I still remember playing with a riven once who got fb and ended the laneing phase like 10-0. She swore Riven was the best pick vs Ryze, because you can get so far ahead you should be able to end the game before he comes online. I guess that's the best you can hope for with any pick vs top Ryze.
Yeah, I still don't see how Riven is good against Ryze.

if Riven go YOLO once he goes lane, he can shit on ryze every single time. Riven needs to go like 5-0 in lane or else ryze can shit back in late game lol

Just a 1 kill lane can always snowball Riven into god status pretty much everytime

I assume Riven just has to all-in early. Aggressive start and all-in at 2 and Riven should be able to burn Flash, at least. A level 6 all-in should be strong too if Riven can bully early, but I don't think she can particularly well against Ryze without an all--in.
I own Ryze with Rengar, even with the new one that I still cannot get used to it :-))))) the free gap closer through the bush is too much for Ryze early game where he is not that strong in straight trades
I imagine Riven v Ryze something akin to Season 2's Vlad v Kennen. It's more or less a skill matchup.
That said, if you're looking for good options against Ryze in lane, a gap closer is almost a must. Dusty suggested Top Xin Zhao in the last GD. Go all in at level 2 with EQ. You don't want to get kited for multiple levels until 6. Also, because of the nature of Ryze's kit, you always need to be wary in solo q. Just because you 0-3 Ryze in lane doesn't really stop him from carrying 50 minutes into the game with 4-6 items. You need to keep him from going all machine gun mode on your team, which is why Riven and Xin are acceptable. While Aatrox does have a gap closer/knock up, I don't see him faring well against Ryze later on. If you ever miss Dark Flight, you and your team are essentially gg'd. Not to mention if you can't OHKO Ryze outside of the knock up, it becomes a battle of attrition and sustain and frankly, I think Ryze would win that battle late game.
Technically 40% CDR Brand has a 2s stun on a 3.6s cooldown once you hit the spell to set them ablaze and be able to chain-Q. It still doesn't make him broken or anything. (The fact that he has a small wind-up animation contrary to Elise must help juking too.)
Irelia should be able to beat Ryze after a point from what I heard (I guess that contrary to Jax she has a more consistent dps for short trades early on so she doesn't need to take as much damage, her stun has a much shorter cd, her ult gives her sustain during the all-ins, etc.). Shouldn't bullies like Darius and Lee Sin be able to do fairly well too?
I would personally pick Karma, Lulu or Kennen against Ryze. All-in champs and AD carries would work too, but I'm not confident in using them myself. I think Ryze can harras Lee a bit to easily, against Darius staying out of apprehand's range is a challenge, but if you are able to do it then there's nothing Darius can do (all your spells outrange him).
laning doesnt mean much nowadays, u can crush him and stilll lose because its so easy to come back with current passive gold and xp bonuses when half of the games drag out and he outscales pretty much anyone, i camped for riven once we crushed ryze he was like 1-7 at some point and still won because other lanes werent doing so hot he just kept farming got random kills with tp and late game pooped on everything, i would advise to pick something which scales retarded well like kayle or jax
Oh yes I forgot about Kayle, altough I did outscale her that one game I played against one so I'm not sure if it was player's fault or is Ryze just stupidly good. Well, like I said - my go to pick against him would be Karma, does well in lane and scales suprisingly good too.

I generally like picking Lulu against him, it's not a hard-counter by any means, but you should be able to survive the lane, outfarm him and assist ganks really well. So I'd say Lulu has a slight advantage.
Realistically, the problem with Ryze top is that the way you counter him is not in top lane, but in the jungle.
If you want to pick a traditional top laner, just pick anybody with a gap closer and CC. If your jungler doesn't camp top till you're 2-3 kills up on him, you can't be expected to shut him down.
That's the way I see it anyway.
It's worth noting that we're not seeing much Ryze at all stars, so something's gotta be good against him.
