Zyra's not the most mobile and is totally vulnerable to getting picked off while running around warding, but with seeds you have a lot of additional options for ways to not-facecheck bushes. The Q-E toss up is that Q is generally going to be much more reliable harass early and the Q-plant is just worlds better. If you land an E (and in solo sometimes it's worth holding the skill point until lane to see if someone deeps) you can really punish someone, but it's a slow projectile and fairly easy to dodge.
@Nyx (with the caveat that I suck) I've toyed with a full def mastery/combat quint stuff. You get to be such a bully it's incredible. The downside is that if you can't force some kills or an early tower you are stuck being super-duper poor. I've also not been real happy with the opening item options as I'd really like a pink in lane to take either river-bush or side-bush control depending on matchups and it's much harder to fit in comfortably. I've mostly gone back to the Def/util split as a result.
E: wei2. Zed's a pretty stupid champion from a design perspective to balance. He's so all-in on the assassin side that he either gets to delete the target of his choice with the ult and is borderline OP, or does not and is garbage. Riot also managed to give him immunity, wall-hopping mobility, energy, and totally safe waveclear. It would be very impressive if they could get the numbers so perfect as to actually balance all that.

When they shifted Zeds damage from his E to his Q I think they messed up. Q lets him farm easily from range if he's behind and then just punishes you with any mistake making him skyrocket ahead. If they made his Q do a lot less and his E be the more important damage source he might be a little bit easier to deal with.

I'm pretty sure that if I abuse my good/ OP champs and get some duoQ with my friends I could make it, but its so much effort, and it feels like such a dice roll. I could either get carried and ride the elo train, or I end up with a bunch of scrubs who try to be Faker and throw stupidly hard.
EDIT: I really like the 1-1-1 quints with an HP, a GP5 and a movespeed. Flat armors, hybrid pen, scaling MR (flat MR versus ranged supports). I always had the mindset that masteries are more for the entire game while runes are for earlygame. Also, taking pickpocket versus people you know are worse than you is the funnest thing ever. Play Lulu and play lane like its a pinata.

IMO something like doubling W energy cost would already go a long way towards balancing him. Maybe increase Q and E energy cost by 10 as well and he's a lot more difficult to make function.

So why doesn't xerath get picked more often? I know he has low mobility, but he doesn't seem to be that bad in laning (it seems manageable at least) and later on you're basically fighting from a map away. The extra armor from his passive is kinda nice, and his stun is pretty reliable thanks to his ult. His damage is also retarded. I can understand him not being picked often, but not even once?

The issue is if you nerf his damage then he becomes useless. It's better to make his damage riskier instead of making it less. Look at Fizz, he's in a similar boat but he can't farm as easily so his silly damage/mobility isn't as bad as Zeds.

Doubling his W would mean it could cost 80 energy at level one. Tell me how that is reasonable. It would force you to level up his W ahead of his other abilities and would make you unable to ever use W for anything aside from escaping since you can't combo it with damage as his damage abilities cost 50-40. Add in your wish for them to be 10 more it would be impossible to ever use Q and E together let alone W and Q/E. Seriously what the fuck
Zed has huge energy issues early on. It's just he's able to play safe and get levels he needs to make that a lot less.

The issue (imo) with him being an energy user isn't the energy use of his combo (which is already a hindrance), but his farming.
I keep using the Talon comparison because they're fairly comparable, though not exactly. However, if Talon had energy and could just Rake waves every time it was up, he would have a much easier time in lane. As it stands, he can only range farm for so long before needing to go back or be in danger of getting fought without mana. Zed can always farm from a range and then back off or roam somewhere and have a full Energy bar when he gets there.
In fight, energy isn't a problem, it's the fact that it gives him so much stayability in lane.
