Fuck that JP lynch was so bad for us thinking back on it. If we had just switched to even somebody like HW, we would have saved our medic (who happened to have PT + Ecc as top suspects) and me (with Ecc and PT as top suspects after JP).

Of course even better would have been to just lynch Eccleston. Sorry about that guys. I guess it was stupid of me to assume Ecc would be modkilled and I should have just switched us to the safe lynch. Next time I suggest hoping for a modkill somebody slap me in the face.

gg everyone and thanks hosts for hosting. it was a fun game to play and obs

I'd be quite interested to see who everyone turns out to be. Any guesses on Eccleston #2?

Doesn't matter. Wouldn't even matter if someone else had been shot. Was still an outstanding choice
Also as a correction he didn't have eccleston till day 2. But still pretty impressive.

I like how Eccleston is bad-mouthing me in the QT. My style of play is entirely legit.

what bothers me most is that the game was solved on day 1, people just did not read.

There were basically four possible candidates for scum. Eccleston, HW, H3, PT. We were very misfortunate in that both PT and Eccleston got replaced, but even so, we should have simply killed all four of them and we would have won.

Instead we had some really retarded lynches. I know I contributed considerably to that by lacking confidence/time and whatnot, but we waffled between two scum day 1, killed one and then the other just got away with literally doing nothing. His replacement carried the game for him. He played it well by pretending to understand what I was saying and throwing me off. With the number of people who thought JP was scum I legitimately believed I was just being stupid.

The other thing is that out of this group, H3 looked incredibly town. He posted really stupid shit, but based on his vote pattern, his attitude/general not-give-a-fuck posting style and his activity he basically had to be town. No matter how bad you think he is you can't lynch him for simply being bad. Unfortunately there were too many reasons to believe he was town to warrant that lynch. Between Eccleston, HW, and PT, none of them did anything and they should all have been lynched early on.

The timing on day 3 for me was pretty bad too. I legitimately had to leave before deadline and I didn't think people would swing votes on to me. However it was incredibly frustrating to see everyone basically fuck off except for McGann (and MSmith was dead) who I felt was probably the only person who was properly reading the thread.

edit: also hopefully this teaches people that roleplaying != autotown. You have to analyze motives in addition to post content. If you post garbage but it's decipherable garbage, or you do it unintentionally, then it's possible you're simply trolling/misguided town. Purposely posting meaningless garbage is different.

Secondly, someone changing his/her mind is not a scumtell and never will be.

Well, I will start with saying that this was a bittersweet victory. I honestly feel like I lost even though I won, but I'll talk about that later.

I originally saw the call for replacements when poking around the last page of various mafia games, so I sent a PM to GMarshal asking about the position without having read any of the game yet or even knowing what point in the cycle it was. I asked him if it was mafia, and he said yes, and that he was hard-up for replacements. Ultimately this meant that I knew I was in for a tough game and, realistically, I came in expecting to lose no matter what I did.

My first thoughts on catching up with the game were that I was going to end up needing to focus on getting Eccleston lynched despite the fact that he was on my team just based on his entry to the game. I did not know what that Eccleston1.0 had taken leave of the game by the time I came in. His replacement was as much a surprise to me as it was to you. I don't know if he will return, but Eccleston2.0's newb town voice and choice of writing style were a facade given how much suspicion was on his slot (you'll see this if you have/will read the scum QT) and was done tactically. Game-wise, I should have talked more about how Eccleston1.0 was scummy as hell to further improve my image, but having him around kept my slot out of the pool for lynches by the nature of how conversations played out.

A major factor for why I wrote like I did was that I needed to document my own thoughts into the thread because a) it would show I was interested and motivated to find scum and b) a way to keep track of my own thoughts so that I would have something to refer back to. That made it somewhat challenging to take stances early on until I had a better handle on the game, but I naturally fell into a position where I could safely do whatever I needed to do (see the Tom lynch for the best example, it might have been a bit more obvious to people that I was scum if they realized how well I understood his town motivation that I KNEW he was town).

My early plan was semi-related to Tom's (for nefarious purposes, though). Take out the less active, less explanatory posters with whatever ammunition I could find, while maintaining my thread presence on a regular schedule with as much detail as I could afford to give. Some of those posts during the first couple of days I was in took an hour or more to craft just perfectly. I am rather proud of how well I meshed into the town, but from the way people interacted with me I could tell very few of you ever felt comfortable calling me town.

So that's about all the review I have in terms of my own play unless there are specific questions; now to get to the part of the game where I felt that I lost.

What is decided to be townie and what isn't is based on a number of factors, but this game took out the biggest one that has (apparently recently) made its way to the forefront of TL Mafia: meta. The conversation after the game ended is a prime example of what I think needs to change in the future. If you are willing to let town get by through posting spam and trash and being a jerk, then they will. If half the town is doing it, you have two choices: learn to spot the different, or lynch the everloving shit out of them. Every. Time. The standard you walk past is the standard you set. Do you want the level of play to improve? Then you need to let people know what that standard is. And then you need to enforce it. Yes, town will lose games because of it. And your personal ban list for players you will never join a game with again will grow. That's not a bad thing. Pro SC2 players don't dick around with bronzies, why should you engage in a similar relationship?

You SHOULD have lynched my slot day two for shitty day one play. I absolutely would have lynched me in the face of a doctor claim, but of course I am me and I was mafia so that was a no-go. Nobody who wants to play mafia competitively should act like my predecessor did nor should they expect others to tolerate it, especially in a smurf game. This is part of the draw of GMarshal games that I enjoy specifically. They draw a caliber of player and a quality of play that raises the standards and expectations. That was the mindset I came into the game with.

The Wisdom of the Crowds rule is sorely needed as a standard for non-themed games, in my opinion. If there's a player who you can't stand to play with because they don't participate, don't mind their manner, don't play for their team, you can choose to Survivor 2013 them and cast a vote that can potentially get them off the island. I don't propose we make games exclusive to veterans and fantastic players by voting out all the bad people, I am saying I think the threat of not being able to participate in a competitive atmosphere if performance is lacking promotes higher level play by forcing that performance.

So how did I lose? Because I didn't get lynched when I should have been lynched. That there were people who were more scummy than me, the slot with the RP post that fucked off for three days. That should not even happen. I really feel bad that I endgamed Baker the way I did. It didn't feel good. I didn't trick him. I wasn't the towniest guy in the thread. I just took a leap of faith and flipped a coin. That's not a win for me. I feel like I stole it.

Some propositions for fixing the inadequacies of general play that I can think of:
1) Enstate GMarshal's Wisdom of the Crowds rule into more normal games. I haven't seen any other hosts pick up this rule for their setups (and I sincerely wish they would) because I feel it will force people to participate and not give up when they roll scum (aw sheeet, mafia again? /ragequit). Host by host perhaps, but I know I would be more inclined to sign up for a game with WotC versus one without.
2) Encourage sign-ups so there are 2-3 replacements available immediately at any point instead of getting lucky or spamming the Replacements thread. Delay the start until these mandatory slots are filled. Extra players for the natural tragedies that things come up IRL and you have to bounce so there are no lapses in presence on top of time to catch up with the game and account for potential non-town affiliations.
3) Absolutely do not accept that a meta of being lazy is a sign of being town. Reject this with all of your heart. Some will prefer quantity over quality, spam-heavy and all over the place versus single high quality pursuits with high focus. Lazy players are a factor to losing games. Lazy players bring neither quantity nor quality.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm starting to feel a bit more particular about the players I sign up to play games with. I don't have a metric ton of games on this site, but I do feel like part of the community and I want to see it improve and thrive. I want to see the competitive nature you all bring to the game to really shine so we get magical experiences instead of snoozefests.

The standard you walk past is the standard you set.
Just one small question: Why do you want to blow up the world?

My predictions for today: Baker will think Hurndall is possibly not scum but will end up killing him anyway on principle.

edit: PS, MSmith, if you are sciberbia, the reason I didn't guess you as sciberbia is because at least one other person mentioned the name sciberbia in the obsQT, and you said only I'd be able to guess you
