All the talk about the track being fast both here and for the Athletics makes me interested in how much improvements on speed have been influenced by better surfaces over the years. Obviously training improvements make up the bulk of it but I'm sure surfaces have got steadily quicker over time too?

The only thing more annoying than the amount of silvers we've gotten is having to hear the commentators trying to put a positive spin on it all. Sure, it's fine to hear them telling us that the Aussie only has a dig a little deeper (and s/he's definitely got the ability!) for the first couple of times, but when you're watch the men's 4s in rowing behind by a mile and the commentators saying that all they need is a little surge and we can snag the gold... it gets tiring. Dunno if you have Foxtel or not, but the swimming commentator on it is the absolute worst. "The Australian is up in FRONT!!!" and he/she turns in 5th or 6th place. Thank god I don't have Foxtel, I would have fully broken down by now. and in other news, Aussies leading from the start in the cycling, loses to the yanks in the heat. Classic. If its any consolation. The Russians and Japanese are doing a pretty good job of silver and bronze finishes. Prob better than you guys, or worse I guess depending on how you look at it. Basically, at the end of these games, I want Australia to be AT LEAST higher in the medal tally than Kazakstan. I'm not hoping for much, just that. Kazakstan is going to get some more golds. gonna be hard, wrestling is coming. Well, There's still cycling, so hopefully we can get at least one gold from that, and Hockey's looking good. and then there's hurdles, and I think we've a chance for long jump. Hockey should be in the bag easy, I'd be very surprised (and upset) if they didnt win that.
