steamrolled Jangbi's army.

A solid and decisive win. It would have played out differently had Kal's storm drop failed. Like game one, this game showed how PvP can hinge on something as "minor" like running probes a split second late.

Game Three @ Athena 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Kal had the momentum going into this game, and it seemed he had the upper hand when he contained Jangbi at his main ramp with three gate goon versus Jangbi's two gate reaver obs.

However, Jangbi uses his quicker tech to drop reavers at Kal's nat. While this didn't kill very many probes, Jangbi was able to force several of Kal's goons to defend and used this distraction to break out.

Behind in tech and units, Kal was getting desperate. His attempt at picking off Jangbi's reavers ended in disaster:

Jangbi followed up with a reaver drop in Kal's main and a successful attack at Kal's nat.

Kal's FPV showed him targeting observers and pushing Jangbi back with DTs. But it was too little too late, and Jangbi's superior unit count prevailed once another obs arrived.

It was clear Jangbi had practiced against the ramp contain situation, and he executed the drop / breakout maneuver brilliantly.

Game Four @ Byzantium 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Up 2-1, Jangbi gambled with proxy gates in the middle of the map while Kal went for the standard gate assim. Kal unluckily scouted west instead of north, and did not see the gates until too late.

The game turned into a micro war, and while Kal did a decent job of keeping his one dragoon alive, he was unable to kill Jangbi's zealots before their numbers became too large.

Jangbi pylon prisoned Kal's second dragoon, taking it out along with Kal's only gateway.

Kal was left with one cannon, one red health dragoon, and an inferior economy against five zeals. Jangbi moved in and finished him off.

I'm not sure if Jangbi would have done this strategy had he been down 1-2, but his proxy was a calculated gamble, executed perfectly at the right time in the series.

Jangbi advanced to the finals in a series that was much closer than the score indicated. Kal was ahead in three of the four games, and the final game was 50-50 bad luck scouting. An unfortunate way to exit the MSL, but that's PvP. Jangbi's win avenged Stork's loss to Kal in the quarterfinals. It was an impressive win given Kal's recent Proleague Ace success. Apparently Kal's 7-3 voodoo record against Stork did not apply to all Samsung players.

Viva La Revolución
(P)Bisu 3-1 (P)free

I know I said last week that this series was the "true finals" but I was wrong. Jangbi's PvP looked considerably better than Free's. Bisu is Bruce Lee climbing the temple in "Game of Death". His opponents become harder and harder with each passing round, but Bisu continues to truck over them with startling ease.

Game One @ Athena 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Free was going to open standard robo obs reaver. I knew this. The announcers knew this. The booth girls knew this. If we all knew Free would open standard, Bisu certainly did as well. Accordingly, Bisu did the most greedy, abusive one gate core expand build he could, adding two gates after the nexus.

As a result, Bisu's expansion was warped in before Free's was even started, and Bisu was adding his sixth gate and third base as Free was adding his third and fourth gates. Free's only way back was to exploit his slightly faster tech, but Bisu moved in and traded his entire goon army for two of Free's reavers:

Losing the second reaver was a micro mistake by Free. He did not need to drop it and did not pick it up fast enough. Perhaps he forgot the reaver was low health. Regardless, the error closed the only window Free had to take back the game.

The next battle pitted Bisu's larger goon zealot force against Free's dragoons and two reavers. Bisu's econ and gateway advantage proved too much:

Free was completely outsmarted and out-executed this game, and it set the tone for the rest of the series. Next time Free plays a best of five, you can bet that his opening build won't be so transparent.

Game Two @ Medusa
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Bisu opened robo obs reaver and Free opened four gate goon. Four gate goon automatically dies to dark templar, but the PvP build order gods were on Free's side. Four gate goon against two gate robo should be an easy Free win.

Except Free didn't win. His attack came slightly early, but his eight goons and one zeal still should have beaten Bisu's six goons and two zeals, especially given Free's extra rallied gates:

However, Bisu used his probes and warped a front pylon to draw fire, barely holding.

This bought time for Bisu's reaver to complete, and he set up a defense that Free couldn't penetrate.

Seeing no robotics in Free's main, Bisu proceeded toward dark templar and Free tapped out when he saw Bisu drop two of them outside his main.

Just amazing defense by Bisu. This game defied the laws of PvP. It was scissors beating rock, one of those rare situations in PvP where only the absolute best can come out on top. Yes, Free got antsy and attacked early. Yes, if Free micro'd better or waited one more round of dragoons, he would've been able to break through. But only someone as good as Bisu could hold in a situation like this. Amazing, amazing defensive micro from the Revolutionist.

Game Three @ Destination
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
Bisu opened proxy 9-gate at Free's natural, and then successfully manner pyloned him:

While this is a bold strategy that fit a player up 2-0, Bisu erred in attempting to outmicro Free's zealots and probes. This was a poor choice because Free is simply one of the best at lower tier unit micro. Bisu needed to vastly outmicro his opponent for this 9-gate proxy to succeed, and that just was not going to happen with Free defending.

Bisu made five zealots out of that one gate but was only able to kill six probes. One cool moment was one of Free's zealots getting three kills with three consecutive hits on Bisu's harassing red health zeals.

Bisu did not do the damage he needed and was behind going into midgame. Both players opted for dark templars, but Free was able to secure his natural earlier with cannons. Bisu barely held off the DTs, using probes and units to block while his cannons warped in.

Bisu took his third while storm dropping, but Free ran probes instantly. Had Bisu picked a better angle to fly in, he might have been able to get some. Behind in macro, Bisu pulled probes to defend his third, but was unsuccessful.

Down a base, Bisu took his back natural but twice was caught with his army out of position during Free's attacks. Left with no options, Bisu gambled and countered Free's third, taking out the nexus:

However, once Free's army returned, Bisu realized there was nothing he could do, and typed out.

Free did a very good job of defending the early zealot harass and subsequently preserving his economic lead.

Game Four @ Byzantium 2
+ Show Spoiler [Show Summary] +
In a similar situation as Jangbi last series, Bisu wanted to end it early and went for fast DTs. Free opened four gate goon rush again, this time proxying three gates.

Unfortunately for Free, DTs beat a mass goon timing attack. Free's four dragoon and one zealot faced off against three defending goons as Bisu's DT traveled across the map. Free killed a lot of Bisu's probes before freshly produced dark templar defended, but it didn't matter how many probes Bisu lost as long as his DT could take out Free's main.

Bisu's single DT was already at Free's ramp when the cannons were started, but with some miraculous probe micro, Free was able to "confuse" the DT for an amazing 22 seconds so a cannon could warp in. It was truly one of those I-can't-believe-it moments:

Free's "Great Probe Wall" was a cute trick, but ultimately it didn't matter. Bisu was too far ahead, and Free had to absurdly rally back to his main from his proxy gates. The game turned into pseudo elimination race where Bisu's goons hammered Free's nexus outside the range of his cannons, while Free's goons countered into Bisu's main.

Bisu successfully defended with probes and freshly made goons. When Free lost his nexus, he typed out.

After two seasons of slumping, Bisu was back in the finals. No MSL Bonjwa candidate has ever been able to win an MSL several seasons after his period of dominance. Bisu will also attempt to become the first Protoss with three individual titles.

(P)Bisu vs (P)JangBi
+ Show Spoiler [Show Stats] +
Player / Matchup / Last 10 / Last 3 Months / Head-to-Head
(P)Bisu / PvP / 7-3 / 10-4 / 0-0
(P)JangBi / PvP / 7-3 / 7-3 / 0-0

First, a bit of history. This is the second time a Samsung player has faced an SK Telecom player in a final this season. The first Samsung player to win an individual league was Stork a few weeks ago. The last time an SKT1 player won a starleague was iloveoov back in 2006. Before that, you have to go all the way to iloveoov in 2004. Usually, these big player purchases by SKT1 or KTF don't work out (see GoRush, July, etc.) But the two most recent ones, Luxury and Bisu, have been quite successful. Fantasy, Best and Bisu lead a T1 resurgence that has had individual league success but thus far has not carried over to Proleague.

Both players enter the final playing very well in every matchup. Since September, Jangbi is a red hot 17-3. Bisu is also doing well at 22-8 (16-4 in last 20). However, when examining their opponents, Bisu's list is notable stronger with series against Hwasin, Calm, Free, and FBH, while Jangbi has played relative cream puffs Yarnc, Shine, and Memory.

In his series with Kal, Jangbi relied on superior tech unit control and army composition. His armies were more tech-based, because his storms and reaver control were notably better than Kal's. Unfortunately, Bisu has immaculate reavers and storms as well, so Jangbi will have to find other ways of gaining an advantage. While I'd give Jangbi the slight edge on macro, both players macro well enough that if one secures a significant lead, the other will not be able to recover without a major mistake from his opponent.

SK Telecom T1 house. Best is 4-1 since his semifinals loss against Stork. Best continuously loops the VOD of the Stork OSL win over his teammate Fantasy, a combination of jealousy, anger, and determination in his eyes. It's 6:00 AM.

Best: (bursting into Bisu's room) Let's practice some PvP.
Bisu: (groggily, still half asleep) wuhh
Best: Let's go practice for your MSL Final.
Bisu: It's 6 AM.
Best: (throws cup of water into Bisu's face) Let's go.
Bisu: I'm up, I'm up. Geez.

They walk to the practice room. Half the computers are missing monitors.

Bisu: What happened here?
Best: Fantasy and I burned all Samsung products.
Bisu: Let me go eat breakfast first...
Best: (not allowing him to leave) No. Practice now. Beat Samsung. Eat after.

Samsung KHAN house. Stork is 1-2 since his OSL Finals win. Jangbi wakes up early to practice for the MSL Final. It's 9 am.

Jangbi: Stork, wanna practice?
Stork: (hungover on couch, talking in his sleep) ... I'd like to thank my coach and teammates...
Jangbi: Dude wake up. Let's practice.
Stork: (awake now) Wooooo OSL Finals man!
Jangbi: Finals is two days away, I need your help!
Stork: Wanna watch VODs of my win!?!?
Jangbi: ...

Jangbi leaves for the practice room. In one corner, Ever)P(TT is playing DotA. In another corner, Frozean and FBH are trying on outfits while by.great practices.

Ever)P(TT: Jangbi I'll practice with you!
Jangbi: I'm fucked.

Like Bisu-Free, The biggest factor in this series is experience. This is Jangbi's first final, and we've heard that he does significantly better in practice matches than TV games. Pressure affects Jangbi, and there is no bigger stage than a final. Bisu, on the other hand, is pressure-proof at this point, having been there so many times before.

But the biggest reason I think Bisu will win is that I'm a believer and a romantic. I believe he wants this win more. A Bisu win would re-invigorate the fans just like July did in Ever 2008. We want to believe in mythical characters and that a player who is greater than the game. Jangbi winning would be great for him and for Samsung, but a Bisu win would be legendary for all progaming fans. Bisu 3-2.

Bisu 3-2.

I think I like Hot_Bid's MSL writeups more than Plexas OSL writeups simple because of Hot_Bid's inclusion of "conversations"

Halfway through reading, I wondered who the author was. A quick scan for typoes yielded only witty remarks. Conclusion: It had to be Hotbid.

Excellent writeup, as usual.

That's short-sighted. People said the same thing about Bisu when he beat rA in gomtv1, blaming him for denying a holy war.

Bisu's not gonna be the mythical protoss bonjwa, if history is any indication this is probably his last dance. As for Jangbi though I think he has a very good shot at becoming that p-using bonjwa. The timing works out. He came after the initial period of protoss renaissance, therefore he was able to benefit tremendously whilst still having room to grow.

This would've been the point I addressed in my proper final thread if carnac wasn't an ass and closed it without thinking. Yeah it's possible I'm shooting myself in the foot here calling the win for Jangbi, but his winning will definitely be more significant for starcraft overall than Bisu winning.

-ps and I think Bisu's team transfer actually helped him avert a huge slump into a relatively tame one.

Bisu is blessed. He had the honor of losing to Stork in the OSL and now he has the chance to lose to Stork Jr.

With so many Bisu fans here, Kleenex can thank TL for their stocks doubling tomorrow.

Bisu was the closest thing we had to a Protoss bonjwa. Certainly closer than any high Jangbi will ever reach.

This would've been the point I addressed in my proper final thread if carnac wasn't an ass and closed it without thinking.

1. Your thread was created five days after the original Club Day finals thread was made and wasn't any different. Carnac was 100% correct to close it. Don't call Moderators names for simply doing their job correctly, consider this a warning.

2. It's not like you can't post these points in that thread. You are allowed to post in threads you don't create.

1. You can't say what hasn't happened. How do you know jangbi will never reach multiple titles? Nobody knew Bisu was gonna take 2 msls when he beat rA. They bitched, moaned, and gave him up for dead.

2.There was no original finals thread. It was a just a poll labeled "msl final" and was made 1 week before the games happen. Carnac closed it without a thought of the effort I put into formatting my thread with no html support. That's 100% correct? And he had the nads to make a personal statement against me in a pm, for what? Being a contributor?

That's not correct at all.

Glad to see Bisu restoring attention to the real greatest Protoss player of all time, after all that Stork madness warped SC reality. It's only fitting that the only P to ever have the Maestro's number (before he started truly slumping Savior basically lost more times to Bisu than all other Protoss players combined) gets to 3 MSLs himself.

The conversations were LOLtastic. As far as the matchup goes though, I'd really like JangBi to win. However, I can't really see that happening. I don't like to admit it, but Bisu, despite his slump, is still very much Bonjwa material.
