VE how do I finally graduate from newbie school? DISCLAIMER: Romanian + Show Spoiler + I'm not sure what the actual rules are regarding how many newbie games one is allowed to participate in and whatnot but I wouldn't feel right playing with actual newbies. /out

Secondly, I am confused about out of thread communication. PMs are not allowed so I assumed all conversation should take place in this thread (besides Masoners) but then there is a warning about out of thread communication, explaining, "It is common for mafia to use a medium outside of TL such as QuickTopics or IRC or Skype to communicate during the game." Does this mean out of thread communication is allowed? I didn't think so, but it's not clear to me. Why ban PMs but not QT or IRC or Skype? Time zones are a little annoying but are workable. Just put in quality posts and respond when you can. The most important thing is to be active in the game, nothing kills a game faster than no one talking or someone who abandons the game. Thanks. But getting yelled at is what I am afraid of :p I don't like to upset people.

You are correct in that all conversation should be in the thread except if your role allows it. The key in what I just said is, "if your role allows it". As you said, a Mason allows you to talk with someone through PMs. But the mafia are also able to communicate with one another (in essence, you can say that the entire mafia team are Masoners who are masoned with each other). In the olden days of mafia, the mafia team would communicate by making a group chat in irc (or using some other instant messaging service). However we had scenarios where another non-mafia player in the game would find this chat (by searching all the people in the game on irc), allowing them to know the mafia team. To solve that issue, the host of the game usually makes a QT and gives access only to the mafia team, that way nobody cannot accidentally stumble upon it. This is also handy because it's essentially a record of everything the mafia talks about (so after the game you can go back and reflect upon their actions). Lots of mafia teams will communicate on skype since most people use that (lots of players here are friends, and almost everyone who is a host is friends with me for instance) and some will still use irc.

It's obviously against the spirit of the rules but it's an interesting tactic. Imagine planting listening devices on players in IRL mafia.
