I think I can remember this happening in SC2 with the plane ticket? Then if you mention you're a journalist when trying to get into china they blacklist you. Not really? I actually know someone that is a journalist/academic that went to China for research.

Never had any problems to get a visa to China/USA, got 10 years visa for USA for travelling purposes and to China as well but can't recall for how long. I know it's not the same as for esports but come on.

I remember somebody, I think it was penny arcade, tried to go to allstars last year to cover it and they were denied entry multiple times. He was applying as a journalist, which is the category for CNN correspondents etc, which requires extra clearance and time to process. If he had just swallowed his damn pride and stepped off his soapbox for a minute, he could've gone. Instead, he applies one-two weeks before the flight or so (lol) as a journalist (double lols), and the Visa office and Riot told him to reapply as a tourist (he's a writer covering an esports event, they don't give a fk). He wanted his ridiculous moral high ground and refused. Getting a Visa for China usually averages out at about a week, and all you need to do is submit paperwork. It's pretty damn easy, as someone who has done it multiple times and recently just did it for my mother last week. He was just being an idiot and tried to sensationalize it as some kind of journalistic martyrdom.
A US visa ranges from either annoying (if you're from Europe) to freakishly impossible (see China, India, and anywhere else considered "underdeveloped").
Which is why the athletic visas were/are such a big deal.

Honestly who would try to get a visa with less than a months notice? Anything less is idiotic unless you are a seasoned veteran or know a power player in said country.

Doesn't it mainly come down to just applying for VISA in good time? I've only heard the stories about teams in eSports, but i doubt their management have experience to handling these type of situations prior to events.

Maknoon streaming "for EU/Asian fans", goes Teemo mid on the first game. What a tease.
"I guess I should play other champs, I can't carry with Nami... " yep, not from mid.
He says "no more troll" and proceeds to get a SC2 game as soon as his soloQ game launches. That timing. 6-pool inc. ?

A week ahead of time is naively optimistic at best and stupid at worst.

so uh about the all stars thing. is it really 2 guys from 1 region for 10 total and they make 2 teams? i kind of skipped over that part when i first read it and thought it was just limited to 2 dudes from each team.
|
AFAIK, all-stars is basically just the best team from each region duking it out for $50k. Then each region sends 2 "all-stars" to a sort of side tournament for fun. Probably just stuff like 1v1 and 2v2s.

I've been trying out Diana jungle in normals and it's been a monster. Any suggestions/advice? I do feel as though my lanes are terribly weak pre-6, but my midgame is unreal with Spectral Wraith -> Zhonya's + Abyssal (though I don't know what item is best for her afterwards).

yea I think the lingering confusion is that it's called an all star game still, it's a spring season championship with show matches made from the attending teams.

Here's Reddit basically laughing at the guy for being naive. In the guy's head, he had some strange martyr narrative of the evil Chinese government hauling him off to political prison for daring to cover League of Legends from a western perspective, and he was making a statement or something. It was pretty lol.
The original article links seems to be dead though, but it was your standard super paranoid self righteous I'M TAKING A STAND piece lol.
It can be access via Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20130607062039/http://www.penny-arcade.com/report/article/why-the-chinese-government-wouldnt-let-me-cover-the-league-of-legends-all-s

it could be interesting though sports statistics aren't created by magical fairies or computer programs, there are guys watching every game and recording every pitch, every shot, every pass. what's preventing the e-sports data from existing is that there isn't anyone that cares enough to put in the work to create it. long before there were sabremetrics and player efficiency ratings there was just some guy in the stands filling out a box score. lol does present some unique challenges to gathering the data though, like if you wanted to track the percentage of CS or skillshots missed in the LCS it would be almost impossible without replays because at any one time up to 90% of the players aren't even on the screen. while in traditional sports the vast majority of meaningful action is centered around a single ball, there is no such focus in league to prevent important events from happening simultaneously causing at least one to be unobserved. I think that the fact that you can make a great living out of sports betting has something to do with that as well. If eSports betting would be viable then there would likely be better statistics available as well.

It's kind of a chicken-and-egg situation though.

I just wish League could implement a Damage done to champions real time graph, that would have been way cooler than the current team fight interface.
also replays.

Also I think KDA is a boring statistic that is more times than not misleading
