Because if C9, TSM and Vulcun all bombed out in the group stages, it might hurt the legitimacy of the NA LCS and create less hype for the upcoming Spring Split.

Or something like that.

what a disgusting format. this is the only tournament of the year that is this international and we're supposed to see how teams stack up against each other.

except the top four teams that are seeded directly into the quarterfinals don't play any games and can possibly get 0-2'd out of the tournament.

i want to see how cloud 9 stacks up with the other teams. i've already seen all these awesome games by fnatic against the west and east. fuck this if c9 loses to fnatic. i wanted to see them play najin blacksword, omg and royal. i wanted to see how royal played against the koreans and western teams...etc

now it's possible we may never get to see these top seeded teams play against each other for another year. wtf?

Its also completely possible we will see the winner of OMG/Royal easily make it all the way to the finals, while the other side of the bracket is Sword vs SKT1 in the semis after easily beating their opponents. which makes only 1 good relevant. match at each stage, which is REALLY disappointing.

Lol, way to auto discount fnatic after group b.

Tbh the draws worked out really well in terms of maximum possible story lines.

Rematch between omg vs royal. Did omg throw last time? Or royal actually better than omg?

Eu vs na, top of both teams duking it out. No more pussyfooting around with this eu vs na hypetrain.

How good is gama bears? Are they going to be the cute iconic darkhorse? Or skt going to romp them in 20 minutes?

I will also say this wouldn't bother me if the LCS system didn't utterly squelch international competition outside of Worlds. I wouldn't care if Riot tried so hard to prevent one region from dominating if there were other events at which strong teams could show their skill on the international stage.

Which is stupid as fuck. Riot, you shouldn't allow this to be possible.

In all seriousness - that was the point, it was designed specifically to work this way. iirc Riot said the reason why they keep the byes is to avoid having one region dominate, and this is how they do it.

And I say fuck you to that.

The whole goddamn point of worlds is to find out where the other regions stand relative to each other. Why pussyfoot around it? If one region is good enough to dominate, then THE WHOLE POINT OF THE TOURNAMENT IS FOR US TO FIND THAT OUT!

EDIT: If you want to do that at Worlds fine. But then don't squelch international competition for the other 11 months of the year.

Ha, riot building a competitive tournament? Is that a joke? You should realize by now that having no booths + bo3 quarters shows how much they care about competition over other things. Also really arbitrary regionional qualifier format.

Yeah unfortunately if Worlds ended up being a sham Due to a single region being strongest, then Riots bread and butter events would be less watched. People would just watch the third party events with (maybe) C9 + (maybe)Fnatic + Korea and china.
Seems like they are making missteps at every turn as a company running leagues, and hopefully they learn from them, but they might not see them as missteps, which is what i fear.

the cool thing as a writer, is we can create and hype up any storyline regardless of the matchups. Korea vs Korea China vs China Eu vs Eu and NA vs Sea. 3 epic struggles to prove they are the best of their country, and two underdog regions trying to prove themselves to the world. ect. Its not difficult to create hype out of anything that happens in a tournament, Tournaments themselves are Hype.

I'm going to make a wild claim here:

The point of a world championship in anything is to have different regions competing against each other to determine a winner.

Note how I did not say "to show the most skill" or "to be composed of the 12-16 best teams in the world".
Only the weak link is strong enough to break the chain.

So... 1 good storyline(c9/Fnatic)?

Imo royal vs omg is solid storyline, it sucks they didn't meet up in finals to build up more hype, but considering how mysterious royal's strength are, it would be conceivable that this storyline never makes it out of quarterfinals if omg wasn't matched with royal.

Hm... Fnatic has probably used Ashe/Zyra to the most success of any team outside of C9. I wonder if that will be what they will be trying to contest for first with the picks. Puszu does fine on an alternative ADC, like Corki, but Yellowstar on Zyra is crucial, I think. Likewise, Zyra is an essential pick to Lemon too. No idea if Sneaky plays Corki.

It's a shame, the production on Worlds is actually a thousand times better than last year, but Riot had to find some other way to kill my enjoyment.

Even if Worlds had complete competitive integrity, I'd still be pissed about having no other international competition. Season 2 was way more entertaining for me due to all the LAN diversity.

since you are playing to an audience that only knows western teams and those foreign teams that played in groups, OMG vs Royal won't get that much attention.

bears vs t1 will be another faker worship session. gambit vs sword is okay, but we haven't seen sword in quite a long long time, so they'll be 'random korean team' status.

Pretty much. As far as I'm concerned, as long as the best team from each reason is represented, that's good enough. Skt is there, c9 is there, omg is there, fnatic is there. Taiwan sorta got screwed tho. Supposedly tps is better than gama bears :/

Your bias aside, you think royal has a good chance to easily beat skt?

That's the thing, having East vs. West matchups actually creates more hype than having inter-Asia matches for both the Western and Eastern audiences.

Unless C9 beats Fnatic It's already hurt the legitimacy of it, of course it probably won't change anything in terms of NA fanbase because where the fuck else are they going to go? dota?
