Being a dick never helps your team win games. Especially if someone is already tilted.

i realize this could be interpreted as passive aggressive

Sometimes I wonder if people in the US are actually raised in a hermit. I mean, you are totally right, being a dick is always being a dick, no matter how you look at it, but getting frustrated in any team game is a pretty common thing. Should you say "nice" when you are doing baron with your jungler, and a random skillshot from the enemy steals it? No, you are being rude, and your jungler probably feels like shit anyway. Is it understandable, given the circumstances, that you get frustrated so much that you just have to vent it in a form of a passive-agressive "nice"? Definitely.
Hammering someone for minutes with insults, passive-agressive or not, is idiotic, but can't blame anyone who slips once in a while during a game. And I'd rather read and write some p-a stuff, which communicates my discomfort on a rather mild scale, than seeing whose mother is a whore this time.
I'm not worried for myself, people have a thick skin here on eune, so I don't expect people to fish for the slightest hint of passive-agressiveness so they can report me or someone else. As for those, who would really deserve a report, ie. the ones who just can't stop, not sure why the verbal abuse is not a good collective report option. Both spamming "gj" and "fuck you" for 10 minutes to teammates are basically verbal abuse.

I've genuinely been afraid some games to try to help someone who is failing through a simple mistake. i've been told i was getting reported in games for simple things like "don't all in, go roam and help middle out" to supports or "try sitting under tower when the wave is pushing at you instead of fighting fiora, she's 2 levels ahead of you" a lot of things just set NA players off on the must report frenzy. It's the new form of "being toxic". you're better served just letting your teammates fail and flounder and potentially cost you an L than to try to say anything to them to try to correct or minimize the damage, at least if you value you account. I give myself 1 game a day i try to help teammates, otherwise i just mute everyone from the start. Because it's not worth losing my account to help someone else improve.
NA is a weird place, where people are more worried about their teammates being toxic, than winning a game sometimes.

pretty sure the passive aggressive report option is listed under negative attitude or whatever instead of verbal abuse. verbal abuse is for the more obvious things that a filter can pick up like wishing cancer or calling someone a term you shouldn't.
I don't think it's meant to be used just because someone shoots a 'nice' on a baron steal or something. I use it mostly for the annoying fucks who just won't stop beating a dead horse. like fine you can get vent on a bad play or whatever but when you refuse to drop it despite no one responding to it and shitting up the chat + potentially tilting a sensitive teammate that's when I think it's worth a report. not because their attitude affects how I perform, but because those type of players are 99% tilters who feed their asses off when one thing goes wrong for them.
obviously the ones who get salty from deadweight teammates and make some PA remarks I don't report because its understandable but that's such an outlier that I've only seen like maybe one out of like 100 cases anyways. the rest are all tilting feedlords that try to tilt their teammates.

People who get banned / punished will always make excuses for their behavior and blame it on overly sensitive teammates. This is nothing new. So this discussion is useless without actual examples of what was said, because those that were punished will always have the most innocent possible interpretation of what they said and get lots of support from the anti-Lyte crowd, most of whom were punished at some point themselves.
Given that I've been a (by my standards) pretty colossal asshole in chat, and yet have never been punished, I can only conclude that anyone who actually has been punished really deserved it.

The fault with the system is on the backend actually, once you are in the system it doesn't really matter if you try to reform yourself. It's like having a record irl, youll never get a job/be able to play league normally again.
But yea getting in the system in the first place is kinda hard. But for those people that were toxic and then change, its a bad system.

You're saying this in a joking manner but honestly I feel like they could actually create two separate game modes. 1) One "toxic free" mofe for delicate people, where Lyte's logic could be applied to its fullest extent (nothing offensive at all allowed) ; 2) One "toxic city" mode where reports for verbal abuse are not allowed. I'm pretty sure a good portion of League's population would use this second mode and it would be a real breath of fresh air. Especially here on EUW, from what I understand NA has never been that toxic to begin with.

But for those people that were toxic and then change, its a bad system. I think this is probably more likely because people don't really reform, and so obviously the vast majority of people who are chat restricted for long periods of time will continue to do stuff that gets themselves chat restricted. But it's true that the Lyte system doesn't have much in the way of encouraging people to reform, probably since they don't want to appear like they are rewarding toxic players.
It's a lot like the criminal justice question - are prisons bad at rehabilitation, or are most criminals just recidivist? Probably a bit of column A and a bit of column B.

There was a bug with it, they said they fixed it and you will be placed after you play another game.
