Anyone gotten their beta keys yet? I'm confused as to when they will ship the "top 20%" invites, at the END of this season?(Surely we won't have to wait till August) Now? Sorry if this seems short and not worthy of a topic, but I'm going into fits over here. EDIT: Seems the consensus says it's going to be 20% from LAST season, and you can check your rank through www.rankedftw.com Anyone diamond+ is about guaranteed, with the cutoff going to high platinum, Hope you get in! EDIT 2 Excalibur_Z Believes it to be top 20% MMR, so the info from the websites may be invalid. Keep praying though. [JUST GOT BETA, CHECK IT UP PEOPLE! 10 pm 4/30/2015 EST Add me up Cakez 472

The way I read it is top 20% from last season's ladder. Not sure what the criteria for "active" is though.
It would be awesome if it was everyone who was rank 20 or higher (regardless of league). Actually reward people who were active! It would also be a good way to get different levels of play in beta (as long as they actually had some ranking so you didn't have a top 20 bronze facing off vs pros - although some would like it just to play vs an idol).
I was high diamond last season, and I'm masters now. Finally something good to come out of being at a higher league. I still don't have a beta invite though.
I really wonder how this will work. I mean I'm all for it and happy about it since I would be in the top 20%, but I just can't imagine they will invite roughly 60 thousand players in one wave??? The jump just seems so big and since there is only a single server I wonder if there would be problems.

So since they use the last season, it's basically from mid plat upwards. Diamond and Master were really small so most plats would be in the top 20%.
You can use this site to check http://www.rankedftw.com/. Of course Blizzard's numbers will be somewhat different from this site or nios.kr, but it's at least a good estimation.

Dammit now I'm sad I waited until the season restarted to play. I'm comfortably in plat now but last season wasn't.
If they're doing it based on last season's rankings I'll be kinda pissed off since the ladder was broken...
I was a master's player throughout WoL but didn't really play in HotS until the last few weeks so I was stuck in gold until the ladder reset. Now I'm diamond which is top 20% but I'm pretty sure my placement in gold won't be top 20% -.-
My girlfriends account was just flagged from the Virtual Ticket. But when trying to log in we get an Error message.
"This Battle.net account does not include a copy of Starcraft 2 or has run out of game time. Please click ADD OR BUY GAME to add time or purchase the game"
Was so stoked to play tonight Apparently others are having the same issue hopefully it's fixed for my weekend off!
nice that they are using the top 20% instead of being completely random like the previous betas, hopefully they add ranked ladder soon. cant wait to play finally
I didn't get a email or anything when I got my invite. Just checked the region selector from the launcher when I logged in a couple of days ago, and it was selectable there. Maybe some have it, and don't realise?!
I'm a bit bummed by this tbh. The hots ladder will be sort of useless from now on I guess? ...and I have to wait a year or so for another shot at legit masters...

Honestly as long as LotV is not remotely balanced/interesting HotS ladder won't be deserted. I know for sure I would play some LotV games to have some idea about the state of it but as long as ravager/cyclone/eco/P in general aren't addressed I'm pretty sure I would still focus on HotS.
I had a virtual blizzcon ticket, but no lotv access yet. Altough i will be in the top 20% i dislike it that there is no communication towards virtual ticket holders.

There has been.
Iv'e been harassing blizz about it since November.
The virtual ticket waves are still going. For some fucking reason they can't do all the virtual ticket holders in 3 waves but they can do the top 20% of the total player base in 1 wave this week.....
I have 3 accounts that will get into the 20% wave. I'm annoyed that the "priority access" virtual ticket holders were going to get is irrelevant now because everybody will be getting the beta anyway. Everybody who attended blizzcon already got in, but not all virtual ticket holders did. Really not fair imo.

so you playing vs some plat is going to help? let me repeat... Actually rewarded people who play.
So you say that a Silver MMR guy who played shitload ammout of games and has no idea what he is doing in a game should be more useful for the testing purposes than a Master MMR guy who played like 10 times less? I tend to disagree, sir.
I got a beta invite on the 22nd, might have gotten it earlier though since I haven't received an email about it. I just saw that the Lotv-beta option was there in the server list. (I didn't get the beta on the first round)

To be honest 10% would've been a better bet. 20% is too broad. (Not just saying that because I'm in the top 3% )
Exactly. Do we really want plat players helping decide balance? So, instead of giving it to some guy who plays 10 ladder games a season but stays in diamond, I wish they would have rewarded that kid that's top 8 gold each season.
Also, with eco changes it might actually be beneficial to see if active lower league players would be able to grasp the changes easily (hopefully allow blizzard to try new things).

It's far fetched as fuck but that could maaaaaybe be an indication they wanna steer away from balancing the game to fit the casual and more towards the higher level player. Like I said, far fetched but a possibility I guess.

I would sort of agree if they only invited the top 5% (Masters +) and kept it that way for the whole beta. But 20% has some gold leaguers having the potential of being in the beta. I think this 20% thing is more of a way to get more data to make better choices currently they can only go off biased opinions of pros (who if an imbalance or perceived imbalance was let through could affect their livelihood)
Anyway when I get in I will be recording shit tons of data for one massive post (Like most of us will end up doing) this is the last SC2 for the foreseeable future and I want micro actual micro not click a button and cast a spell. (Another thing please take auto cast off storm)

I imagine they want to keep queue times reasonably low so people don't lose interest. MMR will do its thing and they can still get the data they need, it just means if your skill level isn't matched you'll play a platinum player instead of waiting for 20 minutes to play anyone at all.

I'm sure it's a mixture of both. Problem is if you have a player in Bronze who has played 1000 hours of HOTS, Blizzard is not going to get the gameplay data they need. Having a certain level of player competence & skill in the game is integral for balance and design

I fully agree if we're ONLY talking about having people in beta for balance.
However, they've flag several community figures (I have beta for being a community caster - have you ever heard of me?). They're also giving out beta for people that purchase Virtual Tickets (I have a friend who got beta AND DOESN'T OWN SC2!).
I'm only saying if they're not giving out beta purely for "high level balance testing" (which we can agree would only be the case if it was top 5% mmr etc), why not give it to people who have been loyal and active?
Also, to clarify, I don't mean top 20% based just on games played. I meant top 20% of each division (anyone with rank 1-20 regardless of what league it's in).
Look at all these below 20% people complaining for not getting a beta key ^^ "it is so unfair, me biggest fan. I <3 sc2" I am actually happy that I played last season after a year of break. Sure it was only 30 games until I gave up again because I despise HOTS. but it was enough to get top 5% again so I am happy.

In the initial comment he said Season 1, so my guess is, for this wave at least, it's just last season. Calculating that 20% for this season would be pretty difficult given that it changes constantly.

Ya I haven't played in a few seasons and came back during the lock (but before hearing about these invites) got placed in bronze... I guess because of the MMR decay. After killing poor bronzies and getting flamed repeatedly for maphacking etc I was playing plats and diamonds but still stuck in bronze. This season I am top diamond. Maybe they use MMR in which case I am probably in but if they use the visible ranking I guess not.

It's more like 14k
Source?
I think there are still around 300k players/accounts that get ranked each season. This seasons it's at 128k already, that's at least what http://nios.kr/ says. Of course this may not be 100% accurate, but I still don't think there are only 70k world wide.

No no, I meant, they should have announced the beta keys for the top 20% in season 1 BEFORE the season 1 ended ^^. Would have made for a nice "race to the top" event thing for beta keys.

I don't think it really awards activity if you could just do 1 placement and never drop out of Diamond...

Anyway, I was a virtual ticket holder and in masters league. No invite.
well, this is probably it for me, i guess? can't decide whether to be excited or nervous. i dunno how i'll react if i don't enjoy lotv as much as laddering hots... but then i feel like i'm one of very few people who actually still loves laddering hots lol
edit: ps sorry if this was asked but do you get an email when youre flagged?
People looking to Nios or Rankedftw for being in the top 20% who are Plat or Gold are setting themselves up for disappointment. It's almost assuredly top 20% by MMR (as though they just broke out a new league at the 20% marker). That's going to mean roughly where Diamond ends.
Just got beta :D. Was definitely in top 20%, did not receive an email or anything. Just check the regions and if you got in it should be there. Good luck to all!

wow I literally just checked my b.net account, found no invite. Went on to read this thread, then checked again and sure as hell - there was the invite. So funny!
Interesting, I got in as a top masters player who didn't play any games last season. Maybe it was top 20% MMR even if you didn't play? To be honest I'm a little confused, but not complaining.
If only I had kept playing at least one game every season to maintain my rank rather than not play for a couple of seasons. Guess I have to wait till they give out more beta keys to the general public.
I'm in ! Kinda got lucky I decided to play 30 or so games the 2 last days of season 1 after 1 year of not playing the game. I was stuck in gold though so I'm guessing it's top 20% MMR, not league or points.

And then it looks at your distribution in that league. So, say for simplicity Diamond is top 10% world, and you are rank 10 in your division of 100... you would be exaclty at top 1% on that graph.
so it makes percentage ranges off of distribution, then ranks you in that range.

Not sure if it's mentioned in the thread yet, but don't just check your emails. I didn't get an email notification, and my friend who got in the first wave said his email arrived 2-3 weeks late. Check your 'manage games' page on battle.net.

Time will tell will the changes be for better or worse. I just hope the future system will be more transparent regarding individual skill compared to others and still gives a feeling of progression. Personally I am not a fan of for example the 'Hearthstone system (with some changes)' that they took into use in Heroes of the Storm as it feels dull and grindy in practise. And most of the time not transparent at all when considerable portion of players have not grinded to their typical level in that game.

Meh I am a high Diamond level 2v2 player and I bought the virtual ticket. No invite for me so far. This is sad. Would definitly play 1vs1 in the beta. Plz Blizzard let me in.

Man, I was so worried because I left league at the end of last season out of rage not being able to get masters, but I'm in ! I hope the game I'll discover won't be as bad as I fear and that you can disable the units silhouettes behind buildings. Gl hf everyone !
I think they had the percent too broad. I'm 10-1 and I'm like mid-low master so nothing special. I'm struggling to get any useful information since my opponents are floating so much money or dying to stupid things, the only game I lost so far was a game where I was cannon rushed and then failed a ravager bust after.
I'm currently looking at fast adrenal glands + muta in ZvP and my god does it wreck face. When I've worked out a more solid BO I will post it.
Is anyone hitting a wall during the installation? It just froze up on me this morning. Can try deleting the file folder where LOTV did the partial install and reinstall?

Unranked isn't working so it's not MMR case, it's because we have to play custom games.

In fact it depends on maps. On some maps it's quite OK, even pretty, but on others man (Coda) it really feels ugly... Maybe I just have to get used to it.
On the other hand I have to say I played two games so far and that the feeling of speed is incredible. I'm positively surprised !

Custom is different than matchmaking. Ive played a couple of custom games with friends though. I'll just wait for it to get fixed I suppose.

Same. It's unplayable for me, the delay is literally 2 seconds. People from my clan have the same issues. My opponent didn't have any issues and he was from the US. The beta server is in California, right? I can usually play without noticeable lag on NA, maybe the normal server is on the east coast?
It's normal that you have lag spikes while playing from EU. Some times it runs quite fluently and sometimes it is laggy. I think it depends on the time zones and server usage.
It's not that bad that it's unplayable for me, but when I'm in pressure situations I'm left wondering why my clicks haven't worked. Probably got like a .3 delay but that's enough to feel sluggish.

Kinda disappointed with how they are distributing invites. They said 20% so I didn't really expect to get one coz im just in diamond. Honestly the game is in a much worse state than I expected. Even if the game ges balanced and new terran units + small design tweaks, I don't see any reason why we should expect inactive players to come back. All of the flaws of HOTS are still prevalent and then they added new lame stuff such as Cyclones and let's be clear here. AA removal fixes nothing. The unit is so ridiclous dumb with its max range. And Reaper ability? Seems so incredibly pointless.

is this how inactive players are feeling? Because it is incredibly far from what I am am feeling as still active hots player. You are terran right?
I think design flaws are even MORE prevalent here than in HotS. The "harass everywhere", "action all over the map" motto is obtained by making the attacker's advantage so ludicrous you just cannot play defensive anymore (not just turtle which is despised for good reasons, but even defensive play has become absurdly hard). Which sounds good, but is bad in the end, because it virtually removes all strategy and depth -and makes Protoss so weak it's funny, but that's secondary for the time being. Choosing to invest into tech has never seemed so vain. Those problems need to be addressed because a knife fight meta doesn't favor the most skilled, it just puts a lot of luck and randomness into the equations. Probably good for spectators, but absolutely terrible if you're trying to create a solid competitive game.

I think most active players will be satifised with better balance, while most inactive players want a lot more.
It's hard for me to identify areas where I can truly say "that part wasn't good in HOTS, but !@#$%^&* is it fun in LOTV".... Perhaps the exception is tier 3 splash protoss as the Disruptor is much more fun than Colossus. But toss is just fucked so much anyway, and nerfing the Collosus (and keeping the design) and still having Forcefields and an adding a active shild to the Immortal... just makes me not want to play the race at all.
Anyway, the only fun I had so far (after 12 or so) was one game with Siege Tank drops vs Ravager/Lurkers. That's a great interaction. High micro skillcap and lots of counterplay. Gimme me a lot more like that while removing all hardcounters and infitnitive kiting + redesign spellcasters such as Ravens, Ghosts and Sentries + give toss a proper core army --> I am really to evaluate LOTV once again. But untill that point, I don't see any strong reason to play it.
Protoss seems weak. On top of that, it's the 20% basically that are in so everyone is really good. Got STEAMROLLED by a couple of Terrans/Zergs today.
I'm about Diamond level but haven't been playing for a while so it's tough. But so far I find the beta to be a lot of fun, even if it's not quite balanced yet.
I think the macro is a little TOO fast though. I don't think you should start with 12 workers or have to expand THAT quickly. Maybe something this and WoL.

I think its too early to tell. Good players aren't even playing LotV yet. Any definitive judgment has to be based on korean play.
My personal impression so far is that the new worker count has more cons than pros. Today MC stole two gases from Patience, leading to a unique early-mid game. That's dead now.
The new economy in general makes you feel like you are playing against the clock, but something had to be done to end the turtle madness.

The macro is super fast, I can see the direction that Blizzard is going to go and honestly cutting out the initial "boring" minutes with the 12 worker thing feels like the issue, bringing the minerals to 100/60 was a good move but it's just so many workers right from the get go it's like playing with a super charged economy out of the gates. Perhaps the 100/60 and bring the initial worker count down to 10? I definitely appreciate the boring part of the early game being eliminated but it just feels a bit too fast at the moment.
The minimap also is kind of strange it's really hard to see, turning on colorblind mode helped the slightest bit but it's really hard to see pylons and drops at the moment D:
On May 03 2015 02:50 GGzerG wrote: Welp, if LOTV Beta fails, i'm going back to BW.
I don't want to sound cynical but anyone that expects LotV to make it "just like BW" or something similar was ... not delusional but naive from the beginning.
Be it Blizzard's stubborness in some design philosophies(dumbing down AI in favor of game mechanics for example) or the fact that people don't actually want BW style of difficulty(people find SC2 too hard already - at least if we're talking about the "casuals" we want to get back into the game), there are a lot of reasons why it's not gonna happen.
Best we can hope for is for some, not all, HotS flaws to be fixed. But don't expect SC2 to be like BW - ever. You'll just end up disappointed.
@[PkF] Wire:
I get your point about defensive play to be problematic. But there are multiple approaches to designing aggressive/defensive mechanics. One is to give aggressive options first, analyse those, then give appropriate defensive responses. Remember, we're still super early in Beta. Nothing has really happened yet apart from a balance patch that fixed some "super obvious" flaws.
You have to remember that you guys are talking about dynamics. You simply cannot design those. All Blizzard can do is give mechanics, see how players work with that(what kind of dynamics emerge) and then respond to that. This takes time. Lots of.
It's refereshing to play something new, and the metagame is like a wild west of unexplored build orders and strategies.
That said, i feel like it's a little bit TOO fast and it punishes you for not expanding instead of REWARDING you for expanding. THe new units are nice and add a complexity to the game that was lacking from HotS.
Will definitely keep playing more and hopefully Blizzard will take some of the community's feedback on the economy.
Also, wtf is this new minimap bullshit? I don't even know why things are different colors... at least if it were consistent I'd appreciate it but right now it's just seemingly random.

Protoss in general just feels really week. Seems like you have to play better than your opponent to win.
PvT bio is extremely strong and if they're good at splitting you basically can't fight it. Colossus is pretty trash honestly. You need to do a TON of harass early game to keep up with them.
Cyclones are a bit problematic mid game... but I'm slowly learning how to deal with them. Blink Stalkers and Disruptors seems to do okay, because you can micro against the lock with Blink to keep them close and hit them with Disruptors which move at the same speed (if not slightly faster).
Vs Zerg I feel like the economy change is the biggest problem. They saturate their bases much much much faster than you and then can invest everything into denying your third. Giant flocks of Mutas arrive way faster, giving you less time to prepare.
Also, the 8 armor Ultralisk is broken. As. Fuck. Your units simply can't damage it.
Otherwise the game is pretty fast and intense. I'm enjoying it. Though I do wish it played a TAD slower. Protoss so difficult right now

I've probably played about the same, maybe a few games less then 50 at this point, and I am having a ridiculous amount of fun with the Beta (But I'm Zerg so that's probably not too shocking haha).
I'm not so sure anything is game breaking but I do have my issues with some units and their utter lack of interesting counter play, I know interesting is subject to personal bias so I'm just going to stick with the obvious glaring units that I just really don't enjoy playing against or even watching better people play with/against.
Disruptors are either rage inducing for the opponent or for their Protoss user, because in all of the games I play against them, I either micro wrong and lose a huge chunk of my army in a spectacular blink of an eye, or it kind of just whiffs and it dies to Hydralisks for almost nothing and I know it's a staggering and frustrating loss gas cost wise.
On top of that their synergy with the new Warp Prism is just way over the top. Not fun to play against at all not because it's too strong it's because it forces a super uninteresting yet somehow frantic response and I don't know, it feels lacking design wise, while it takes infinitely more micro and control then the Colossus this unit for sure needs work, the invulnerability thing just doesn't belong in an RTS and it's way too risk/reward to be strategic.
And for the other unit offender, Cyclones. This unit when it's played against a speedling style looks super weak and against gasless openers it murders Queens something fierce. I know this unit is hilariously imba vs. Protoss but at least vs. Zerg it's use appears binary, uninteresting, and while I know this sounds petty, the unit just looks ugly as sin.
I know I am just senselessly repeating what so many others have said but I'm not so sure about the Cyclone even being the right unit for the Terran arsenal, Factory needed a mobile AA unit and this unit isn't even an AA unit now until the Fusion Core if I'm not mistaken, so obviously it's intended role is drastically changed up from the last patch.
It's big, ugly looking and way too slow to micro in an interesting way. The lock on thing kind of makes micro not really "micro" it's more like auto micro for the Terran and some weird run out of vision micro for the opponent. If Blizzard was smart enough to give Zerg the Lurker, and if they really want Terran to have a reliable, meat shield AA factory unit then can we test the Goliath? At least they already have the models for it complete they can just throw some stats on it.
Well after having played a few games of LotV I can honestly say it's not a perfect game and horribly imbalanced.
But as a player that absolutely hates passive(not defensive, but passive) play it's way more fun to play than HotS ever was. I can play defensively if I want to and have constant struggles to defend my new bases, or be aggressive and try to deny my opponent's expansion. It feels much more dynamic, much more room to lose AND win.
LotV is much less of that "Here comes the big doom push after 10 minutes of nothing!!" but instead more about being active and I enjoy that.
I think that the economy could use way more tweaking than it currently has, though. So perhaps DH + LotV could be something fun to try out.

Yup in the bnet desktop app. Click the icon thing on the top left of the app and click settings from there, then find the lotv beta in the list and the option is there.

I don't care about ladder as long as they fix speed. It feels so slow, and I don't mean slower because of my hardware because it's superb.

Cool, so this helped. I hope they will fix it.
I love that FPS meter now shows the ping(!!) so now you know who is lagging In this case it is me, ping does not go under 100(which is fine for my level ) but it spikes around 1,000 every now and then and usually for a long period Sad me
I know I am just senselessly repeating what so many others have said but I'm not so sure about the Cyclone even being the right unit for the Terran arsenal, Factory needed a mobile AA unit and this unit isn't even an AA unit now until the Fusion Core if I'm not mistaken, so obviously it's intended role is drastically changed up from the last patch.
Why the hell do you want Goliaths, when you have Vikings (that have the same stats but are a bit more expensive) and Marauders? I've never understood that BW nostalgia drama from the Goliath. Vikings have exactly the same or better stats than Goliaths, except ground movement speed, and have the advantage of being able to fly and escape danger, something that they couldn't do in BW.
If you dig in a bit in SC2 developement, Vikings are reworked Goliaths. They were originally Goliaths, with almost the same stats. Then they added the flying mode. Then moved to Starport. But stats were kept.
Terran doesn't even need a very very strong dedicated AA unit from the factory. Cyclones are very strong and Thors, even if they are a big damn slow piece of junk, can trash mutas very hard if they catch them unmicroed. If you need dedicated or strong AA, you can tech to a higher tech line like Zergs and Protoss are forced to do. Protoss Robo doesn't even have anti-air, and the Factory already has 3 units that can deal damage to air (Mines, Cyclone, Thor) 2 of them with splash. Factory doesn't need to have the full kit. Game progression exists.
As a Terran, you are going to have a mass-control air unit from the Starport to solve the muta problem and Viking/Raven can be a pain (since WoL) in the ass to deal with most air armies.... And hell, you have the best basic AA unit in the game (Marine) than can be easily massed to support your mech army, and BTW, the best AA structure in the game too. It's hilarious to hear a Terran complaining about lacking of AA. The only complain i think its quite reasonable is the Muta pain in the ass.
The true thing is that Mech has not a very very (with 2 very's) good meatshield unit, since Hellbats have amazing damage but are damn slow and balanced around that, making them less versatile than a more mobile version of them with less splash aoE or damage per shot. But Hellbats are almost as tanky as a Zealot or a Roach, so it's not bad at all.
I managed to get invited, despite not being ranked since mid-2014. Perhaps they're sending them to players outside of the top 20% MMR? Or did they disable MMR decay?

They disabled it, but a month ago... possibly is to bring back old players.

I actually did not know that the Viking was just a reworked Goliath. Believe me I am a HUGE supporter of buffing Viking ground mode substantially perhaps to eliminate the need of the Cyclone, some people on various forums have posted lots of awesome ideas.
I am a Zerg player (should probably just change my pic) but I just want to see mech and sky Terran be awesome and viable, really wish there could be some Tank buffs down the line so they can hold ground better.

Protoss in general just feels really week. Seems like you have to play better than your opponent to win.

That's how it should be lol
But I want it to be like HOTS where I can win games while playing worse than my opponent RIP
I'm not really digging the new Terran and Protoss units... especially the disruptor. I feel like colossus are so bad right now, I pretty much have to get disruptors. They're basically like super mines that level of similarity reduces racial uniqueness IMO.
The idea of cyclone is just uninspiring.
Zerg units are pretty cool but the lurkers don't t quite _feel_ right. It could be a physics thing?

I think than MechTerran / Skyterran is more than viable.... The problem is that many units are quite uninspiring or very limited, needing some rework, and some units can't get their role properly working since they are balance around other aspects, like Hellbats and Banshees.
Hellbats may need tweaks, Viking in ground mode or the transition time itself needs tweaks, BC's need to be more interesting and usable..and of course Siege tanks in tank mode.
But mech already has a very good kit.
- Faster unit ingame with linear AoE that melts light units and morphs into - "meele" meatshield unit with AoE and big damage than can be healed by medivacs. - Money shot mines, that can achieve a brutal cost efficiency, considering how easy they 1-shot things. - Siege tanks that can now be picked and fly with the medivacs (overcoming the weakness of a siege unit) - Cyclones, which are broken, easy to use, and it's really cost efficient (mark unit, unit will be killed 90% of the time) - A walking mass that even if clunky, is good AA vs mutas and has the highest DPS ingame.
- Speedyvacs that can drop and press a key to get out of danger with you valuable units. - Long range AA with decent damage. - A good air to ground fighter with decent DPS that can cloak - Air support that blocks the shots of other units. - The damn biggest air tanky unit. - A new unit about to come designed to counter all the air units that were problematic to Mech (mutas, Phoenixes)
I think the aspect that fails in most mech armies is production speed and the utility of some units.
If banshees were a core unit of Mech (reactored or at least with low production time, like a marauder to bio) they would be even morea amazing to use and that would be a buff to mech. But banshees are balanced around the idea of a harass optimized unit, and more oriented towards lategame where they can be massed in groups of 5-7.
More mobile Hellbats that weren't balanced around the idea of 1-shot/2-shot things would be also interesting, and of course tracking turrets for Tanks.
My BF got a key on an alt account that has no Blizzard games purchased on it. This discovery has led me to believe that sometimes invites are truly randomly dispersed. I'm sure they do take the top 20% mmr into consideration, and add those people wave by wave, but it's really weird how they go about it. There's no reason why my BF's main account wouldn't get it first because he has every Blizzard game on it, a WoW subscriber, and plus we are in the pool of Blizzcon attendees that are suppose to have priority. Just cross your fingers and hope for the best, folks.

Vikings are less cost efficiency on the ground than the Goliath, and when combined with the buff to production speed toss and zerg received in the late game (relative to BW), your much more penalizied for overproducing AA than in BW.
The real issue, however, is that all of the Vikings interactions in the game are extremely boring. IMO it makes more sense to have the anti-armored air unit on the ground and the anti-air light unit on the air. A more mobile Viking with moving shot would feel wonders vs Mutas or perhaps Phoenix for instance while its boring as hell vs Broodlords/Vipers/Carriers. On top of that its also good at preventing stuff from happening such as Overlord drops or Warp Prism drop play. Prior to HOTS, it also made medivacs quite inefficient.

Don't know about game-breaking, but the issues that I have with the game are the following ones:
(note this isn't compared to HOTS, but rather LOTV compared to how I ideally see the game).
General - The damage point of most ranged units is 0.16 instead of 0 - Too many delays in the game. E.g when you burrow, lift, lower supply depots, transform.
Terran - Raven is unfun to use and play against. - Cyclones... Worst unit in the game. Its not even about balance, but the fact that it interacts awfully with a lot of units. - Mech lacks some type of mobile AA, without this it will be forced to turtle vs air openings. This might be temporary ofc as the new terran air unit can fix that. - I want a defensive late game mech style to be viable (as in BW where you are spread out all over the map and the opponent has the tools to trade vs you). - Ghosts are boring to play with and play against. - Reaper Bombs are balanced around being spammy with no proper reward, which makes them pretty boring. - BC's are still boring
Protoss - Sentry is unfun to use and play against. - Protoss lacks a strong core army - Colossus useless and boring - Immortal is now a boring amove unit with a press-a-button ability in order to "micro". - Oracle still needs a moving shot instead of slow acceleration, weird turn rate and super high DPS vs light. - Void Ray is boring. - Carrier "free units" are dumb. - Mothership Core is unfun to use and unfun to play against. - Zealots are too slow and charge should be replaced with a movement speed buff in order to make them better vs 0 damage point ranged units.
Zerg - Ravager got overnerfed into uselessness - Abduct lacks counterplay - Ultralisk is a boring unmicroable unit that is now a hardcounter unit. - New Corrupter ability has boring interactions (gimme unit vs unit interactions instead of structure vs units) and too little counterplay. - Swarm Hosts still spawns free units and therefore prevents any unit vs unit interactions from being created. - Nydus Network is awfully designed. - Overlord drops are underpowered. - Broodlords a big deathball a-move unit that only can be countered by a critical mass of unit.
Good stuff LOTV adds relative to HOTS - Disruptors (though Warp Prism pick up range might be too large as it removes counterplay in some situations). Also not sure about such an expensive unit only being usefull every 30th Sc2 second. - Siege Tank pickups are pretty fun - Lurkers are fun. - Ravager skillshots are also fun.
The could have been so much better but instead is meh'ish - Adept --> Should be balanced alot more around active shadow useage, so much potential there. - Mech transformations --> Should be a bigger part of the game and frequent useage should be reward during engagements. - 12 worker start. Would have been great if scouting tools became easier accessible as well. - Kinda like the economy. At least I believe that the game - with proper unit design/balance - could be reall good. But I would have prefered this economy along with faster build times on bases + infastructure.
TLDR Given how many complaints I have with this game, I don't think I am gonna buy it. Blizzard will surely adress some of the points, but given their track-record there is no reason to expect this game to get significicantly better.

Played a lot in the last 3days:
12 worker start: game accelerates too fast with too little information and too little tension between teching and pumpin economy. reduced minerals: hardly any difference to HotS economy. Not sure if this is the 100/60 and it was like this with 100/50, but so far most of my games end on 2-4 mining bases, exactly the same as in HotS. The panick that you need to expand a lot sounds vastly exaggerated.
The new stuff is great fun to figure out, but most of it doesn't feel principally fun to play with: lurkers lead to turtle play, besides being quite fun otherwise. Just need a few light nerfs imo. ravagers are very pidgeonholed and I hardly ever see them, nor do I make them Irradiate is just that, one click all your stuff dies hahahahaha Playing against cyclones... let's say it doesn't feel different wheter you visit the bathroom or whether you try to micro; your clicks do nothing Disruptors are between useless and completely broken. Mass Adept and mass Reaper feels like it is either stopped very early, or it just spirals out of control. I guess proper openings with those units are still to be figured out.
Ah, and non-Zerg players really need to step up their passion. It's ZvZvZvZvZvZvZ... I feel like I got LotV ZvZ completely figured out at this point, but I don't even know what to do past hatch first in the other two match ups.
My impression so far is that it is a ton of fun because it is new, but that would also be true if I tried to pick up WC3 today and had already good WC3 mechanics.

Having good WC3 mechanics would imply that WC3 wasn't something new for you so I don't really get your point.
I get that there's a lot of novelty involved with the fun of LotV, but objectively the games are different. If they stay different, then thats great. If they don't, then it's bad.
Also, my personal impression with every matchup: Lurkers.

One friend of mine who's still frequently playing SC2 (diamond) got an invite last week while another who hasn't played ladder for ages got one as well, unfortunately I've been too lazy/unmotivated to play for quite some time until they announced changes with the new season (didn't exactly benefit from the mmr decay system ) so I was stuck in gold and now am just slowly crawling back into diamond, currently platinum. Regarding random invites I really seem to be out of luck when it comes to those...
But I really hope they'll do something similar at the end of season 2, though, as having a goal like this is a really nice motivating factor to push myself again after such a long period of lurking around only playing few games every season

Those are just my thoughts on it, could be completely wrong but here it goes:
Ling/bling openings, because ravagers are crap against it and though burrow move is good it isn't that good to break the meta (I guess?). Especially since with the new timings gasless looks pretty much impossible to pull of, so you need speed and when you go speed I think ling/bling is just way more solid (or rather much less costly) than ling/roach early. From there I'm going mutas, because from mutas you can go right into lurkers and you can skip all the roach and fast upgrade investments. Like 8 lurkers + any form of ling/bling/hydra/muta should deal with anything pretty easily, meanwhile your opponent still has to go spore+infestor+hydra+roach when you open mutalisks and could go mass muta/ling/bling but any ground midgame composition is completely garbage because your lurkers kill 1290741258972189752978 supply of ground units in 2shots. I'm not really sure what to do from there, but if it played out like this I'm usually just ahead and go Broodlords+lurkers with lings and mutas for counter attacks. I guess Vipers could be good too.
The exact opening I'm using is double extractor trick, 16hatch, 15overlord, 15pool, 15gas, 20queen, 22queen, 24overlord (don't build an overlord to extend the 22supply limit, the superfast finishing hatch will do that).
The interesting follow up question is if I'm right with muta openings being best, can you transition into parasitic bombs or do you have to do the degenerate muta wars again.
Ok, thanks. Maybe I will experiment with mutas more again. Although I don't like going broodlords lategame and utlras didn't work for me against hydra/lurker. So far it often came to state where both sides split some part of map with lurkers and usually both sides went after mutas, but that's little risky.
I personally feel that the new Protoss and Zerg units are pretty cool. From what I've seen and played against, I really like the Adept. I love the idea of the Ravager. I hope they don't make it worthless.
I think it's really great as a top Diamond T that Colossi are weaker. I don't like the marauder nerf however, at least coupled with how strong Ultras are now.
The cyclone is really really lame. It sucks that it seems like it will definitely be in the final game. Also, the invincible nydus is literally the stupidest thing they've ever done with the game.
The more I play the more I like the eco changes. I'm not experienced or smart enough to really speak on the LOTV eco VS double harvester eco though.
My assessment so far. Overall, it seems fun, I just hope bio remains viable.
Just got my beta key last night even though I haven't played SC2 actively for over a year now. Pretty excited to get back into it with all the changes.
I got invited to the beta having played less than 5 games total in HotS (outside of the less than 10 arcade games i played). Oh well I still tried the beta and it's ok.
That minimap makes me feel like i'm back in gold league; 20 lings run into my natural and i have no idea where they came from because you cant see the small units on the minimap. I wonder why this isn't fixed yet players have complained about it since the start of beta, they surely can't think that this is still a good idea.

I think that a simple saturation tweak/recolour on the minimap can make it much more visual without altering detail, solving the issue you ask for.
Before in HotS you could also tweak minimap quality, I remember having played around with that in some advanced tab of the editor.
There have been some reports from individuals who felt they were missed from the Top 20% beta wave that went out last week. After looking into these specific reports, we determined that all accounts were flagged accurately during this wave. To help offer transparency on this topic, we wanted to provide details on the criteria we used. We collected every active account that was originated from EU or NA. Then we pulled out every account that had played their placement matches and had earned a rank in Season 1. Those accounts were then stack ranked by MMR and the top 20% were flagged for beta access. We realize there are still numerous active players who are eager to help us test the beta. We’re still flagging accounts on a weekly basis to support our testing needs. There will be multiple opportunities to find your way into the beta and we hope that this process didn’t cause unnecessary confusion for our playerbase.
Didn't get an invite? Ensure that: 1. You were ranked in 2015 Season 1, meaning part of a league on the snapshot day: the last day before the season roll. If you hit Leave League, well, that was a dumb and bad idea! 2. You were not underperforming in your league. Demotions don't exist anymore, so if you were a Diamond player but playing Golds because your MMR was really in Gold, that's no longer in the top 20%. 3. You were playing in the NA, EU, or SEA regions. KR isn't approved for beta access yet due to Korean rating board delays (like PEGI or ESRB). 4. You did not experience MMR decay by not playing for the last 2-4 weeks of the season.

Do you really think muta openings are neccesary in lotv tho? So far i've been doing hatch -> gas -> pool Get speed with first 100, get bane nest with next 50, add a evo, get +1 melee then add a lair soon after that, and 'rush' towards lurker tech while taking a third, you should be able to hold the third with hydras+queens vs mutas, and then soon after that you got lurkers to defend vs any roach/lingbane pushes, and you can drone up your third pretty safely behind that.
in HOTS you wanted the infestors for the big muta numbers, and they helped vs the roach maxouts after the initial few mutas, but i think vipers deal with them fine now, if you just get a fast hive before they reach critical numbers, and lurkers do great against any roach push if you stay defensive and use upgraded lings+lurkers on top of ramps.
It's a silly approach to use MMR when people complain about MMR Decay and such beforehand. And it's silly to undermine your own league system by using MMR instead of leagues/points.

Yeah they themself showed the flaw in their ranking system. If the 20% top ranked players aren't the 20% top players, the system is bad. Well at least MMR decay is gone now, I still hope they make a more transparent system for LotV, where your rank shows your skill.

Since I never got into any Blizzard RTS beta including WC3 Frozen Throne and HOTS it does not surprise me anymore
I never got into any beta before(only after I pre-ordered and got beta key), but then I got Hearthstone beta, and after that HOTS and now LotV. I guess it's because I spent a lot of money on the Hearthstone beta, then on the HoTS beta
Got a key, is the game worth playing right now? I was Protoss for my wol/hots career but I haven't played in a long time and all I've heard is P really sucks in the game right now
originally just wanted lotv to play campaign to be honest

It's a beta. Don't have too high of an expectation. My advice play random and have fun exploring the madhouse.

to be honest idk right now at least from my games its been only allins, bane allins, roach burrow silliness, weird protoss stuff but thats normal i guess and siege drops into mass cyclones lol. me personally I not sure i like it so far, but thats cause i like actual build orders and such instead of this randomness, but I've heard alot of ppl like the crazy chaotic game play but its to random for me right now. I think it will be much better when things get better figured out but not sure right now how i feel. also i play random, if that matters, and i tell my race.
been top plat for 15 seasons since the very first wol season. always played random to test out all races. top plat last season and this season i was finally promoted to diamond. no beta invite yet...
on the other hand my friend who hasn't played in over a year and did NOT purchase blizzcon tickets gets an invite. wtf.

WHERE IS MY BETA INVITE BLIZZARD?!
you are missing out on a good tester!
Don't feel bad guys! There really is nothing to miss.... this beta is really lack luster... enjoy HOTS till Blizzard fixes this Beta lol, it is more like a Pre alpha :-p

That's strange, i'm from germany as well and i have zero lagg. It's pretty much the same as eu server for me.
It depends on the time of the day and on your isp as well. When there is a lot of traffic between EU and NA the lag gets usually worse, for example at EU primetime.
Since the beta came out there was not a single day when I would miss to check whether I got it in my account after work. And there was not a single day where I would not be massively disappointed. Not today tho, I finally got it! Im so excited even tho I am protoss. I cant wait to see how it plays!
Just for info recently I started playing HOTS again and got 60% win ratio, currently placed in diamond. Not sure if this was the trigger.
Sorry to hear about all you plat/gold/masters not getting invites. I'm a bronze/silver and got mine last week. I had a season away from playing regular and have just come back to do my placement matches. When I did all five I noticed the region menu had the Beta option although it was about 4 days later I got the email saying I was in. Can't imagine I got this on being top 20% but could have been random selection? Although I did have a virtual ticket for Blizzcon, is there any word on if these virtual ticket holders get priority?
Only problem now is that I'm facing loads of diamond/plat opponents...
I'm wondering, is this at the end of every season or was just this once last season? Anyone has any knowledge on that because i can't find anything about it
