The most disturbing thing of all, beyond the ghastly sight of his skull sprinkling the floor like shattered glass, was the mute acceptance of the atrocity we had all committed. Although I felt terrified by the nature of our actions, I could not bring myself to feel a level of guilty worthy of a participant in the ruthless snuffing out of an innocent life. It didn't surprise me when Ace's card was read aloud and rather than weeping for the man we had killed for no purpose, no gain - I and eventually everyone merely shuffled off to bed with an annoyed sigh as though I had done no more than misplace my keys, or stub my toe.
